iTunesSeems I was too fast with my last post or too slow! Apple has been pretty quiet about the new features it added to the Jan 10, iTunes 6.02 update release. There is yet even another new feature to add to the MiniStore and the additional “video kind” for TV Shows. The 6.02 iTunes release also adds the ability of AirTunes sending music to several Airport Express units simulataneously. In my last post on Jan 14, I recommended Airfoil 2 for adding this feature to iTunes.

You must make sure you update your Airport Express with the 6.3 firmware update (released on January 3rd).

Multiple Speakers

In the Speakers drop down list, you can now select the “Multiple Speakers.

Multiple Speakers

After selecting “Multiple Speakers”, you will see a dialog box were you can check where you want to send the audio including the computer itself.

Pick Speakers

What is great about this new feature in iTunes is it will send the audio to multiple Airport Express units in sync, including the computer itself! This is an improvement over the multiple speakers feature in AirFoil 2. iTunes seems to do a better job syncing the sound between speakers than Airfoil 2.

Neither the iTunes nor Airport Express updates referred to this new feature, but from Apple’s Airport Express webpage, they do mention this:

“Imagine being able to play your iTunes music on whichever speakers in your house you prefer —- or all at once.”

So it is no wonder I missed it at first. AirFoil 2 is still very useful with its ability to send ANY audio from your Mac to an Airport Express from applications like EyeTV, Real Player, QuickTime, Windows Media Player, Widgets, Griffin’s RadioShark, or Safari. Apple still only allows audio from iTunes.
