Apple has announced officially that they have sold out WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) that is scheduled to start with Steve Jobs widely anticipated keynote on June 9th.

Developers still interested in the conference are being asked to wait for the immediate aftermath, at which Apple will upload the videos of events to iTunes. Some clips should become available with a free developer account; others, however, will require a paid membership.

WWDC runs June 9th to the 13th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and will for the first time have three separate development tracks: iPhone, Mac and IT.

Apple has confirmed that CEO Steve Jobs, along with a "team of Apple executives," will deliver the keynote at this year's WWDC conference. The event is scheduled for 10AM PT on Monday June 9th, at Moscone Center, San Francisco. Apple notes that it will focus on Mac OS X Leopard, and "OS X iPhone," as it is now branding the iPhone's firmware.

Much is in anticipation on the iPhone front with supplies of the iPhone seeing shortages and most analysts thinking a 3G iPhone with GPS is looming.

Also fueling the suspense was a rumored internal memo from AT&T to its retail employees canceling all vacations and off time starting on Thursday June 12 to July 12.

What we do know is Apple had promised the latest iPhone software and the launch of the App Store in June.

With only 2 millions Zunes sold to date since they went on sale in November 2006 it looks like Microsoft's plan has "no bragging rights." The plan? The plan that was to take on the iPod and Apple head to head instead of the PlaysForSure partnership.

In fact it appears that the Zune is mostly taking sales from Creative a former PlaysForSure partner, not Apple or second-place SanDisk.

Zune sales look like a total flatline. Apple sold more iPods in on month last quarter than Microsoft sold Zune since it was introduced in 2006.

Microsoft sold its first million using solely the pioneering 30GB model, but since the past November has been selling two inexpensive flash-based models as well as two hard drive players, indicating slow growth with little effect on the market for its broader product range. If this is not a failure, I do not know what you would call it.

Microsoft has been pretty quiet with actually sales numbers and I find it ironic that with these dismal sales figures they were still way slow in introducing more features like TV shows, podcasts, smart playlists or even audiobooks into the Zune line.

These sales results leave Microsoft with just a tiny fraction of Apple's US market share and with comparatively slow development. Microsoft is watching the iPod and now the iPhone fly past their player with wi-fi music store, mobile Safari, widgets, email, etc. with no answer in sight. Microsoft barely has 4 percent of the market for MP3 players.

Creative, has dropped from four to two percent marketshare year-over-year. SanDisk is in second place with only 11 percent. Stats are from the NPD Group.

Apple in its latest quarter sold 10.6 million iPods, or more than five times Microsoft's cumulative sales to date and is now the number one reseller of music in the U.S. with their iTunes Store. On January 22, 2008, Apple reported they had sold over 140M iPods to date.

So I ask "Where is the social?"

According to a Forbes article, Apple has agreed to buy P.A. Semi, a boutique microprocessor design company for $278 million in cash that may create a chips for future iPhone and iPod products.

The 150-person chip company, P.A. Semi, was founded in 2003 by Dan Dobberpuhl, who was a lead designer for the well-regarded Alpha and StrongARM microprocessors developed by Digital Equipment in the 1990s.

Supposedly the negotiations was done in Steve Jobs own home. The decision to center the iPhone design around a chip that Apple could own may mark a significant strategic choice by Apple, ensuring Apple can continue to differentiate its flagship phone as a raft of competitors.

I am often asked what utilities I recommend for Mac support. Yes, Macs break too. I have a list here of the software I think all Mac support people should have or at least be aware of. I own and have used most of these.

Disk Utilities and Data Recovery
Keeping you Mac running smoothly or fixing it when it is not sometimes can require the use of these software utilities. Recovering lost data is probably the most important thing for many users. Remember to back-up, as it is not "IF" your hard drive will fail, but "WHEN."

ProSoft Drive Genius 2, $74.99 [from Amazon] - one of the best disk utilities for the Mac platform. Disk defrag, directory repair and repartition on-the-fly are only a few of the award-winning features of Drive Genius 2. Optimize your drive with Drive Genius. Yes, this is the same product used by Apple at the Genius Bar in their Apple ProCare program to defrag your drive.

ProSoft Data Rescue II, $84.99 [from Amazon] - data recovery software for recovering files from a problem hard drive or that have been previously deleted. This will sometimes work where others will fail.

Micromat TechTool Pro, $77.99 [from Amazon] - Apple ships TechTool Deluxe with AppleCare Protection Plans. This is its full featured big brother. TechTool Pro is more than a disk utility as it checks your Mac's hardware for problems also. A complete solution.

Micromat DiskStudio, $43.99 [from Amazon] - allows you to create and remove disk partitions on the fly without reformatting your drive.

Micromat TechTool Protege, $229 [from Amazon] - tiny FireWire-based device that contains 2 gigabyte of memory and comes complete with the latest version of Mac OS X, the latest version of TechTool Pro and our latest drive utility DiskStudio that can bring back a dead Mac without a CD or DVD utility.

