OS X Tip #69
You can change the appearence of the time and date in the menubar. Want to avoid clicking the time to drop-down the menu for the date?

Here’s how:
Go to Apple menu and open the System Preferences -> International pane

Choose the Formats tab.

Click “Customize” in the Times section.

The Time that can be customized several ways, short, medium, long, and full. What is used in the menubar by default is the medium format.
Choose medium from the drop-down menu.

Here you can simply drag and drop the Time elements from below to create your custom time format.
If you want the date to appear along side the time, you will need to copy the required fields from the Dates section. Close the Time window and open the Date window.

Choose any format that contains the type of display for date you want to display.
Select and copy the part you want. Close the Date window and go back to Time section.

Paste in the code where you want it to appear. You can add punctuation marks and spaces to fine tune the look you want. Click OK and your creation will appear in the menubar!

I was looking for a tip like this. After going from small to medium, the text appeared like I wanted it.
The only issue is that the modification appears in iCal, making the month view unusable. So beware iCal users
