Well sometimes, SIT happens! OS X Tiger (clean install or new machine) is the first Mac OS in years to ship without Stuffit Expander. Your Mac may not know what to do with a .SIT file. This is easily fixed with a free download.

Stuffit Expander

Truth is, since you can archive files right in the OS X Finder and un-tar files sent to you Stuffit Expander just is not that important anymore. Unless of course you NEED it when you encounter a .SIT file. Just download the free version of Stuffit Expander and your Mac will know how to deal with these files.
