:: Record Audio for iTunes or Your Own Podcast

I have a lot of “live concert” DVDs in my collection. What I have been doing for some time now is recording the audio from these DVDs on my Mac, importing them to iTunes, syncing with my iPod and having some great concerts to listen to on the road. CDs can be “ripped” into iTunes fast and easy. But DVDs cannot be ripped the same way in iTunes.

It is easy to record any audio playing on your Mac using either WireTap Pro $19 or Audio HiJack $16 ($32 for Pro version). This is great for recording your own podcasts also.

It is simple but extremely useful for recording all the sounds that can be played on your Mac. You might want to record audio from streaming media, Internet radio, DVDs, and microphones to listen to later on your Mac or iPod. This is a great way to record a podcast. Also see Simple Steps to Creating a Podcast on this blog.

:: Simple Steps to Creating a Podcast (UPDATED)

Podcasting LogoCreating a podcast that people can find and subscribe to can be accomplished by almost anyone that has the desire. This is one of the reasons podcasting has become so popular so fast. Hopefully this post can give you the basics for the entire process of creating and publishing a podcast using OS X. The process for Windows users is basically the same except for the software I mention in this post. I will provide some links for Windows users also. Podcasts can also be done using video, but I concentrate on audio podcasts in this post as these are the most popular.

The basic steps to creating a Podcast are:

    Record your show
    Edit and mix the audio
    Convert to MP3
    Add ID3 tags
    Enhance your podcast (optional)
    Publish your show
    Create an RSS feed
Submit your podcast to directories and iTunes
    Advertise and Promote

Let’s go into each of these steps in more detail. Make sure to see my “Simple Steps to Creating a Podcast” summary at the end of this post.

:: iTunes, the iTunes Music Store, the iPod and the Competition

iTunesAs easy as iTunes, the iTunes Music Store and the iPod are to use, it sometimes surprises me when people miss many of the great features they have to offer. Totally understanding iTunes and how protected content works with your iPod is important to get the most out both of them. Many people never realize that the iPod has some nice PDA type features making it even more useful.

You can via autosync (or manually sync) your computer and your iPod for Music, Audiobooks, Podcasts, Calendars, Contacts, and Photos (photos require a iPod with color LCD screen). Mac users have always had integration and syncing between iPod, iCal, and Address Book. Now since the introduction of iTunes version 5, even Windows users can now enjoy autosyncing of Calendars and Contacts using Outlook/Outlook Express.
