Sun Microsystems announced Sun xVM VirtualBox, a free and open source desktop virtualization system for Mac OS X Leopard, Windows, Linux and Solaris that will compete with VMware Fusion and Parallels Desktop. This is another choice for Mac users that need or desire to run Windows or Linux without having to reboot. Windows and Linux users can run most any x86 OS, except Mac OS X.

Man I hate reporting on rumors, but the “facts” are the Apple’s 24-hour flagship 5th Avenue retail store in Manhattan is shut down. Apple’s 5th Avenue store has only been entirely closed twice in its history: the iPhone launch and the Leopard launch.

While I am on the rumor rant, there are big signs that .Mac will be relaunched under a new name and expanded somewhere around the possible new iPhone launch after the WWDC keynote from Steve Jobs on June 9.

According to a post at the Mac Observer, Macy’s Parade & Entertainment Group, the arm that manages the retailer’s annual Thanksgiving Day Parade, has given up on Microsoft Access and is moving its databases to FileMaker Pro 9.
What often required days to extract important information in a usable form using Microsoft Access was reduced from about 10 days to just one or two days. More important, “we can better meet the needs and specifications of each individual, group and staff member,” says Robin Hall, Macy’s Parade & Entertainment Group senior vice president.
Griffin Technology has announced it is now shipping its iTrip AutoPilot with SmartScan FM transmitter, $99.99 for the iPod and iPhone. The iTrip AutoPilot features music playback controls, RDS technology to show song information on RDS-enabled car radio displays, the SmartScan feature that automatically finds the three best FM frequencies, and a high-contrast OLED screen.

Jeff Bezos in an interview with Uncle Walt at the D6 conference said Amazon will be unveiling a new video pay-per-view streaming service in the next couple of weeks and also spoke about the Kindle eBook reading device and the S3 service.

According to the Google Blog, the Address Book application in Mac OS X 10.5.3 now lets iPhone users sync their Address Book with Google Contacts. I have confirmed this. Easy setup.
Mac OS 10.5.3 is available via software update or the standalone download.