SubRosaSoft’s FileSalvage, $89.95 - powerful application for exploring and recovering deleted files from a drive or volume. FileSalvage is designed to restore files that have been accidentally deleted or become unreadable due to media faults. Device and file system, which means that the user can recover files from a normal Mac OS hard drive, USB key, PC disk, Linux disk, FAT32 disk, FLASH card, scratched CD, Digital Cameras, iPods, and almost any other media or file system that can be recognized in Mac OS X. The file types that FileSalvage can recover is huge. Note: FileSalvage covers the most file types and does basically all the same things that SubRosaSoft’s OfficeSalvage, PodSalvage, and CameraSalvage does.

SubRosaSoft’s OfficeSalvage, $49.95 - Undelete your office documents from your Apple Macintosh computer. VolumeWorks is designed to allow the end user the ability to rebuild a partition table, add partitions to a device, hide partitions, shift partitions, and resize partitions.

Alsoft Disk Warrior, $94.99 [from Amazon] - can build a new replacement directory using data recovered from the original directory from hard drives experiencing problems, thereby recovering files and folders that you thought were lost and that no other program could recover.

Backup Utilities
Sure I know there is Time Machine and Apple now has the nice Time Capsule product, but there is more to keeping your data safe with all our life's stuff on these hard drives. The support call I get the most is lost data that is not backed up! So backup is essential to support for ALL computers. Lucky for Mac users there are some great tools, even some free ones.

ProSoft Data Backup 3, $42.99 [from Amazon] - backup, restore and synchronize your valuable data with minimal effort. Backup to any mounted drive including FireWire, USB, ATA, or networked drives. Backup to CD/DVD disks automatically span on multiple disks.

SubRosaSoft’s CopyCatX, $59.95 - Create exact duplicates of your hard drive, Apple iPod, or Mac OS X startup drive. CopyCatX is the fastest way to duplicate devices in most formats on your Mac.

SuperDuper!, free with $27.95 to unlock scheduling, Smart Update (which saves a lot of time), Sandboxes, scripting and more! Great cloning and backup software for OS X.

Carbon Copy Cloner, donationware - clone, synchronize, backup and schedule. One of my all time favorites.

iPod Utilities
Many people carry music, videos, photos and in some cases their data on iPods. Here is a list of some iPod utilities in case disaster strikes. I have seen a computer hard drive failure with the ONLY back up of the users music and videos be on their iPod.

SubRosaSoft’s Podsalvage, $49.95 - Rescue lost songs from your Apple iPod using this data recovery software for Mac OS X. Micromat PodLock, $39.99 [from Amazon] - makes storing data on an iPod more secure. Includes an iPod defragment tool to make an iPod run faster.

Mac Forensics Software
Beyond the usual utilities software for repairing your Mac or retrieving data, law enforcement people will most likely be most interested in these. The are costly, but they have capabilities that may be worth paying for.

SubRosaSoft’s MacForensicsLab, $1,195.00 - complete suite of forensics and analysis tools in one cohesive software package. Combining the power of many individual functions into one application in order to provide a single solution for law enforcement professionals and digital forensic investigators.

The solution is based on a USB Flash drive that can be inserted into a suspect's Mac OS X computer that is running (or sleeping). Once the software is run it will extract data from the Apple Keychain and system settings in order to provide the examiner fast access to the suspect's critical information with as little interaction or trace as possible.

File and Hard Drive Encryption and Protection
For the more paranoid or careful user.

SubRosaSoft’s FileDefense, $59.95 - adds a layer of security at the layer that we feel is the most important - the file access layer. When you have FileDefense installed, every single file an application opens is questioned and brought to your attention, thereby limiting the damage it can do if it is malicious.

TrueCrypt, Windows and OS X, free and open source - Create encrypted volumes that protect your important files providing two levels of plausible deniability.

HamachiX, free - frontend to hamachi, a secure mediated VPN client.

Please note: Being your "own" mechanic can be hazardous to your Mac. I make NO guarantees - so, you are ENTIRELY at your OWN RISK! If you have little or no experience in upgrading or fixing computers or electronic gadgets, I recommend contacting a pro. These recommendations are informational only. We do NOT recommend taking apart your Mac or performing service on it in any way. Taking your Mac to an Apple Store or contacting a certified pro from the Apple Consultants Network may be the best decision you can make.

I recently wrote about why I think AppleCare is well worth the money. I pointed out that I think that Apple provides what I consider the best customer support in the industry for consumers. With well trained Apple Genius technicians, free training, low cost one-on-one training, and fast turn-arounds on most repairs, Apple has certainly "nailed" it as far as consumers are concerned.

However, if you are a pro user or especially in the broadcast industry your take could be quite different. I wonder, how a company that is so good with consumer support, could be so mediocre at pro support. You may be asking, what do you mean?

Support for professional Final Cut Studio, Aperture, Logic Studio, Shake, and Final Cut Server is nothing like what Apple's consumer customers experience. Much of the on-site support for these products are pushed to third-parties, resellers, and Apple Consultant Network members. Most will tell you that the support they receive from Apple is small.

