Verizon has launched their promised high definition video on demand service for FiOS TV customers. I am happy to report it showed up on my HD boxes in New Jersey. Verizon is now offering HD VOD where FiOS TV is available in California, Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, eastern Pennsylvania, Rhode Island and Texas.

There is free content from major broadcast networks as sources like the NFL Network, HGTV, TLC, USA Network, Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, as well as a variety of special-interest channels, such as the World Fishing Network. Movies are being offered with prices ranging from $3.99 to $7.99. Seem a bit pricer than what I get from my Apple TV. I have not yet compared the quality of the HD.

FiOS TV customers subscribe to premium channels including HBO, Cinemax and the FiOS TV's movie package, which include Showtime, Starz, the Movie Channel, Encore and Sundance Channel can watch premium programming on demand.

Verizon claims they will have 10,000 titles in the video-on-demand library and plan to offer more than 1,000 high-definition video on demand titles this year.

SlingPlayer 2.0 is expected sometime early this year (Q1 2008) bringing significant new features, including an integrated EPG, Clip+Sling, 60 minute buffer to pause and rewind streams, and more. No actual date for release yet and expect the Mac version to take a little longer. Looks great.

New Slingbox is coming that will replace the current Slingbox PRO called the Slingbox PRO HD. Offering higher quality H.264 HD encoded high definition video making the video quality far better than the current Slingbox models. In order to see the better quality outside your home network Sling Media suggests a high upload speed of like FiOS offers.

Finally, some choice for apartment and townhouse dwellers. The Federal Communications Commission voted today to ban cable operators from cutting exclusive deals with owners of apartment buildings, condominiums and other multiple dwelling units (MDUs).

This certainly has dealt a major blow to Comcast, Cablevision, Time Warner Cable and other cable TV operators. Leaving the door open for Verizon's FiOS and AT&T's U-verse a chance to offer their TV wares to the 30% of Americans who live in MDUs.

“Exclusive contracts between incumbent cable operators and owners of [MDUs] have been a significant barrier to competition,” FCC chairman Kevin Martin said Wednesday. “Today’s order removes this barrier.”

Verizon has launched a 20Mbps symmetrical service in the NY/NJ/CT markets, with additional market launches on the horizon as part of their FiOS Internet service. This new service will allow for 20Mbps upload and download Intenet speeds starting at around $64.99 a month, depending on bundle and contract options.

According to the company's press release, the new tier comes with 1GB of online storage. Verizon is the first major ISP with plans of national deployment of the symmetrical service.

"We don't impose caps upon our subscribers," insisted Susan Retta, Vice President of broadband solutions for Verizon. "We expect customers who order this 20/20 service will want to use it frequently, and we intend to give them the bandwidth that they ordered and they expect."

Paul Tassinari, Verizon VP of National Engineering, insists the new tier highlights the "future proof" nature of the FiOS network, given that very little was done on the networking end to accommodate the faster upstream speeds. "We've heard our customers," he says. "They want to receive data as fast as they send it."

Offering symmetrical service will be a real marketing kick in the teeth for cable, whose slow upstream offerings frequently annoy our regular users. Notice Comcast this week slowing uploads for P2P file sharing and catching the totally deserved "heat" for it.

Verizon plans to offer similar symmetrical services soon in the 13 other states where the company offers FiOS Internet service, and to introduce a similar small-business offer.

Now it they can just get some added HD channels, better DVRs, and that promised new guide on FiOS TV!

First came the hype. Starting long ago with Project Mercury at CES. Then came the flyers (months ago). There was even a voice mail from Verizon last month telling me FiOS 2.0, which is basically an enhanced guide, was coming any minute, any second, or any moment and I should be prepared for ALL this great and incredible eye candy. Well no "real date" was given (strange, huh?). But STILL NO FiOS 2.0 for us existing customers in North Jersey! So Verizon why all the false starts?

