Apple has announced officially that they have sold out WWDC (Worldwide Developers Conference) that is scheduled to start with Steve Jobs widely anticipated keynote on June 9th.

Developers still interested in the conference are being asked to wait for the immediate aftermath, at which Apple will upload the videos of events to iTunes. Some clips should become available with a free developer account; others, however, will require a paid membership.

WWDC runs June 9th to the 13th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and will for the first time have three separate development tracks: iPhone, Mac and IT.

Apple will hold an "invitation only" Town Hall meeting at their Cupertino headquarters on Thursday, March 6, at 10 AM PST to discuss the State of the iPhone, and probably answer several questions about how iPhone application development will unfold with the expected SDK that was earlier promised.

Apple is expected to give details on "some exciting new enterprise features," for the iPhone. Corporate e-mail software, anyone? Stay-tuned. I think this will be a game changer in the smart phone market.

Apple has announced that it will not have a booth at NAB 2008 scheduled for April in Las Vegas. Following Avid's decision to drop out there were rumors about Apple’s following them out the door. Now an Apple spokesman said the company is cutting down on its trade show participation overall.

“Apple is participating in fewer trade shows this year,” said Anuj Nayar, senior manager of PR at Apple. “Often there are better ways to reach our customers. The increasing popularity of our retail stores and Apple.com Web site allows us to directly reach more than 100 million customers around the world in innovative new ways.”

Apple declined comment on the remaining extent of its participation at the show, or whether it plans to return. The story has it that NAB has raised the cost of participation to a ridiculous level and this is probably why Avid and Apple has decided to sit this one out. This will surely put a damper on the NAB event as both of these company's have been a huge presence with heavily trafficked booths. Apple has even held special pre-NAB events in the past on the Sunday before NAB exhibits open.

This is very disappointing to me as I will be attending the NAB event. There are rumors floating that Apple may hold a "special event" at the end of February. iPhone SDK? New Mac Pros? Final Cut Server?

Greed, that's right greed of the NFL, greed of the TV networks, and greed of our representatives in government is who I blame for the crazy stuff happening these days when it comes to TV viewing. There is not a show today that is aired on any major network that does not have so many commercials running during the show that it is almost impossible to enjoy them.

That's right, during the show. We may all becoming used to this ridiculous practice that allows the network to make more money at the expense of the viewer. They regularly put annoying ads at the bottom and sometimes at the top of the screen during the program. These ads have become more intrusive and larger every year. The entire goal of these ads is to distract the viewer away from the program you are watching. It is no longer good enough to just run the ever more increasing amounts of commercials at the break. Shows are shorter with much shorter seasons then years back. Cheaper to create and more time for even more ads.

Cable TV's promise in the early years of pushing "pay TV" on us was there would be no commercials. How long did that last? Then we had "premium channels" like HBO, Showtime, etc that now-a-days just seem to play the same 10 plus movies per month over and over again with ads inbetween. How many times can we watch Bird on a Wire and The Breakfast Club when we are paying an extra $15 - $16 per month? You get the idea, I am sure.

Many people found some relief with DVR's like TiVo where they can record the programs and skip the loads of ads. Well more pressure and greed has removed the skip functions and even most of the record functions when it comes to archiving HD content.

The Super Bowl brings out the most outrageous greed yet. The Super Bowl is broadcast nation-wide over OUR public airwaves. It is probably the most watched event of the year and the most profitable, as ads run during the Super Bowl cost millions per minute. Take a look at these two issues.

Comcast vs Fox, where Fox is blacking out the Super Bowl in HD because they want more money. Comcast customers will not be allowed to view the HD version of the Super Bowl, even though it is shown uncompressed in HD over the public airwaves!

The NFL is going after churches (and colleges and other organizations) for showing the Super Bowl on a large screen and having a Super Bowl party or get together. Again I remind you this is shown over the public airwaves. NFL lawyers are threatening to crack down on unauthorized use of the game. The league, which owns both the Super Bowl name and the broadcast, has restrictions that limit TV screens to 55 inches at public viewings, except at venues like bars and restaurants that regularly broadcast sporting events. Why sports bars you may wonder? Well most of them already pay the NFL and Network, vig or juice!

NFL lawyers in past years have mailed out hundreds of cease-and-desist letters and have hired undercover investigators dressed up as fans to prowl for unauthorized broadcasts.

How far will all this go? As far as public will allow is my guess. There have been bills in Congress proposing a "tax" on any TV sold in America over 55 inches. Seems the networks have lobbied Congress against citizens that build "home theatre systems" and might invite over friends and family! So far no legislator has had the guts to push these bills to the forefront. Allow enough greed and you never know if one of them might try to slip it past the public.