For larger networks and video pros, taking their Mac to an Apple Store is no so practical. In fact in the case of Xsan or Final Cut Server it is impossible. As well trained as the Apple Genius may be at fixing a Mac and solving an OS X problem, they are not edit professionals. I do not see the executives that make the purchase decisions at CBS, ABC, NBC, or Fox coming to the local Apple Store to check out Xsan, Final Cut Server or even Final Cut Pro for instance.

Apple's recent "no show" at the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) show in Las Vegas last week will certainly have some fallout from professional users. Especially major broadcasters and TV stations. With over 105,000 attendees at NAB this year (even in a sliding economy), it certainly seems there are still plenty of people interested in the annual Las Vegas event. But both Apple and Avid were no shows this year, leaving a huge hole in the event, that other companies like Sony and Adobe were happy to try and fill.

Apple claimed that pulling out of NAB was because there are better ways to reach customers.

"Often there are better ways to reach our customers. The increasing popularity of our retail stores and Apple.com web site allows us to directly reach more than 100 million customers around the world in innovative new ways."

Well, as much as I understand that Apple may have wanted to save the huge expense and trouble of the spectacle of NAB, their stores and website are NOT at all a place were industry professionals can get a demo, kick the tires, or meet Apple pro app employees face to face. The Apple stores sell Final Cut Studio in a box and can sell you hardware, but getting a demo of Final Cut Server or getting intricate questions about pro apps answered is not going to happen there. Apple has always been secretive about their roadmap and upcoming products and pro users have depended on NAB for announcements and demos, as consumer users have watched in anticipation at MacWorld. Apple's press event before NAB opens the exhibits has always been packed by the thousands.

Being a no show at NAB this year has exacerbated a perception that video pros have had with Apple in the last year or so due to Apple's lack of Blu-ray support and the very late arrival of Final Cut Server. Quietly dropping their own Xserve RAID to outsource it to a third-party, Promise did not help.

Apple has talked up Blu-ray in the past few years and claimed to be an early supporter of the Sony high definition disc format. However, they have failed to bring the format to the video pros that depend on it. Both Sony and Adobe now support Blu-ray as well as many other companies. Apple has not brought Blu-ray to the Mac with drives or adding support to DVD Studio Pro. Right now pros have to look elsewhere. Blu-ray should have been available last year from Apple in my opinion.

Sure the Apple TV shows that Blu-ray has a challenge against downloads. Video pros that need to produce Blu-ray disks will have to buy solutions from competitors. With many video pros it is all about "workflow." So if Apple does not soon support Blu-ray they may find some fast competition from others, maybe even on Windows.

While attending NAB, I spoke to several resellers, Apple partners, and video pros that are now questioning Apple wanting to be in the pro apps business. One reseller I spoke to from New York said, "If you are not at NAB, you are not really in the broadcast business." I had to agree. Apple being so tight-lipped did not even inform their own partners their intention of ditching NAB until the public announcement.

Maybe this is the writing on the wall that Apple now lacks interest in the professional market. They have never had the support offered by Avid for broadcasters. With Avid handing out "pink slips" and canceling NAB, maybe Apple felt they could skip this year. Apple may pay the price of losing some customers. Maybe they want to play only in the consumer world. Time will tell.

I have never been a big fan of extended warranties. I almost NEVER buy them. I turned down the ones offered when I bought my two HD TVs and stereo, never bought one from Best Buy or any other retail store. Not only are these extended warranties expensive, in many cases they are almost worthless. Many large retail stores "push" theselike drug dealers as they actually make more money on the warranty than they do the merchandise.

I used to run a service department for a professional video company. I actually worked for three different dealers in my career. Most of these retail stores "farm" out the repairs when customers have the gall to actually want them to make good on a needed repair. They sometimes send out a long list of equipment to various third-party repair shops wanting these shops to "bid" on these repairs. I used to receive these all the time when I worked in a service center. These "bids" go out to these sometimes unqualified third party repair centers for the lowest price. The "low-bidder" that wins the right to fix the gear many times fills in their regular work with these repairs giving them low priority. Your unit may get fixed, but probably at a long wait time and sometimes not correctly.

Apple Stores however actually have factory trained techs, OK, Geniuses (I hate this name) that usually know what they are doing. Apple has a repair turn-around that is much better than most places. They turn repairs over fairly quickly with most repairs finished from just a few days to about a week to ten days. In some cases they will fix the problem while you wait. This is almost unheard of in the business these days. Try asking Best Buy to fix something or calling Dell.

We recently had an iBook that was almost three years old with only about a month left on AppleCare. It was experiencing an intermittent problem where it would not boot or freeze. We made a trip to the local Apple Store. On the first visit, the Apple Genius could not get the problem to appear, not for a lack of trying. So we took the unit home. A week later we were back and this time the iBook showed the problem. Diagnosis, bad Logic Board. Of course I already knew this, but the unit is under AppleCare. They took the iBook in for repair. The repair was finished in just two days. After picking up the iBook it was working better, but in the course of a few days we experienced a couple of kernel panics, so we made another appointment at the store.

