In a salvo directed at Microsoft, Google has announced its working on a lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Google’s Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010 and will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips.

Google Chrome OS is a new project, separate from Android. Google Chrome is a new windowing system running on top of a Linux kernel. It will be open source and Google is asking for help from the open source community.
