Coda

Panic, makers of my favorite FTP application Transmit has just released a new application for web developers who like to hand code. And who doesn’t? Coda combines a Text editor + Transmit + CSS editor + Terminal + Books + More all in one beautiful looking application.

Instead of buying and having to use separate applications for text editing, FTP, CSS editing, preview, terminal app, and finding resources.

The Coda UI is beautiful. When first launched, Coda offers to import your Transmit favorites. To work on a project, just double click it and it “flips” into view. One more click logs into the project’s remote files and displays them in the left hand sidebar. Select any file to begin working on it. Super easy and fast.

The “Books” feature allows one click to a virtual bookshelf that has volumes on HTML, CSS, Javascript and PHP. Click on any book to begin “reading” it, and quickly jump to any topic you are particularly interested in just by clicking a keyword. You can also order hardcopy versions of any of the books. Pretty neat, great job Panic.

Coda costs $79 and Panic offers a $10 discount for registered Transmit owners. These prices are for a limited time.

This looks great. Right now I use Text Mate or BBEdit as my text editor, Transmit for FTP, Safari for previews, Terminal, and CSSEdit. Not to mention my trips to Dreamweaver now and then. Might be nice to have one app that does it all. Coda requires a Mac running OS 10.4 or higher.

Let the developer tell you more, see Steven Frank’s weblog the co-founder of Panic, explaination of Coda.
