iTunes Tip #28
Getting the serial number of the last iPod connected to iTunes may be only important if your iPod was stolen or you just want to know which iPod was connected to iTunes last. (Please note this tip no longer works like this in iTunes 7 or later.)
Here’s how:
Go to iTunes -> Preferences -> iPod tab (with no iPod connected)

Click on where it says “No iPod Connected”

Usually iTunes will show you the serial number of the last iPod that was connected.
Note: This tip no longer works in iTunes 7 or later as Apple has moved the iPod settings out of iTunes preferences.
If you need to find your iPod serial number, there are several places where you’ll find your iPod serial number:
In iTunes 7 or later
- On the back of your iPod
- In the iPod About screen
- On your iPod packaging
- On your iPod invoice or receipt
In iTunes 7 or later:
Connect your iPod to your computer. When your iPod appears in iTunes, select it.
Click the Summary tab, and your iPod’s serial number will display on screen.
In iTunes 7 or later, when you view the iPod serial number, you can choose Edit > Copy to put the serial number on the Clipboard. You can then paste the serial number into an e-mail or web page (for registration for example).
If you have an iPod shuffle, click here to learn how to find your serial number.

my friend just use his ipod on my pc.registration, and even his serial number in the itunes.ok i just bought a 2gb ipod nano.i tried to put my musics in.but it doesnt show the ipod icon on the itunes.bc of his ipod serial number.is there anyway to put or change his serial out and put mines in so i can put my musics in?if so thanks.
Keith,
iPod serial numbers can not be changed. But managing an iPod in iTunes is easy. You can manage the iPod automatically or manually. If you are talking about music purchased from the iTunes Musis Store your computer must be authorized to play that back. Apple allows 5 machines to be authorized.
this may work with an older version of itunes i guess, but i have itunes 7.0.2.16, which im pretty sure is one of the latest versions out, after i click “preferences”, there are the the tabs marked “genera”, “podcasts”, “playback” etc. but no ipod tab. how else could i get the serial number of the ipod last connected to my computer ? my ipod was recently stolen and i dont have the reciept, box, or anything
Billy,
Sorry to say in iTunes 7 or later, this tip no longer works this way as Apple had moved the iPod settings out of the iTunes preferences. My only suggestion is to look on your iPod packaging or your iPod invoice or receipt for a serial number. Sorry you lost your unit, as I know that must “bite!”
I adjusted this tip to show it no longer works for iTunes 7 or greater.