I have nothing against broadcast TV that is ad driven. This blog is supported by ads. I guess the question is how much is enough? What do you think?

Now that tech has moved out of the desert with CES ending it is heading west to San Francisco's Moscone Center where Apple will try and "woo" our dollars at the opening of MacWorld 2008.

The rumors are truly flying after seeing the first spotted banner just put up at the Moscone Center (thanks to ArsTechnica) reading "There's something in the air." Is it that a new slim MacBook is lighter than air, purchasing tracks from iTunes over EDGE, downloading HD movies for rental and streaming them wirelessly, SlingPlayer for iPhone being launched, or being able to order your latte from Starbucks wirelessly with your iPhone

Guessing is sometimes fun, my stab would be "paying for your latte wirelessly." I sure would like to use an iPhone to Sling however. Anyway we will all know in a few more days! See more pictures on AppleInsider.

This picture above from AppleInsider on an iPhone gives me the idea that "Back to Your Mac" may be coming to the iPhone?

Apple will be holding a special media event tomorrow Wednesday September 5th at 10am PST (or 1pm EST) at the Moscone West in San Francisco where they are expected to roll out a new iPod line before the holiday season. Rumors are as usual before these events flying into the stratosphere. Multi-touch video OS X powered iPods that also make Starbucks fraps? I hate to add to the rumors. I do expect that it will be a "bad day" for Microsoft, Sony, Creative, and many other iPod/iTunes competitors.

I will be covering the media outpour and post as-fast-as-I-can-type. So if it is a Beatle iPod, WiFi, touch-screens, bluetooth, a Nano iPhone, whatever, we will know tomorrow. I sure hope I like the new full-size iPod as I want one.

All models will be available starting today, said Jobs.

New iLife '08 Suite
Biggest jump in the iLife since we announced it first, according to Steve Jobs. iPhoto, has added something called Events. Our iPhoto libraries have grown, so to find these photos we have scroll through thousands of photos. We make albums to find photos, and look what happens, is we have tens of albums. Events helps make this easier. iPhoto now takes everything depending on a day, and put them together in an "event." You can split multiple event photos on a single day.

iPhoto gains new editing tools, including the ability to copy and paste adjustments you've made on one photo to other photos where it makes sense. Books and calendars have been improved, theme based home printing is now available and more. Books can now be printed with foil lettering.

iPhoto '08 lets users publish .Mac Web galleries, and features one-button photo sharing. Photos can be viewed in a grid, as a slideshow, in a mosaic and a carousel using Web 2.0 technologies. .Mac has over 1.7 million subscribers that can use these new features.

Apple's also bringing the iPhone with this new feature: The iPhone can now talk to .Mac, pick a gallery and e-mails photos to the Web gallery. Very rich Web 2.0 experience. people can download these photos - print quality. People can upload to your web gallery, and you can also see them on your iPhone. When you take a photo, you can send it directly to your iPhone and syncs with iPhoto.

Completely new iMovie - now supports the AVCHD format, for High Definition (HD) video. iMovie has been totally replaced with a new iMovie.

New iMovie's Share menu exports your movie to the iPod, iPhone, Apple TV and .Mac Web Gallery. You can also identify multiple resolutions for encoding. iMovie now has built in YouTube sharing!

iWeb '08 now features "live" Web widgets. iWeb now has Google's AdSense built-in. iWeb 08 has new themes and now supports "theme switching," so you can switch themes to your Web site after it's been published.

iDVD '08 has better performance, encoding and 10 new animated themes.

GarageBand has gotten some attention. Multi-take Recording, Visual EQ, and basic notation printing has been added with some other new features. One new feature, called "Magic Garage Band" allows you to create genred tracks, like reggae, latin, rock and jazz.

iLife '08. Sells for just $79 and is FREE with all new Macs.

.Mac
All subscribers are being upgraded to 10GB of online storage space - 10 times the prior amount for the basic subscription with data transfer limit raised to 100GB per month.

Most notably, .Mac now integrates with the just-announced iPhoto '08, offering synchronization between iPhoto and a web-based online gallery viewable "in any browser you like" and the iPhone via a new "Send to Web Gallery" feature on the phone. This will upload pics snapped with the iPhone straight to your online gallery!

iWork '08
Keynote and Pages, both updated with new features.