After checking out the iBook this time, the Apple Genius said the part replaced is apparently defective. What they did next was far and above what was required, they offered to replace the iBook with a brand new MacBook! All we had to pay was $100, which was the difference in cost of the new MacBook as compared to what we payed THREE YEARS ago for the iBook. Now that is service I have not seen from any other company in a very long time, if ever. Replacement with a brand NEW MacBook that is probably three to five times faster running Leopard, not Tiger that the iBook was still running.

Of course we promptly bought AppleCare for the new MacBook. Even though, I am a trained Mac tech, I buy AppleCare on all my Macs. This has paid me back each and every time. I even buy it on all my iPods. Why, because Apple does their own repairs, promptly, and correctly taking care of the customer.

I only wish Microsoft would copy Apple on customer service. The Xbox 360 we bought for Christmas is STILL not fixed. Imagine buying an Xbox 360 in December and not getting even one minutes worth of use of it and it is past mid-April. What a joke.

Well in another instance Apple is proving it is listening to users. In March, some Windows users were upset that it appeared that Apple was using the Apple Software Update program that installs with iTunes to promote the installation of Safari. Apple has now changed the installer (version 2.1) that more clearly displays the difference between updates and new software.

New Apple Software Update in Windows

According to Computerworld, Apple spokesperson Anuj Nayer for Mac Hardware & Professional Applications said, "In this latest release we have made it easier for customers to identify between software updates and new applications."

The Mozilla Group noticed the change, but is still not happy apparently. Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's Director of Community Development wrote on his blog: "This is a good first step. Now Apple needs to stop checking the box for "New Software" items by default. With that change, I think I'd be pretty happy to let the Apple Software Update service back on my Windows machine."

Guess you can't please everyone! Anyhow, Apple has responded, unlike the Redmond based company that forced IE 7 on me without regard or notice using the Automatic Updater in Windows. Yes, I do understand that IE 7 is an update to IE 6, but it broke lots of my company internal websites with no easy way to revert back. But since it is Microsoft I guess we are used to them "controlling" users computing!

Anyway, seems Apple has responded to complaints in a matter of weeks, not months. Good job.

Apple may not a strategy to compete in the console gaming market, but the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP may soon have a huge competitor. With the iPhone/iPod touch SDK and the probable 3G iPhone coming in a few months, plenty of game developers are hard at work with much more serious games.

Game developers have access to iPhone/iPod touch's great screen and user interface, graphics hardware acceleration, 8 to 32GB of storage and especially the 3 axis accelerometers. iPods and iPhones will have Wii-like experiences with these built-in accelerometers. Add location awareness (location data that is built into the SDK) and we will see some pretty amazing stuff going forward. So much for those that have claimed in the past that Apple had no gaming strategy. The video appears to be a port of Quake 3 being played over a network on two iPod touches, very cool!

Seems people have spoken with their wallets to make Apple's iTunes the number 1 music retailer. Based on the latest data from the NPD Group’s Music Watch survey, the iTunes Store surpassed Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the US, Apple has announced. “We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone.”

Subscriptions never made a dent in the iTunes model. Seems to me Apple CEO was right when he said people want to "own" music. He also said they want to "rent" movies and of course it is too early to tell if he was right on that one also.

The connivence and user experience of the iTunes Store along with the huge popularity of the iPod has paid off. Wonder how Microsoft's Zune is doing these days. I still have never seen a Zune in the wild.

The iPhone SDK (software development kit) is taking up a lot of space on websites all over the blogosphere and rightfully so. This fantastically successful device is on the verge of being truly "insanely great" to take another more famous Steve's quote. In all the news on the iPhone SDK that will open up the iPhone to thousands of third-party apps, I have to wonder if Apple will even bring an SDK for the Apple TV? Where is the Apple TV's App Store?

Imagine the apps we could have running on an "open" Apple TV. DVR, SlingPlayer, TiVo, sms, chat, RSS, social networking, games, home automation, alarm clocks, remote desktop, security, video conferencing... Bluetooth add-ons like keyboards and mice.

Maybe this would be the right approach to bringing what Jobs called a "hobby" into yet another "insanely great" and very successful product for Apple. There are no really open set top boxes on the market. With Apple TV running OS X the developers would flock to it. If Apple wanted to get into the living room further what better way? None of this gets in the way of Movie rentals and gives loads of people another reason to buy an "open" Apple TV with all these added capabilities. What are your thoughts? Take our poll on the left.

With all the rumors flowing in about the new 3G iPhones that may be coming with an an included webcam, OLED displays, thinner - faster and more battery life. Here is more fuel for the rumor mill. Apple has posted for a position of a Handwriting Recognition Engineer position, citing the need for a dedicated employee for its Mac OS X handwriting recognition technology.

