Apple has posted a website that showcases what they say are 'iPad ready' sites that have compatible with the iPad. Basically video sites that are non-Flash based and are using HTML5 to deliver their video content.

The sites include: CNN, Reuters, NYTimes, Vimeo, Time, Major League Baseball, The White House, Virgin, Sports Illustrated, Flickr, People Magazine and TED.

iPad features Safari, a mobile web browser that supports the latest web standards — including HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript. Here are just a few of the sites that take advantage of these web standards to deliver content that looks and functions beautifully on iPad.

You can submit your site here. Apple also has posted technical information so you can preparing your web content for iPad. I expect this list to grow pretty fast!

This worm, called Conficker, as well as Downadup and Kido, has infected unknown millions of Windows computers, and is expected to become active on April 1, 2009. For now, researchers are unsure of what the worm may do; it is just sitting on infected computers waiting for instructions. Researchers think it will connect to remote servers and download code and then become virulent.

This worm, which affects Windows computers, has no effect on Mac OS X; at least not yet. Intego's Virus Monitoring Center is on full alert in case a Mac OS X variant of this worm should appear, but, so far, Mac users are in the clear. However, Mac users who run Windows on their Macs are at the same risk as those running Windows on PCs.

Is it hype or will it be Armageddon? See ComputerWorld FAQ: Conficker clock ticks toward April 1 deadline.

I guess tomorrow Windows users will laugh or cry!

I have been recently asked what apps I like for Twitter. So here you go.

On my Macs I use TweetDeck [free based on Adobe Air]. I have tried several other apps like Twhirl [free] and Twitterific [$14.95], but keep coming back to TweetDeck.

On my iPhone I use Tweetie [$2.99 iTunes], I have tried most all of the Twitter apps for the iPhone as there are many to choose from, but Tweetie is my favorite.

For Twitter integration for ReelSmart.com WordPress blog I am using Tweeter Tools by Alex King. This free plugin allows for each post to be tweeted, your current tweets to be displayed on your blog and it also allows you to send tweets directly from your WordPress blog.

For those who have never used Twitter and are trying to figure out why you would want to use it. Check out Twitter in plain engish.

If you have a favorite Twitter related app I did not mention let me know. Also don't forget to follow me on Twitter.

No details have been released, but the second generation Kindle is a good bet.

The Kindle 2 maybe a major overhaul to the original reader with a smaller, more rounded and more ergonomic design with a directional pad instead of a touchstrip and more comfortable keys. Most expect the new Kindle to continue shipping with free 3G cellular access for downloading books and viewing websites but to shed the SD card slot for built-in flash memory.

Pandora has been my favorite web radio service for some time that I have written about many times. One of the very first iPhone apps I downloaded was the free Pandora app from the iTunes App Store.

Why should free web-based radio have to pay almost twice as much as in royalties as satellite radio that charges a monthly subscription or traditional radio that pays no such fee at all? Well because the power of the RIAA and SoundExchange say so.

"We're approaching a pull-the-plug kind of decision," said Tim Westergren, who founded Pandora. "This is like a last stand for webcasting."

The Washington Post has a good article on how webcasting may soon be in the dead pool. I makes me wonder how the RIAA thinks this will help business, slow P2P file sharing, or help artists?

84 year old Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, who worked against Net Neutrality with his ridiculous "the Internet is a series of tubes" rant, has been caught for allegedly failing to report $250,000 in gifts from the Alaska oil pipeline company, VECO Corporation. Guess he thought he could make money from all the tube companies.

The now famous rant:
“Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially.

“… the Internet is not something you just dump something on. It’s not a truck. It’s a series of tubes. And if you don’t understand those tubes can be filled, and if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it’s going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material.”

Apple is prepping its users as well as its infrastructure for the MobileMe launch this week. Soon we will say goodbye to .Mac and hello to MobileMe. This will be the biggest transition Apple has made to its online service since the iTools to .Mac transition which seems like a distant memory. See the guided tour of MobileMe here.

From the .Mac site:

MobileMe Launch
7/9/2008, 6pm-12am PT

As part of the MobileMe launch, www.mac.com will be taken offline at 6pm PT on Wednesday, July 9th.

Members will be unable to access www.mac.com or any .Mac services during this time with the exception of .Mac Mail accessed via a desktop application, iPhone, or iPod touch.

MobileMe will be available as soon as possible during this maintenance window.

MobileMe should go live between 6PM-12AM tomorrow!

The linking we are talking about usually falls on "fair use" and even probably adds traffic to the original story from the AP. I will follow Michael Arrington's lead and just forget the AP exists.

Adobe in their move to bring services to the web (they recently launched Photo Express) has launched a beta of Acrobat.com that offers file sharing and storage, PDF converter, online word processor, and web conferencing — you can use to create and share documents, communicate in real time, and simplify working with others. The service is free.

One of the services being offered is Adobe ConnectNow a free version of Adobe's web conferencing solution they acquired when they bought Macromedia (Adode Connect was Macromedia Breeze). Adobe ConnectNow is web conferencing that utilizes the Flash plugin already installed on 98% of computers, so it requires no installation. Adobe ConnectNow allows users to conference online using nothing more than a web browser to share ideas via audio and video, share screens, chat, remote control desktops and use a whiteboard as they meet in a virtual room.

