OS X Tips #12
Play DivX AVI and other media with QuickTime
Sometimes I feel like with some video standards, us Mac users are treated like second class citizens, But we can make it easier on ourselves with just a little knowledge. We can make QuickTime do more and/or use third party free applications to play videos that were not available to us out of the Apple box.

Try this:
Go to your System Preferences, click on QuickTime -> Advanced tab -> MIME Settings.
Turn on all the MIME types you want your QuickTime Plugin to handle. See below:

QT Mime Settings

Download these free:
VLC media player, MPlayer, Divx 5.2.1 codec, Real, and Windows Media Player. Now you will be equipped to play most videos with only a few exceptions on Mac OS X.

You find this handy. The WMV Player Shareware $10, allows you to play Windows Media directly in your QuickTime Player. This eliminates the need for an additional player and provides the great playback experience and control that you’ve come to rely on with QuickTime Player.

Of course QuickTime will need to upgraded to Pro version ($29.99) to play full screen. VLC media player can do this for free as well as play DVDs.