The Handwriting Recognition team is seeking an engineer who will be responsible for advancing Apple's handwriting recognition technology for Mac OS X. The ideal candidate will be an expert in the area of pattern recognition, with an excellent understanding of handwriting recognition issues. The person will also assume primary responsibility for maintaining and enhancing existing code and tools. The recognition technology you create may extend beyond Mac OS X to other applications and the iPhone.

Is Apple bringing back the Newton handheld platform with a new forthcoming iPhone? Inkwell has long been part of OS X requiring a tablet to be installed to use. This is what the Axiotron Modbook Tablet Mac is based on. Will be writing on an iPhone with our pointer fingers any time soon?

With all the hoopla over Apple defaulting Safari 3.1 to install on Windows users machines with Software Update you would think this is a "major" crime against Windows users. Although, I do not agree with these tactics, I assure you this is nothing new for Windows users or even Mac users using Microsoft products.

Examples would be Microsoft pushing Internet Explorer 7 on Windows users that have automatic updates on or when they do a Windows update. Well you might think that this is OK because IE 7 is an update to IE 6, but I will point out at the large company I work for this ended up with loads of issues when Microsoft pushed out IE 7 as it broke many important Intranet sites the company relies on with no easy way to revert back. Lots of users felt this pain.

The users did nothing wrong as the company had instructed them to keep automatic update on to try to stop the seemly never-ending security problems with Windows. Shouldn't the user have been given a choice? Or an easy way to revert back? At least Apple's software updated showed exactly what it was about to install with Safari 3.1 shown with its box checked and waited for the user to OK the update.

Microsoft has controlled the browser market for years with IE, that has pretty much ignored web standards. This has lead many web sites to work only with a Microsoft browser and makes much more work for web designers to make sites complainant with all browsers. The result of a huge market share can do this for you to keep out competitors.

Sure Apple wants to push Safari, as all companies want to push their products. Sure Apple wants to push Safari, as all companies want to push their products. Mozilla made deals with Google to push Firefox. In the case of Silverlight, Microsoft is pushing their Adobe Flash competitor down all users throats by doing want Microsoft does best, "bundling" Silverlight into other Microsoft products and putting them on as many machines as they can with or without users realizing it.

Microsoft avoids the use of the word "bundling" however. They say in their usual biz speak, that "they are actively trying to get other product groups within the company to adopt Silverlight in some way and then distribute it as part of their product," to paraphrase. They are trying to push Silverlight, no matter what to everyone.

Makes no difference if you think Silverlight is better than Flash or vice versa. Same argument can be made that Safari 3.1 may a great browser or not. It is really all about trust and making users aware of what they are installing and why.

In the case of Office 2008 for Mac, most users have no idea they are installing Silverlight by default. Office itself doesn't use Silverlight at all. Although the highest-end version of Office comes with a product called Expression Media, that does make use of Silverlight, the standard version of Office for Mac does not use Silverlight installing it anyway. If you have installed any version of Office 2008 for Mac, you have most probably installed Silverlight as well as MSN Messenger that Microsoft has pushed on us Mac users for years. Just check Applications -> Microsoft Office 2008 -> Additional Tools -> and see Microsoft® Silverlight™ folder!

Microsoft adds Silverlight as part of the latest version of the MSN Toolbar, using it to offer display dynamic content, such as RSS feeds. So when you install the toolbar, Silverlight you get. Microsoft is talking with leading PC makers to preinstall Silverlight on new machines. This along with much of the "crapware" installed on most of these PCs is one big way PC makers like Dell, HP, and others make money. Of course Microsoft is cutting deals to push their products and money is changing hands. OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) will preinstall just about anything if you pay them. Most Windows PC buyers are aware of this as their new machines come crammed with useless "crapware." Apple has even poked fun at this in Mac vs. PC ads.

Sony was even charging $150 to get your Windows machine free of unwanted software - $50 fee for not installing the "extras" (crapware), and $100 for an upgrade to Microsoft Vista Business Edition. Wired is now reported that said Sony has removed the $50 "Fresh Start" fee (after considerable outcry), making users only pay $100 to upgrade to Vista Business to get a PC free of crapware. Sony knows removing these unwanted apps from a Windows machine is no fun and users may actually "pay" not to have them installed in the first place. New Macs do not include this junk, no charge.

From Wired:
Fresh Start will now be a no-cost option on Sony's slick subnotebooks, but only for those who opt for Windows Vista Business Edition, a $100 upgrade. Most sites covering the $50 Fresh Start charge were incensed at the idea of being charged to leave malfunctioning and unwanted software off—and Sony has responded with a speed unusual for the international giant.

Microsoft has recently signed a deal with Nokia to distribute a version of Silverlight for mobile phones and I know they are paying several "start-ups" to push Silverlight.