I think it is a ridiculous to push vaporware (at least for existing North Jersey customers). I even had a reader email me to ask where my review of FiOS 2.0 was? I can't blame her as it was reported that "FiOS 2.0" was coming in April, May, June, July, and August on so many sites (as well as mine).

The comments I have seen on some popular forums has been a mixed bag for people who have gotten the new guide. So I guess I am happy I do not have it until the bugs are worked out. There are even reports of a fast tracked Verizon RFP out there for new set top boxes. Anyway, I have no FiOS 2.0 and have NO idea when I will. FiOS 2.0 before Xmas? What I really would like is more HD channels NOW. File this under ridiculous!

Verizon has sent out mailings touting the new online media guide for FiOS TV that is based on the work of Project Mercury. Project Mercury is a long awaited "in-house" development of a new media capabilities for the IMG (interactive media guide) and DVRs (digital video recorders) that is offered by FiOS TV. This has been called FiOS TV 2.0 by some.

The mailing I received had no deployment date mentioned. It seems Verizon is staggered the rollout of the new guide for FiOS TV users. These are the unconfirmed deployment dates:

• New customers only for NJ/PA/DE 8/2
• Extisting customers for NJ/PA/DE 8/28
• Other parts NJ 8/7
• NY 8/9
• CA 8/14
• FL 8/16
• TX 8/21
• MD 8/23
MA was originally scheduled for 8/2, but has been moved to sometime next week. There are reports of the Northern Virginia Region to be deployed sometime in mid August. Be interesting to see if this new guide is really an improvement or just new colors. Personally, I would just like to see some new HD channels.

Sling Media has recently released the new updated SlingPlayer 1.03.201 for the Mac. You may want to read this before you download and install the update if you use it on a Verizon FiOS TV connection!

The new SlingPlayer "includes many audio performance and quality improvements and also adds some new virtual remotes and a new version of firmware for your Slingbox. There are also some UI fixes and general bug fixes" according to Sling Media. But for FiOS customers it is missing the Verizon Remote skin that the prior versions had. My guess this is an oversight not to include a remote skin that was in the prior version. It appears that the current Windows version of SlingPlayer 1.4 has this same oversight. This Verizon Remote skin is not perfect, as it is the older remote for the Motorola boxes that Verizon uses. But is the best skin right now that Slingbox provides for FiOS! Sure beats the other choices you get for controlling your FiOS TV viewing.

Before you download the new version of SlingPlayer you will want to grab the Verizon Remote skin from the older SlingPlayer before you overwrite it with a new version. If you already lost your remote by upgrading you can get the skin from another computer that has not been upgraded or an older SlingPlayer for Mac version. If you are stuck and can not find the Verizon Remote, contact me and I can send you the file you will need.

This is how to get the Verizon Remote skin from the older version of SlingPlayer for Mac. Right click (Control + click) on the SlingPlayer Application icon in your Applications folder. From the pop up contextual menu choose Show Package Contents. Now lest dig into the applications package. Click on Contents -> Resources -> Remote and now copy the verizon.spr file to your desktop (just drag the file while holding down the Option key). This is the remote skin. Now you can update the player if you want, keeping the verizon.scr file in a safe place.

After updating the SlingPlayer on your Mac you will need to add the verizon.scr file to the same location on the new SlingPlayer app that has been updated. This is the file the new SlingPlayer is missing that contains your Verizon Remote.

OK, Windows users that are missing this Verizon Remote. Here is what you can do. Go the Programs -> SlingPlayer -> Remote and add the same verizon.scr file. Now launch SlingPlayer and connect to your Slingbox connected to FiOS. Under the Slingbox Menu -> Remote Control switch to the Verizon Remote and it should work fine.

Hopefully, Sling Media will fix this in a future versions. Be real nice if they give us a skin that looks like the current remote Verizon FiOS TV is using.

Verizon gets a last minute exemption from the set-top box rules that went into effect on July 1. The FCC turning down a blanket request to delay the new rules for most of the cable industry making exempt a few specific companies in addition to Verizon, primarily those companies who have agreed to go all-digital by February 2009.

