:: The Conficker Worm and Mac OS X

This worm, called Conficker, as well as Downadup and Kido, has infected unknown millions of Windows computers, and is expected to become active on April 1, 2009. For now, researchers are unsure of what the worm may do; it is just sitting on infected computers waiting for instructions. Researchers think it will connect to remote servers and download code and then become virulent.

This worm, which affects Windows computers, has no effect on Mac OS X; at least not yet. Intego’s Virus Monitoring Center is on full alert in case a Mac OS X variant of this worm should appear, but, so far, Mac users are in the clear. However, Mac users who run Windows on their Macs are at the same risk as those running Windows on PCs.

Is it hype or will it be Armageddon? See ComputerWorld FAQ: Conficker clock ticks toward April 1 deadline.

I guess tomorrow Windows users will laugh or cry!

:: Skype for iPhone Now Live

skypejpgSometime around midnight last night the new free Skype for iPhone app appeared for download as expected. I have installed it on my iPhone and have to say I love it. Nimbuzz, Fring, and IM+ for Skype move over the native Skype is on the iPhone now.

The iPhone Skype app is a nice adaption of the desktop app that allows you to do most everything except video conference. The user interface is intuitive, simple and easy to navigate offering a number of pleasant surprises, such as the ability to attach photos to your contacts by way of the iPhone’s built-in camera. You can toggle between all your contacts and just those online, and adding new contacts is pretty simple. Call quality is pretty decent for SkypeOut, SkypeIn and Skype-to-Skype calls. WiFi only of course.

Give it a try. [iTunes link]

:: SlingPlayer, Skype and Sirius XM Coming to App Store

25,000 30,000 apps. And counting!

With the App Store soon approaching 30,000 apps for the iPhone the criticism, usually from non- iPhone users, gets a little silly. They love to point to the small, mostly free or cheap “fart” apps. I have owned a Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm, and Nokia devices and usually find the apps on the iPhone to be superior.

itunesbuyhdmovies

Apple is now selling HD (high definition) movies in the iTunes Store as well as renting them. Pre-orders Quantum of Solace and Twilight are available as well as several others that can be purchased right now. The HD movies also come with an SD version for your iPhone and iPod.

Guess we can see another reason why Apple claims Blu-ray is a “bag of hurt” as described by Steve Jobs himself. A guess it would be a “a bag of hurt” to Apple’s bottom line!