Microsoft needs to get Silverlight on 80 percent of Web-connected computers to really get mainstream developers attention. With Flash having about 98 percent, Microsoft will use all the power of their installed base and monopoly position to push Silverlight. By bundling it into every product they can think of this strategy is a sound one. Microsoft has had it work before. With Silverlight they need to get developers on board and will be "pushing" hard to users on all platforms.

Microsoft in past deals with OEMs had installed Microsoft Works to push Word on the world for years and it worked as Office has killed off most of the major competition as users found themselves tied to the .doc format that Redmond owned. As I have said many times before having a lot of something does not really make a standard, especially since it is controlled by one company. For years Microsoft kept the Word format a secret making it difficult for competitors, just ask the WordPerfect crowd.

By the way I am not just picking on Microsoft, Adobe and others have also "pushed" their wares on users. When ever you install an Adobe suite it almost always installs a PDF plug-in that shows up in other apps like Microsoft Office. This is particularly a pain on a Mac as PDF is already built-in and the plug-in is not really needed. If you uninstall the Adobe PDF plug-in, the next time you launch Acrobat it will cryptically informs you it needs to install a component and re-installs the PDF plug-in!

I remember complaints from Windows zealots about how iTunes installed QuickTime on Windows machines a few years ago. Which by the way it actually needs to run. I thought that was funny.

So now the big story is Apple had added Safari 3.1 to software update with the user fully able to uncheck the box. I say, big deal, they learned the method from the leader. This is not anywhere as a egregious as the masters in Redmond has pushed stuff on Windows as well as Mac users for years. In the case of the Mac users, Microsoft has even left them high and dry after pushing their stuff on them, like Windows Media Player for one example. Still can not get the Zune to work on a Mac or anything else that is based on the latest Windows Media Player!

What Apple has done here is ONLY surprising because it was Apple. It certainly is not that big a deal. Most certainly, not worth the criticism and attention it is getting. Please un-check the box if you do not want Safari 3.1 installed. Only wish it was so easy with all the other stuff I am sometimes forced to install. Many times without me knowing it!

Coming with the iPhone 2.0 software update scheduled in June will be the App Store that will be the sole location for both paid and free apps for the iPhone and the iPod touch.

Users will be able to search, tap and download applications wirelessly to your iPhone via cellular or WiFi (and iPod touch). You'll also be able to install apps via iTunes. Apps can be updated wirelessly.

Developers will be able to sell their apps in the App Store, and can set their own price. They'll receive a monthly payment of 70 percent of sales, with 30 percent going to Apple for their credit card, hosting and marketing services. There are no additional costs for listing apps, after a $99 setup fee. Apps will include an electronic certificate, so if an application does something malicious, Apple can "track it ."

Of no surprise, no pornography, malicious applications, illegal material or apps with privacy issues will be allowed. Also, no surprise Apple to disallow SIM unlock software in iPhone App Store. Apple will allow VoIP over Wi-Fi, but not the cellular network if someone wants to create one (I bet there will be at least five fairly fast).

Note: the iPhone 2.0 will be available free to iPhone owners in June. iPod touch owners should be ready to pay something for it, maybe $20. Thank "accounting practices" for this.

Apple has laid out the roadmap today for iPhone 2.0. Along with Exchange mail and remote wipe for the enterprise they are releasing a beta of the SDK (Software Developers Kit) for third parties to create iPhone and iPod touch applications that will be sold through what they called the App Store.

The App Store will be the sole home for third-party applications making them accessible either wirelessly from the device itself or through iTunes, which will synchronize apps when connected. Apple will share revenues for any apps sold via the App Store with 70 percent going to the developer. The App Store will have only minor restrictions on what can be posted. Illegal material, pornography, malicious, or apps the have privacy issues will be blocked.

Apple plans to make the App Store available as part of the version 2.0 iPhone and iPod touch firmware updates and should activate the service beginning in June, when the final software developer kit (SDK) will be available.

Games
Games are coming to iPhone and iPod touch which feature built-in OpenGL/OpenAL support for graphics as well as sound, and game developers can access the handset's Accelerometer for motion-based controls. Travis Boatman, vice president of worldwide studios for EA Mobile took the stage at Apple's town hall meeting to talk about iPhone owners controlling 'Spore' by moving the iPhone in space. Touch Fighter, the first game demonstrated for iPhone. SEGA announced a demo version of Super Monkey Ball for iPhone, using the handset's Accelerometer to move the monkey around the screen. SEGA also said Super Monkey Ball for iPhone is the full console game, not a trimmed-down cellphone version common in the mobile arena.

SDK
Apple has unveiled a development kit that uses the same programming language and interface used by Apple itself and now includes Cocoa Touch, an API designed to add touchscreen input. Programmers now use a modified version of Xcode that is not only used to write programs for the iPhone but to manage them as well, including designing the visual interface, source control, and debugging. Testing will be dome side by side with an environment known as the iPhone Simulator that will run on a Mac OS X machine.

AOL has also created a version of AIM for the iPhone in five days despite its developer's lack of experience for the Mac. Users simply swipe to change active chats. Other examples of third-party development examples include a medicine guide for doctors through ePOCRATES and a SalesForce.com app for customer relationship management (CRM).

