OS X Tips #13
Getting iTunes, iDVD, DiscBurner to recognize a newly installed CD-R or DVD-R burner can be frustrating if you do not know about PatchBurn.

OK, you decided to upgrade your Mac OS X machine by adding a new CD-R or a new DVD-R. Let’s say you bought a new Pioneer DVR-109 DVD-R from a third-party vendor (not Apple). You pop it in, easily. You fire up your Mac and use Roxio Toast, no problem, so far. Now you try iTunes, iDVD, or MacOS X’s own DiscBurner. No go. You find that you newly purchased optical burner is not even recognized by OS X and cannot use it to “burn” anything. But why you ask? Isn’t this the same Pioneer drive that Apple OEMs in their machines? PatchBurn to the rescue…

PatchBurn is a tool to patch existing CD/DVD-drivers (under Mac-OS X 10.2.x) or to generate and install new device profiles (under Mac-OS 10.3.x and later). Basically, it allows many, otherwise unsupported optical drives to be used directly with OS X to recognize your new optical drive and allow you to use it with iTunes, iDVD, and DiscBurner. PatchBurn is donationware, easy to use, and a drive saver!

Patch BurnPatchBurn can be download here. Installing it is easy and only takes a few minutes. Works with many optical burners that are unsupported by OS X. I have used this successfully with customers machines for Sony, Pioneer, and other drives.
