I just finished reading Peachtree Press’ WordPress 2: Visual QuickStart Guide (Visual QuickStart Guides), $24.99 by Maria Langer and Miraz Jordan.
The book covers WordPress 2, hosted on your own server, and WordPress.com which is the free hosted solution. This is the must-have for new users as it takes you through all aspects of downloading, installing, and using WordPress. Advanced users will also get some valuable information from this book. WordPress 2 covers the basics of customizing themes, tweaks, plugins, blogging tools, podcasting, custom fields, and FTP.
I only wish this book was available to me when I first got involved using WordPress. After spending a great deal of time building and modifying several WordPress sites for the last few years, this book would have saved me a quite a bit of time researching answers for modifying WordPress. Between this book, the WordPress Codex and support forums users will have everything they need to use and modify WordPress.
Another book I highly recommend is Bulletproof Web Design: Improving flexibility and protecting against worst-case scenarios with XHTML and CSS, $21.95 by Dan Cederholm. I consider this the most useful web design book I own. The author, Dan Cederholm has done work for Odeo, ESPN, and Google among many others.

Thanks for the kind words about our book Stephen.
One of our goals with the book is to save people time – all the info is out there, but you have to know where to look, trawl through forums and documentation. We wanted to make it easy for people to find the info all gathered together.
Do keep an eye on the book’s website at http://wpvqs.com as we’re adding articles, tips, links and other useful things too.
Miraz,
I thoroughly enjoyed reading your book. I think this is a great resource for anyone working with WordPress. I wish it was written a few years ago when I first started building WordPress based blogs.
I will look forward to checking out the website. I will link to from this blog.