The iPhone SDK beta, including Xcode and iPhone firmware 2.0, is being sent out with "thousands" of developers and companies; the download for the SDK is free and will take roughly an hour to download, but developers can pay $100 to join the iPhone Developer Program. A finished version of both the SDK and the firmware is due in June.

Apple has announced the iPhone Roadmap and SDK rollout today at their campus in Cupertino. Apple will be implementing ActiveSync for Exchange mail support on its iPhone licensed from Microsoft. ActiveSync for Exchange mail support, or 'push' mail, comes alongside improved security with a expressed desire for built-in Cisco IPsec VPN capability with certificates and identities with WPA2/802.11x.

The forthcoming changes will see Exchange support built into the iPHone, directly in Mail and Calendar as well as contacts. Syncing is almost immediate, according to Apple, and the software allows users to toggle contacts as well as calendar and email on or off.

The latest release will also allow IT managers to perform a 'remote wipe,' effectively deleting all data in the event that the iPhone is lost or stolen.

Numerous enterprises have avoided widespread adoption of Apple's iPhone since its release in June of 2007, with many firms citing the device's lack of 'push' email support as the most significant barrier. RIM will now find they have a good competitor.

ComputerWorld's Seth Weintraub has compiled some notes from today's Apple shareholder meeting that are quite interesting.

On the iPhone:

It won't have Flash for the forseeable future (as I reported earlier)

There will be lots of applications this summer based on the SDK

The SDK will bring gaming to the iPhone/iPod touch

When asked if there be an iPhone blogging application? Jobs said "build one using the SDK"

They still plan to sell 10 million in 2008.

Apple plans to offer the iPhone in both China and India ... but declined to say when

Unlocked iPhones are a good thing - it shows demand

There was opportunity in business for the iPhone

Regarding the company:

At the meeting, investors passed a shareholder proposal urging the company to allow investors to have an advisory vote each year on executive compensation

Apple has no plans to buy back stock

Tim Cook, Apple COO - reiterated that they passed Dell to become number one in Higher Education laptop sales.

Investors voted down another shareholder proposal for Apple to deepen its commitment to limiting its environmental impact by creating a special board committee on sustainability.

Corporate responsibility - Apple delivered a code of conduct to all of its first tier vendors that it enforces vigorously. Apple has dropped relationships due to vendors not adhering to these. It plans to expand this to lower tier vendors

A successor to Steve Jobs?
After joking that he hoped there wouldn't be a party if he was hit by a bus, Jobs said the board has put a lot of thought into the issue. His job is to make sure that anyone on the company's executive team could potentially succeed him, he said. 'We've got really good leadership at the company," Jobs said. If Steve were to leave in the near term, COO Tim cook seems like the obvious successor.

Gaming:

Reiterated Windows games released by EA for the Mac using Transgaming's Cider

Apple gives game developers much needed support - World of Warcraft for instance

iPhone/iPod Touch games with SDK would be out soon

Has no plans to take on Microsoft, Sony or Nintendo in gaming

Apple Retail:

Apple now has 15,000 retail store employees with an 80% retention year over year. Jobs noted that employees don't just have retail jobs, but have career paths as Creatives and Geniuses.

AppleTV:

Apple has missed the 1000 rental movies by March 1st as promised by Jobs. This was blamed the licensing complexities at the studios. Apple said they will get there.

Apple will hold an "invitation only" Town Hall meeting at their Cupertino headquarters on Thursday, March 6, at 10 AM PST to discuss the State of the iPhone, and probably answer several questions about how iPhone application development will unfold with the expected SDK that was earlier promised.

Apple is expected to give details on "some exciting new enterprise features," for the iPhone. Corporate e-mail software, anyone? Stay-tuned. I think this will be a game changer in the smart phone market.

Little in specific details on what's changed was explained in this new release, except to say that the 1.1.4 release "includes bug fixes and supersedes all previous versions."

Apple was scheduled to release the iPhone and iPod touch software development kit (SDK) later this week, it is possible that this update could be a precursor to that release.

Last week Apple introduced a new version of Xsan, their storage area network file system product while simultaneously discontinuing the Xserve RAID. Apple is basically outsourcing the RAID to Promise Technology.

I noticed that the Xserve is missing from the Apple online stores. It still can be found here and seems to still be for sale. I makes be wonder, is a new Xserve coming? I doubt Apple would drop out of servers completely.

In a clever marketing move Apple has started a new weekly special movie rental for just 99 cents to help jump start the iTunes rental business. Apple will bring a new movie rental each week at the special price. Thursday will be "movie rental" day. Like all the movie rentals on iTunes you have 30 days to watch it and once you start viewing the rental you have 24 hours to watch it as many times as you like.

