iPhone Tip #49
iPhone 3.0 firmware added Push Notifications to the iPhone. This allows you to get sounds and alerts including Home Screen Badges for any apps that have the capability. EVEN when the app is closed and NOT running! This is huge.
In order use this feature you must activate it.
Here’s how:
On your iPhone go to Settings.

Now turn on Notifications.
NOTE: Reader SN points out that MUST have at least one app that offers Push Notifications for your iPhone to show the Notifications setting.

You will see a list of any installed apps that have the Push Notification feature.

Selecting any of these apps and you can select which types of notifications you would like to receive.

I have the new iPhone 3GS and there is no ‘Notifications’ tab under ‘Wifi.’ Am I missing something?
@SN:
I have not seen that on any iPhone 3GS. It should be their on any iPhone running iPhone 3.0. My only guess is you have no apps that support Push installed. Try installing AP Mobile it is free.
@Stephen: Ahha! That worked! Guess you needed a push-enabled app.
@SN
Glad that worked for you. I noted this in the tip!
