OS X Tip #128
In your Mac’s first setup, you were prompted to enter your full name. OS X by default, uses this name as the name of your Mac.
Example:
Stephen Antonucci’s Computer in my case. This is the name that will identifies your Mac on a network. This can sometimes be a long name or worse yet a name that is not descriptive enough if you have multiple Macs connected to a network. An example would be if you have, like I do multiple Macs on your network and would prefer to have a better name like maybe G5 iMac, PowerBook, or Mac Pro. The name of your Mac can easily be changed to accommodate your needs.
Here’s how:
Go to the Apple Menu -> System Preferences, and click on the Sharing icon under the Internet & Network section.

Change the name of your Mac to whatever you want in the top text field and then just quit System Preferences. Done!
