iPod Tip #36
First you may ask why? Well maybe you have a broken 5G or 5.G iPod video that has a bad hard drive. Or maybe you are really geeky and just want to do this. Anyway, this is a mod for the 5G and 5.5G iPod that is not for the person, not comfortable with opening and possible breaking their iPod so procced at your OWN RISK. If you destroy your iPod no not blame me.

Some Benefits of a Compact Flash iPod:

  • Smoother User Interface, no waiting for the hard drive
  • Reliability – no mechanical hard drive about to fail
  • Lighter by 27grams, 20% weight saving (based on 30gb version)
  • Drop proof if the LCD survives, so will the Compact Flash
  • Extended Battery life up-to 50% increase (real world usage)

Here’s how:
iFlashConverting a 5G or 5.5G iPod video to use Compact Flash Storage instead of the Apple supplied mechanical hard drive can be accomplished using:

  • Compact Flash card no less than 4 GB up to 32GB (64GB may work when they become available). Here is one you can use. A-Data 32Gb Speedy CF Card is a good choice $134.99 at Newegg.com.
  • iFlash Video iPod Compact flash adapter about $25 USD.
  • iPod opening tool about $4 USD.
  • Any 5G or 5.5G iPod Video.
  • Required Items

Here is a video (below) showing how this can be done.

The install should not take too long. It requires you open the iPod, probably the hardest part, removing the old HD, installing the compact flash card and iFlash – Compact Flash Adapter, putting the unit back together and restoring the iPod using iTunes. See the complete instructions.
