:: Beware the Zune, Know the Facts

ZuneThere are many reasons to pass on Microsoft’s Zune this holiday season. Microsoft’s third try at beating the iPod needs many improvements to even come close. Third try? Yes the Zune is actually Microsoft’s third try to counter Apple’s success with the iPod. Microsoft created the “Portable Media Centers” in 2004 and then the “PlaysForSure” campaign in 2005. Both were backed heavily by Microsoft’s large bankroll, with Microsoft executives specifically naming Apple’s iPod as their intended target. Both were touted as long-term initiatives, and claimed to be iPod-beating because of their ties to the Windows operating system and Microsoft’s supposedly superior proprietary standards. Both times Microsoft was touted that consumers “needed choice” from Apple’s proprietary iPod/iTunes platform (I always thought this was funny coming from Microsoft). Both times the campaigns were flops, very big flops, eventually “burning” the people who bought the compatible devices. Microsoft touted “choice” in players and “choice” in online stores. Seems consumers made their choice, choosing the iPod and Apple’s iTunes overwhelmingly.

:: iTunes Store: 500,000 Movies Sold

Cars from PixarThe Walt Disney Company has announced they have already sold half a million full-length movies from Apple’s iTunes Store in little less than two months. Currently there are only around 75 Disney movies available on iTunes Store. So far and Disney films are exclusive to Apple. Disney has “hinted” at “streaming” content to rumored wireless iPods in the future.

There are also reported talks between Apple and Fox for bringing their full-length movies to iTunes soon. With Apple “racking-up” these good numbers I think we will soon see more content from several studios available on iTunes.

:: Apple’s New iPod Shuffle The Secret Weapon

iPod shuffleMy birthday came early, as my sweetheart bought me a new 1GB 2nd generation iPod shuffle, $79. Apple is offering free laser engraving when you buy the shuffle from the store. We bought this at our local Apple Store on Saturday morning. The new iPod shuffle is small, very small, so small and light that you can clip it on your shirt and will forget it is there. In fact, you can clip it to the side of a light-weight headset and use it that way. Now that is small.

My hands-on experience with the updated shuffle, proved it a worthy player for the price, provided that you’ll be happy with limited controls and capacity. In fact, I think this inexpensive iPod is Apple’s secret weapon against its competitors. While Microsoft this Xmas season, will be pushing the $250 Zune player that will be sold at a loss. Apple has the iPod shuffle which will be a very successful “stocking stuffer” being sold in the millions at a profit.

:: MSN Music Abandoning Its Users!

MSN MusicTwo years after opening its MSN Music store to compete with Apple’s iTunes, Microsoft plans to stop selling downloads from the site, according to CNET. MSN Music shutting down as of November 14, the latest casualty of Apple’s digital music success. Leaving its users abandoned with NO CHOICE to go forward.

“After November 14, the ‘Buy’ buttons that you’re used to seeing on MSN Music album and artist pages will change to links that connect you to Zune and to Real Rhapsody,” MSN Entertainment general manager Rob Bennett said in an e-mail to MSN Music customers. This is not great if you are a MSN Music customer as it leaves you little choice.

As correctly noted by CNET, MSN Music files won’t play on Rhapsody-enabled devices nor will they play on Zune, leaving users no way forward. HOW’S THAT FOR CHOICE? From the company that has made little in choice an “art-form.” What gets me is that MSN has the gall to tell it’s users that they will get “More choices in digital music.” My advice is move to an iPod and iTunes now while Microsoft continues to “eat” its partners at the user’s expense.
