BusinessWeek is reporting that Apple maybe contemplating a bid in next year’s FCC auction (to be held Jan. 16) for the coveted 700MHz band, spectrum being freed by the move from analog to digital television. The auction has generated a groundswell of interest from big tech players like Google due to its nationwide availability and the fact that it provides sufficient bandwidth for high speed services. This is just speculation and rumor at this point, but it would not be so surprising that Apple would consider this with the cash reserves they are sitting on to get into the wireless business. Many big players will surely be bidding. Television broadcasters have already launched an advertising campaign to fight the technology industry’s proposal to transmit high-speed Internet service over unused airwaves.