New Keynote, new text effects, new transitions, Instant Alpha. Instant Alpha, get a photo, lets us take out the background, just keep part of photo you want. Smart Builds, lets anyone make very high production value animations. Go to Media Viewer, drag photos in, anything you want. Keynote generates animations for you. A to B animations, you can create your own animations. Easily build slides that mere mortals can figure out to use. New themes have been added.

Pages now has 140 Apple designed templates included.

Numbers, "a spreadsheet for the rest of us" introduced! Import and export almost all Excel documents. No Excel Macro support in Numbers

iWork '08 is $79, available today.

iLife '08, .Mac, iWork '08, all work with Tiger, all will work with Leopard when we introduce it later this year.

Mac mini
Not dead, being refreshed today!

That is it. Apple Store still down right now.

Apple's scheduled press event will be at the Apple Town Hall in Cupertino, California tomorrow starting at 10 AM PST. New Mac-related hardware is expected, which may include a new iMac, a updated Mac Pro, and the possible dropping of the Mac mini (or replacement).

Update Apple's iLife and iWork suites, are also expected. iLife '06 suite of applications was updated more than 18 months ago at Macworld Expo in January 2006. I would not be surprised that new versions of iLife and iWork is just previewed and do not ship to Leopard pounces in October. There could be some .Mac enhancements announced as there are sorely needed. I do not expect to see any Apple's iPhone or iPod product line announcements. But maybe. We will all know tomorrow.

In other news, Apple has seeded Tiger 10.4.11 and Leopard Preview Build 9A499 to developers. I am sure an iPod update (maybe with 16GB of stoarge for the Nano) on the horizon before the Xmas season. Apple is already preparing to broaden its iPhone distribution to several prime retailers well ahead of the important holiday shopping season.

June is a big month for Apple this year. With all the hype of the iPhone's June 29 and the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) starting on Monday June 11 and running thru to June 15th in downtown San Francisco. Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO, will kick off the WWDC with a keynote address beginning at 10:00 AM PST on Monday, June 11, 2007 at San Francisco’s Moscone West.

Feature complete previews of the up-coming new version of OS X Leopard is expected. Leopard is expected to ship in October of this year. It is a good bet with the new MacBooks and MacBook Pros already released just before this event, Mr. Jobs probably has a lot of cool stuff to show the developers attending. iPhone SDK? New .Mac features and improvements? New features not shown in Leopard yet? New file system for OS X? Windows virtualization built-in to OS X? The rumors are flying. Tune in June 11th for my coverage.

Apple will hold a special event this Sunday, April 15, the eve of the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) trade show. The “Lights Camera” event will be held in The Venetian Hotel and Casino on Sunday, April 15, at 11 a.m. At previous events like this at NAB, Apple has unveiled new and/or updated products such as Final Cut Studio, Motion and Soundtrack Pro. Some speculate a new version of Final Cut Studio or new Pro apps may be unveiled, especially since Apple has already announced the 8-core Mac Pro. Apple will also be exhibiting in booth S105 LRM, SL5520.

According to the BBC, EMI will hold a media event on Monday featuring Apple boss Steve Jobs as special guest, prompting speculation that Beatles songs will finally go online. There is speculation that it is actually possible that EMI may announce some of their extensive music catalog may be available minus DRM.

With none of the Beatles tracks still not available to download on any online music service. It will be a nice coup for Apple if iTunes could do something with EMI and Apple Corps, the Beatles company to bring them to iTunes first. Maybe a special iPod. Although several sources claim the Beatles catalog is not included it tomorrow's annoucements and that DRM being dropped by EMI is the real issue.

Well we will have to wait until tomorrow to see what is announced. The invite to the media sent out on Sunday, with EMI announcing an "exciting new digital offering".

As I mentioned on a previous post, Apple is hosting an invite-only media event at the National Association of Broadcasters Conference in Vegas, on April 15th, at 11 AM. In previous years new product was introduced at this event. This year most surely I expect Apple to unveil a new version of Final Cut Studio. Some also have hopes for word an 8-core Mac Pro that has been rumored in the past months.

Apple is calling this one "Lights Camera Apple" and apparently the invitations are out to media and video pros. Apple plans to take over Venetian Ballrooms A through E, seating for the April 15th invitation-only event is said to be extremely limited. A reception will follow the presentation as in years past.

I usually dislike writing about predictions of any kind. I rarely write about rumors and over-hyped non-shipping products that may just become latest vapor-ware. Sure I read the rumor sites as well as everyone else, but I usually like to write about actual shipping products and "real" technologies instead of some of the "wild" rumors I hear about or read about. I have been around a long time and have seen so many products that were promised go up in smoke or not live up to the hype.