These new rules mandated by the FCC are said to be designed to open up competition for set top boxes that are needed for most cable TV providers. The rule pushes providers to move their security features to a cable card that is in a slot on the STB (set top boxes) instead of having it built-in that most subscribers rent from them.

"In a new era with a competitive set-top box market, consumers will enjoy greater choice and reap the benefits of exciting and innovative features -- such as the ability to watch Internet videos or view slideshows of family vacations on their TV sets," FCC Chairman Kevin Martin said in a statement.

So far, most consumers may see an increase in price from their cable provider due to the mandatory upgrade they are being required to do. Maybe one day you will be able to buy the STB you want from a third party or that is the premise of this new rule from the FCC.

Verizon will soon be launching a new "home-grown" FiOS Interactive Media Guide also known as FiOS 2 or "Project Mercury." There have been some conflicting information to where the new software will be tested, New Jersey or Fort Wayne, Indiana, being reported on some other websites. Verizon initially indicated it would release the new IPG (Interactive Program Guide) in New Jersey and then start with rollouts nationwide via software upgrades this summer.

Originally announced at CES, the new program guide is the work of in-house developers hired by Verizon as they move further away from Microsoft's original software (as Comcast is also doing).

Verizon’s has posted an animated demo that shows the new interface. It does look pretty slick with some influence from MS Media Center with a little Xbox 360 blades and tabs. Search functionality includes television programming, recorded shows, and video on demand. Text can be entered via either an on-screen keyboard, a triple tap phone keypad, or scrollable list of letters. Usability though is the key and I am looking forward to trying it out when it launches. I have not been a big fan of the current software.

There are plenty of new features, including an all-new 32-bit interface with 8-bit transparency, trailers and poster art for On Demand content, and newer traffic and weather widgets. Click on the images above for larger screen shots from the FiOS presentation.

Verizon is raising the monthly price for a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) from $12.99 to $15.99. Notices are now being received to existing FiOS customers. This will apply to new services added and orders places on or after July 13, 2007. Have to say I am a bit surprised they are doing this already, as they have not yet established a large footprint in a competitive marketplace.

Other charges that are also changing is the cost of a full disconnect if it requires a technician to visit. This will cost $74.99, but you can always return your equipment yourself for free. Sure makes me wonder what the "triple-play" will cost from Verizon when the one year promotion is up? Seems they have already shown they are not afraid to raise prices for a DVR that is not exactly impressive. TiVo it is NOT.

Comcast is planning to drop Microsoft's television software and on-screen program guide from its digital cable boxes. The cable company will replace the Microsoft technology with GuideWorks software which Comcast is a part owner.

This sounds familiar as I posted that Verizon FiOS TV will also replace the Microsoft "bloatware" with their own home-brewed guide code-named "Project Mercury." Microsoft is no longer trying very hard to market this technology here in the U.S. having been absent from The Cable Show the past two years. Now about to lose its most important U.S. customer in Comcast. They do have a presence in Latin America.

There were some very early reports that Microsoft’s solution was cumbersome & expensive. Ed Graczyk, director of marketing for Microsoft TV, at that time blamed on faulty hardware & media “misinformation.”

Well it looks like Microsoft's bloated software has displeased their U.S. cable customers and they are both moving away from their solutions. Microsoft has never done well when they have to compete for business.

Comcast's decision "was not a big surprise," says Ed Graczyk, Microsoft TV's director of marketing, noting that Comcast has taken most of its set-top software development in-house with Gemstar, and is moving forward on a navigation and digital video recorder (DVR) integration deal with TiVo Inc.

Well this is no longer an option with my new FiOS TV install. This will be the telco's leap into the content business. Whatever you do, don’t call it a news channel! That was one message made clear, by Verizon spokesperson. While a lot of what is planned for FiOS1 is what been traditionally called news — weather, traffic, local happenings — FiOS1’s plans also call for local sports (college, high school and even Major League Baseball) as well as… wait for it… USER-GENERATED CONTENT, from “trained” citizen video journalists Verizon has drafted and will send out into the streets with videocams, ready to film… not news, we guess.

