Apple announced today updates to their iLife and iWork application suites. See the iLife ’09 tutorials and iWork ’09 tutorials.

All the included apps in both suites have been updated. iLife ’09 requires Mac OS 10.5 Leopard and iWork ’09 will run on Mac OS X v10.4.11 or Mac OS X 10.5.6 or later.

iLife ’09
iPhoto 09 (see demo video):

  • iPhoto has Face Detection that lets you organize your photos with all your favorite people.
  • iPhoto can organize your photos around where they were taken using Places. Places uses geotagging.
  • Upload directly to Facebook and Flickr from iPhoto
  • Sync the photo right up to Facebook already tagged with your friends’ faces because of the face tagging.
  • New Slideshow Themes in iPhoto with 3d effects. Save the slideshows directly to iTunes and then sync to iPhone or iPod touch.
  • New book printing options with higher quality allows you to add maps to books and print on the hardcover.

iMovie 09 (see demo video):

  • Animated travel maps so you can create 2D and 3D maps to show where you’ve traveled. Now iMovie has auto stabilization for shaky video.
  • Advanced users can bring up an expanded view of the timeline with audio, video, etc.
  • Video effects like cartoon, vignette, X-ray, aged film.
  • Themes like comic book, scrapbook, filmstrip, photo album.

GarageBand 09:

  • Learn to play guitar or keyboard with video instructor. 9 basic guitar and piano lessons bundled for free.
  • Artists lessons given by musicians like John Fogarty, Sarah Mclachlan, Norah Jones, Patrick Stump, Sting, Ryan Tedder, etc at $4.99 per lesson.

iLife 09 ships with all new Macs and upgrade is $79, or $99 for Family Pack upgrade coming late January.

iWeb 09:

  • Adds FTP and SFTP
  • New Themes
  • Drop in web widgets that update automatically.
  • Let Facebook friends know when you update your site.

iDVD 09:

  • New Themes
  • Automatically create a DVD project in minutes.

iWork ’09

Keynote 09:

  • New transitions and a Magic Move” that lets you show start and end points of objects and it’ll transition on its own.
  • New Themes and chart textures.
  • New $0.99 Keynote Remote that is an application for the iPhone or iPod touch available in the App Store [iTunes link].

Pages 09:

  • Now has full screen view. Allows you to move the mouse to the top of the screen to show the menus.
  • Dynamic Outlines.
  • Mail merge with Address Book & Numbers.
  • MathType & Endnote support.
  • 40 New Templates available.

Numbers 09:

  • Table categories.
  • Easy formula writing.
  • List of all functions available like Excel.

Pricing and Availability
iLife ’09 will ship in late January with upgrades at $79 single or $99 family pack (up to five Macs in your household). iLife ’09 will ship free with all new Macs.

iWork ’09 trial version (good for 30 days) is available for download with the ability to purchase a license key online for the $79 single or $99 family pack. Boxed version can be ordered online or will soon be showing up at the local Apple Store. iWork ’09 will be sold for $49 with the purchase of a new Mac.

Apple is also offering Mac Box Set at $169 that include Mac OS X v10.5.6 Leopard, iLife ’09, featuring the new iPhoto ’09, iMovie ’09, GarageBand ’09, iWeb ’09, and iDVD and iWork ’09, Apple’s productivity suite for home and office including Pages ’09, Numbers ’09, and Keynote ’09. This is a 40% savings. The Mac Box Set Family Pack $229 can be installed on up to five Mac computers in your household.
