:: New 17inch MacBook Pro: What a Difference a Few Months Make

NAB 2006

Apple unveils new 17inch MacBook Pro (good-bye PowerBook) with features aimed out creative professionals at NAB 2006 in Las Vegas. The new 17″ Intel based MacBook Pro sports Firewire 800 port and dual-layer DVD burning, two features missing from the recently announced 15″ MacBook Pro. A hint from a high level Apple rep tells me that a revised 15″ MacBook Pro may get these features in the next revision.

:: Yet Another Nice Browser For OS X

I came across another nice web browser for MacOS X. Shiira (free) is a web browser based on Web Kit and written in Cocoa, same as Safari. Looks nice, and it comes with some themes. It is very fast, and has a bundle of nice features that even Safari does not have, including built-in search keywords, RSS reading, direct import of Firefox and Safari bookmarks, page holder, page transition effect (Tiger only), and Tab Exposé that shows all pages by the simple cool way.

:: Missing Your Old Mac? See This!

Mac OS 7 emulation on the web.

System 7.1

Well, it is just a Flash application, but it works great and feels a lot like the old System 7.

You can play games and play around with the control panels, use a word processor, or draw. Great Job! Check it out at MyOldMac.net. See the System 7 Flash emulator here.

:: “Switchers” Guide To Mac Software

iMac running Windows alsoYou have ignored the myths and untruths about Macintosh software that your Windows using friends have “recited” to you as if it was written in stone. There is no software for Macs, there is no software for Macs, they repeat. Well of course this is NOT true. Just take a quick look at my Top Picks section, check out my recent post “My Favorite OS X Only Software“, and of course look at Apple’s OS X download site.

So you bought a Mac, or are considering a Mac purchase. You may love your iPod, Apple’s service, or all those “cool” looking Macintosh computers. Maybe you want to use an OS X only software application from Apple or another third-party software company. Yes, believe it or not there are actually many software applications for Macs, not even made by Apple, that do not run on Windows! What? No one told you there was no software for Windows?

:: Don’t Get Your Mac Jacked!

Amusing video shows a demo of an early alpha version of iAlertU, which is a lot like a car alarm for your MacBook Pro. I have no idea if this is a real video but I liked the idea and found it funny.

Supposedly, the iAlertU application uses the motion sensor built into the MacBook along with the infrared remote to turn your computer into a remote activated alarm system. Right now the application is in a early stage of development but I will soon have a demo video available for download followed by an alpha version of the application.

:: First Virtualization Solution for Intel-powered Macs.

Win XP running on top of Intel Mac

Right on top of Apple’s Boot Camp announcement, comes Parallels Workstation 2.1 Beta for Mac OS X, virtualization software for Intel Macs. This solution allows you to run Windows on top of OS X, a lot like Virtual PC, without the need to boot into Windows. Unlike Virtual PC the Parallels solution is said to run at “near” native speed.

Parallels Workstation 2.1 Beta can run Windows versions (3.1, 3.11, 95, 98, Me, 2000, NT, XP, 2003), any Linux distribution, FreeBSD, Solaris, OS/2, eComStation, or MS-DOS and is free while it is in beta. The software is expected to cost $49.99 on the official release.

:: Apple Unveils Boot Camp To Run Windows XP Natively

Boot Camp

ReelSmart is really not a news site, but it is just too big an announcement not to post. Apple has released a beta of a new app called Boot Camp that allows users to run Windows XP natively on the new Intel Macs. The software is available as a beta right now and will ship with Mac OS X Leopard, the company’s next-generation operating system slated to make its first public appearance in August at the WWDC (World Wide Developers Conference).

Boot Camp partitions your hard drive to make room for Windows XP without you having to reformat your OS X partition. I helps you burn a CD so you can install all drivers necessary to run Windows XP, on your Intel Mac hardware. Once install is finished you will now have a dual-boot system. All you need to do is hold down the Option key (Alt key for Windows users) while restarting your Mac and choose the OS you want.
