OS X Tip #63
Manage Print Jobs Using CUPS
Lurking under the hood of your Mac OS X machine since Jaguar 10.2 is CUPS, The Common UNIX Printing System. CUPS is a cross-platform printing system based upon the Internet Printing Protocol which provides state-of-the-art printing capabilities for Linux®, MacOS X®, and UNIX®. CUPS is the standard printing system included in MacOS X and is the de facto standard printing system for Linux. You can use CUPS to help manage your printers and print jobs.
Have a print job that you are having difficulty deleting? You can use CUPS to cancel the print job.
Here’s how:
Using any web browser http://127.0.0.1:631
You do not need to be connected to the Internet, as this is local on your Mac.

Click on the Manage Jobs link

Click on Cancel job
CUPS may just open up a whole new world to some OS X users. Managing printers using CUPS can be very useful. Click on “printers” and check out your printers.

Gimp-Print
Gimp-Print on Mac OS X would not be possible without CUPS, built-in to Mac OS X starting with version 10.2 (Jaguar).
Gimp-Print is a package of high quality printer drivers for Mac OS X and other UNIX-alike operating systems. Gimp-Print provides excellent drivers for many printers that are otherwise unsupported on Mac OS X. Gimp-Print can make a printer work with your Mac that otherwise could not. Maybe you have an older printer you would like to use that never had a driver for OS X. Gimp-Print may be able to help. Check out the Gimp-Print of OS X website.
