The “buzz” word bigger than podcasting to the general public is VoIP. Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol) is basically Internet telephony, making voice calls over the Internet. Why, you may ask? Main reason for most users? Probably the price. It is cheaper than traditional phone service. But that is not the only reason, as I will explain.
As I am sure you might have noticed VoIP is everywhere. Cable companies are selling VoIP, branded as OptimunVoice (CableVision) or Digital Phone (TimeWarner). Cox and Comcast will soon be rolling out their versions. Telcos are selling it to offer the new technology to its customers and stem the tide on shrinking wireline customers. VoiceWing (Verizon), CallVantage (AT&T), or Net2Phone (IDT). Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are selling it like SpeakEasy, Covad, and AOL. There are also some dedicated Internet phone companies like Vonage, SunRocket, Packet8, Lingo, and IConnectHere. Seems everyone is trying to get into what can become a very lucrative market. There are so many of them now it is far beyond this post to even mention them all.

Some people were not happy with my “Mickey Mouse” review from August 2nd. It amazed me how many positive reviews there actually were on Apple’s new creation. I could hardly find one reviewer that did not like it. It was no surprise to me that it is selling well. Most Apple stores can not keep them on the shelves. But that does not make it a great mouse or even a “Mighty Mouse”.
Well now Walt Mossberg seems to agree with me. I feel that I am in good company here as Mr. Mossberg is like me, not easily impressed and tries to remain unbiased. As much as I am a big fan of Apple and its products. I will not just going to like it because they introduced it. Sorry to say I liked my Microsoft mouse better which is attached to one of my desktop Macs.
Seems Walt Mossberg also liked the Microsoft mouse better and says it was easier to use. I suggest you read his review before you buy an Apple Mighty Mouse. You can read it here.
I am still happy to say that Apple is now moving in line with 90% plus of all computer users and finally admitting that users want a multi-button mouse. I also give a great deal of credit to Apple for trying to innovate. I just am not happy with the result this time out. Functionality is more important than design in this case. Microsoft wins this one in my opinion, sorry!
All Macintosh users should be aware of iChat AV which I regard highly. Mac users should also be aware that iChat AV can also web conference with AOL users on Windows machines. As good as iChat can be. There are other solutions. iChat is not the only show across the web to see and communicate.
Marratech offers a more robust solution for online meetings than iChat can offer. Plus, it is cross-platform with clients for Mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. Marratech, offers a complete collaboration and conferencing environment on the Internet that is fully encrypted. It creates a true virtual office. Multi-point conferences, that is meetings with two, three, ten or more simultaneous participants are possible. Participants use high voice quality audio, share information, pictures, documents, applications and can see each other via inexpensive webcams. The iSight camera works fine. Headsets are highly recommended.
