OS X Tip #166
Make your Mac read that long text document to you using the built-in speech service. This works in Safari, TextEdit, Pages, and many other applications.

Here’s how:
Select the text you want read, then click the application menu and see Services.

Now go to Services -> Speech -> Start Speaking Text.

Your Mac will now read the selected text to you using the default voice.

If you want to stop it go to Services -> Speech -> Stop Speaking.

You can select a different voice in System Preferences. Just go to Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Speech -> Text to Speech and select a different voice from the drop-down “System Voice” menu.
