OS X Tip #135
OS X is great for automating the way your Mac reacts and leaves you in control. When you put in a Music CD your Mac may automatically open iTunes for you to play or rip it. If you put in a DVD Movie your Mac may automatically start it in OS X’s DVD player. You can change these behaviors easily at any time. What if you want your Mac to start Roxio Toast as soon as you put in a “blank” CD or DVD? Or open DVD Movies in VLC media player instead of your Mac’s DVD player? Or start Roxio Toast instead of iDVD when putting in a “blank” DVD?
You can easily make it so your Mac asks you what to do when putting in various media or even run an AppleScript you downloaded or wrote to automate some task like taking pictures off a Picture CD, resizing them, and automatically uploading them to your .Mac website, all running instantly by just sliding in the disc!
Here’s how:
Go to the Apple menu -> System Preferences -> CDs & DVDs (under the Hardware section).

Simply use the dropdown menus to change what your Mac will do when inserting the various media like “blank” CDs and DVDs, audio CDs, DVD movies, Picture CDs, etc.

You can set your Mac to “do nothing,” open a certain application, ask you what to do, or run a script that you select.
If you are interested in finding some cool scripts check out Automator.us site or AutomatorWorld. Or it may be time to learn AppleScript and Automator and write your own.