Reducing travel costs especially with gas prices going through the roof, save time, and increase productivity is the goal of web conferencing. Having the solution that is easy to access and simple to use is key however.

Also part of Acrobat.com is Adobe Buzzword that allows you to write and collaborate on documents online as well as creating and converting PDFs. Drag and dropping of files and folders from your local computer directly into your Acrobat.com account, and browsing, previewing, sharing or publishing files easily from your computer can be accomplished using Adobe AIR.

Of course there is only one Steve Perry, but Arnet filled Perry's stylings pretty, Faithfully.

Unless you have been visiting another planet I am sure you have heard that Microsoft has been busy trying to take over Yahoo. Microsoft's desperation is all over this deal, $44 billion, then $47 billion offered to buy Yahoo, the distant number two in search to Google who of course dominates.

Now Microsoft is planning on offering money just to use their search. Sounds like the 1990's all over again with the folks from Redmond trying to "buy" their way into a market. Well hell it worked before.

This time things are a little different. Microsoft, the company with a disputable 90 percent of the desktop, has single digits in search. They have been chasing the search leader Google for years without much success.

In fact, the April search numbers are out from comScore, the guys that track this sort stuff, showing Google again extending their lead in the U.S. Google search grabbed a record-high 61.6 percent of the U.S. market in April, up from 59.8 percent in March while Yahoo, Microsoft, AOL, and Ask all dipped lower.

The numbers stack up in U.S. search like this for April:
The numbers stack up in U.S. search like this for April:

Google 61.6 percent

Yahoo! 20.4 percent

Microsoft 9.1 percent

AOL 4.6 percent

Ask 4.7 percent

The numbers in Europe favors Google even more with Google pushing close to 80 percent of searches.

Microsoft's search technology has been horrendous with promises year after year of it being better than Google. All the wasted time has now got Microsoft chasing a verb.

Even if Microsoft gets control of Yahoo they would still lag way behind Google. If they convert Yahoo to their own technology, they may lose engineering talent from Yahoo and all they really bought was some web traffic that may not stay.

Microsoft's recently announced "cash back" plan shows their innovation plan may be failing, so spending dollars to get at least some footing in the market is the gimmick. Even Microsoft does not have that much money. More important do they have the time? I think not.

This week Time Warner announced another split after the AOL merger fiasco. They are now shedding Time Warner Cable. This shows how big mergers where corporate culture is so different rarely works.

Microsoft should spend more time listening to the old Smith-Barney ads. Remember? “We make money the old-fashioned way. We EARN it” (Smith Barney).

Why may I ask can Zoho add support for VBA Macros on their FREE "online" spreadsheet while the expensive Office for Mac 2008 upgrade can't?

Zoho has announced a huge update to Zoho Sheet that includes the ability to import and create VBA macros in your spreadsheets. Granted they only support about 50% of the functionality at this point, but it is better than the 0% I got for paying Microsoft $240 for an upgrade.

Let's not forget that NeoOffice the free open source Office alternative also supports VBA Macros. Sounds like a good incentive NOT to buy an upgrade to Microsoft Office if you are on a Mac.

WSJ Tech Guy, Walt Mossberg's take on the state of broadband. I found this interesting, especially the points of the Apple TV and what he says about a 3G iPhone going 3G in 60 days (around 6:53 in). I could not to agree more.

Seems clear what the Yahoo board members think of the $44.6 billion bid from Microsoft to take them over. Microsoft's offer is about to turn well, hostile. In a letter from Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer to Yahoo's board of directors, the threat is clear.

If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the initiation of a proxy contest to elect an alternative slate of directors for the Yahoo! board.... It is unfortunate that by choosing not to enter into substantive negotiations with us, you have failed to give due consideration to a transaction that has tremendous benefits for Yahoo!'s shareholders and employees...

A hostile takeover of Yahoo will be ugly. While things in Google-land are not too shabby with the recent A-OK from the EU, on the Double-Click acquisition, Google's search share rising, the "win" of its will on the 700 MHz spectrum auction without spending for a license and Andriod making headlines. I still think a Microsoft-Yahoo merge is a bad idea for both companies and will NOT help stop the freight train that is Google.

If you are a Sirius Satellite Radio subscriber and use a Mac you will want the free Starplayr by NiceMac.

Not only does Starplayr allow you to listen to Sirius on your Mac, but it can also record the Sirius channel converting the broadcast ASF format to MP3’s which are then automatically added your iTunes library. Now this is cool. You can even record one channel while you listen to another, think TiVo for Sirius on your Mac.

You can record the Howard Stern Show for listening on your iPod using the included iCal scripts, allowing you to automate the recording of your favorite shows. No more waking up at 6 AM to record or listen. You can even Pause the music.

The music player can display track information like - artist, title and album. Starplayr can also display album art of the currently playing track, but does take up quite a bit of desktop real estate.

Maybe we will see an iPhone version of Starplayr in the App Store coming in June. That will give you Sirius Radio on your iPhone and iPod touch!

Safari 3.1 also supports CSS Web fonts, and Apple claims it loads Web pages 1.9 times faster than Microsoft's Internet Explorer 7 and 1.7 times faster than Firefox 2.

The browser requires Mac OS X 10.4.11 or higher, or Windows XP or Windows Vista. Safari 3.1 is free and available via Apple's Software Update application, or as a download at the Apple web site.