Verizon will be rolling out an update to their FiOS TV offering in a few weeks, first in the New Jersey market. After this upgrade the company is expected to release this nationally. FiOS 2.0 as some are calling it, is said to have an updated user guide, better search, and better IPTV functions. Verizon previewed some of the new FiOS TV features at CES 2007. This upgrade is part of "Project Mercury" that has Verizon improving and actually re-writing some of Microsoft's code that runs the supplied Motorola STB (set top box), as first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Verizon planned to roll out its FiOS TV service in three phases, adding more features with each phase. But there have been some reports that as the project progressed, Verizon encountered obstacles with the Microsoft code. Seems the Microsoft code powering FiOS was too big and bulky to run in the hardware provided by Motorola.

We had Verizon FiOS TV installed in our home on Saturday afternoon March 3, 2007, replacing analog cable service from Cablevision. FiOS Internet from Verizon was installed over a year ago and sure "smoked" our old cable modem in consistent service and speed. FiOS Internet was originally 15 MB download and 2 MB upload when first installed and was soon updated to 20 MB down and 5 MB up at no extra charge. The Cablevision Internet offering it replaced was not a great experience, never faster than 5 MB down and 768 KB up, no matter what they advertised. The price was about the same for FiOS Internet.
Well Verizon FiOS Internet became available in my town in New Jersey and I had it installed last week. I ordered the 15MB/2MB (15MB downstream, 2MB upstream) package in our home. Since the Internet is probably more important to us than TV, air, and maybe even food sometimes this was a big decision. Well not that big really, since our cable modem service provided by Cablevision has not exactly been great. No matter what the cable company claims about speed our expereince was never all that good. More about this later as I will compare Cablevision's Optimum Online and Verizon FiOS Internet.

I ordered Verizon FiOS online on Monday January 23, and the install was done on Thursday January 26. The install started at 9:15 AM and was complete by 12:45 PM. This was fast by FiOS install times as all the copper cables are removed from your house and replaced by fiber-to-the premises (FTTP). The small box or "NID" (Network Interface Device) is replaced with a larger "ONT" (Optical Network Terminal). This box is powered, not by the telco backup generators like on your copper service, but by your house power. So a small power supply and a battery backup is installed inside the house. The battery backup is in case of a power failure, allowing continued telephone service providing you have a telephone connected that does not require power. I keep one older plain telephone attached inside my house just in case.

The ONT (Optical Network Terminal) installed on the side of your house connects to the fiber back to the CO (telco's central office). It has connections for up to 4 POTS (plain old telephone service, using cat 3) lines, and Ethernet (cat 5) connection for very high speed Internet, and a RF connector (RG6) for TV (not available in my area yet). In many cases the existing cabling inside your house can be used, but Verizon technicians will route new cabling if it is needed. Unlike DSL, this is a "high-touch" installation with Verizon technician's there from beginning to end making sure your phones and Internet service works before they leave. In my case the installation was smooth and "flawless" and the technician was knowledgeable and pleasant. Not even my house full of many Macs, several Windows PCs, two VoIP Linksys PAP2-NA boxes, Tandberg T150 H.323 codec, Polycom H.323 codec, wireless network, 5 Airport Express units, a Giga-Bit Linksys 8-port switch, and two Elgato EyeHome boxes did not intimidate him. Our house is pretty well wired!

Apple releases Broadband Tuner 1.0 this week. It allows you "to take full advantage of very high speed Internet connections that have a high latency (5 Mbps or greater). This is especially good for Mac users on Verizon's FiOS Internet that may be experiencing slower speeds than FiOS allows.

The Broadband Tuner allows you to take full advantage of very high speed Verizon FiOS based Internet connections that have a high latency. The installer tweaks some system parameters.

There is an optional uninstaller that can be used to restore the settings that were in effect at the time just before the system parameters were changed.