So far it seems that these movies are being offered in standard definition only found in iTunes and the Apple TV. Hope they bring an HD version of this to the Apple TV. Movie rentals can be viewed on your computer (Mac and Windows), all late model iPods, iPhones, and Apple TVs. The first rental movie at the special discounted price offered is The Hours [iTunes link]. Good flick by the way. We have the DVD.

Chris Pirillo a longtime tech guy and Windows expert has announced he has switched to a Mac for his primary computing platform posting 50 Reasons to Switch from Microsoft Windows to Apple’s Mac OS X. Chris is not your average Windows user, he is in fact an advanced user that became famous for spending two years hosting Call for Help Show and the founder and maintainer of Lockergnome.

If you are a Windows user and often wonder why Mac users seem to "love" their computers and are so vocal about it. I suggest that you read Chris Pirillo's post. He makes many valid points like getting 32-bit Windows to recognize anything beyond 2GB of installed RAM is a seemingly futile effort and the lack of viruses and spyware. As a power user, Chris said that Mac OS X has far more to offer in terms of tweak-ability and modularity. He learned that by trying it, not by guessing that it wasn’t possible.

Chris feels that Microsoft does not really care about average users and develops mostly for corporate environments completely abandoning its power users. I agree. He asks why doesn’t Windows Media Player have podcast support yet? I likes that he never needs to defrag a Mac’s hard disk.?Setting up services such as Windows File Sharing, FTP, and even Web sharing can be done on OS X with just a few clicks. Erasing deleted files placed in your trash (also known as a Recycle Bin in Windows) can be securely erased in OS X. No need to mess with third-party software. Unlike Windows font management, you can activate fonts as you need them within Leopard. This translates to less wasted overhead by fonts that remain largely unused in memory.

He points out many issues that Mac users take for granted and many of the Windows users I know make excuses for. Chris says "Windows users need Apple’s software more than Mac users need Microsoft’s. That’s just a cold, hard fact."

Microsoft doesn’t have an iLife. Not even close. It has a set of multimedia applications, but they don’t seem to be cohesive in the slightest. Wanna set up a VNC server on your Mac? No problem, its already apart of the operating system! Moreover, the feature isn’t buried three levels deep.

After years of being a dyed-in-the-wool Windows Mobile advocate, Chris said he wanted to hate the iPhone. Now as an iPhone user he thinks Apple will gain consumer market share at blinding speed.

On the the age old non-sense story of Macs having less useful software myth. See what Chris thinks about the software that runs on the Mac. 32GB RAM in a Mac Pro vs 2GB RAM in the average 32 bit Windows.

Chris says most consumers are caught up in the idea that you NEED Windows for everything at home. You don’t. Many of my friends are considering making the switch as well. A few... have already purchased MacBooks - or are strongly considering doing so in the not-too-distant future.

CamTwist and Colloquy... interestingly enough, are two FREE apps that work amazingly better than most overpriced Windows shareware titles.?Java app performance is decent on OS X, and the same code looks infinitely better when it’s not running on Windows. In fact, most third-party apps are very well designed so as to integrate seamlessly with the entire OS. That’s beyond refreshing.??

To bust the bubble on the other myth - Cost of the Mac as it compares to a comparable Windows machine according to Chris:
A Mac costs about the same as a comparable Windows PC - for hardware and (for argument’s sake for those who don’t believe me) bundled software. And for those who still claim that Macs are still more expensive, they obviously have never seen or priced a gaming rig. Price / cost is relative. If you want a cheap machine, that’s your prerogative. The resell value on Macs has always been higher than that of an equivalent “Windows” machine.??

Chris Pirillo is not the only prominent Windows guy that now agree that switching to a Mac is a good idea. John C. Dvorak, columnist at PC Magazine, MarketWatch and a podcaster on the Podshow network. “I advise everybody to buy a Macintosh because Apple products are the easiest to use,” he said. “If you own a PC, you have to find a local nerd, a kid, maybe a relative. Every family has one unless they’ve just moved here from a foreign country. That’s the only solution.”

I could give you probably another 50 reasons to switch that are in addition to Chris Pirillo's list that include the ability to easily "clone" your start up hard drive, RSS with Safari, the integration between apps, system wide color picker, the versatility of the sometimes maligned Dock, About This Mac System Profiler, software update, smart searches, automatic switching of networks, Spaces, Control + Scroll to zoom, iDisk, not dealing with a "C' drive anymore, sharing printers using Bonjour, AppleScript, Apple's website & tutorials, Apple Stores & free training, Apple Geniuses with excellent tech help, Dashboard widgets, UNIX core, security, Xgrid, Core Animation, Core Audio, Core Image, Core Video, Finder sidebar, Time Machine interface, HTML stationery templates in Mail, built-in AIM support, web clip, Stickies, Image Capture, Grab app, Dictionary, Network Utility, Podcast Capture, Terminal, Front Row, iPhoto sharing, Photo Booth, podcast support, Quick Look, Parental Controls, creating & deleting accounts, Fast User Switching, Migration Assistant, iChat Theatre, multi-point video chat, built-in PDF support, iMovie... Well I guess I just did!
