OnLive a startup company will delivers high-quality, streaming 3-D gaming to Macs and PCs or Internet-connected television. This may surely shakeup the gaming industry and especially the console makers.
The service is expected to launch in the winter, was unveiled Tuesday at the Game Developers Conference. The demonstration showed how it streams 3-D games from a data server to the consumer using proprietary compression techniques.
A Mac or Windows user first needs to download a small (1MB) browser plug-in, enabling users to play games with high-end visuals without the need for expensive graphics cards or strong processors. Games can be played with the keyboard and mouse, a standard USB controller, or OnLive’s proprietary wireless controller.
This may end game exclusives to one console in the future and allow game makers another outlet to get their creations into players hands.
