OK, Mac owners you updated your iPad and iPhones to the latest iOS 4.2 for all those great new features. Well one of the first things you might have discovered is that AirPrint was not really what you were hoping for. First off it only works with a handful of printers, probably not the ones you may own!

There are a few options, but I recommend this one - download ecamm's Printopia for Mac. This $10 app adds printing to most any printer you already own that your Mac can print to. It also adds a few other nifty things like sending print jobs as PDF's directly or to your Dropbox account saving paper.

Printopia works with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) and PowerPC Mac also. ecamm alows for a free demo version so you can try before you buy.

AT&T has revamped their data plans that will take effect on June 7 for all new smartphone contracts. These new plans will finally bring iPhone tethering (iPhone OS 4.0 will be required) while slamming the door on unlimited data for a set price. These data plans also apply to iPad 3G owners.

AT&T has announced two new data plans priced at $15 for 200MB and $25 capped at 2GB per month. If you go over 2GB on the higher-end plan you will be charged an additional $10 for another 1GB of data use. Tethering the iPhone will cost you an additional $20 per month when iPhone 4.0 arrives, most likely at WWDC.

Current 'unlimited data' plans for existing iPhone and iPad customers will still be in effect. However, once your contract renewal comes up, you may have to say bye to unlimited data.

These new plans may be the start of ushering in the age of metered broadband where you will pay for what you use. Something I have no issue with. Some iPhone users may actually see a savings from this switch as more than 98% of iPhone users (according to AT&T) are below the 2GB data usage. If you use WiFi a lot at home and work and use apps that load map data onto the device instead of fetching it from the network, like TomTom or Navigon for GPS when traveling you probably fall into this category.

UPDATE via AT&T's Facebook page:
Customers on the current $30 smartphone 'unlimited' data plan can keep that plan when upgrading hardware (new iPhone or iPad) without switching to the $25 / 2GB DataPro plan if they choose. However, if you want the $20 tethering option it will require the DataPro plan.

An online AT&T rep claims that the iPhone is not being sold to New Yorkers (and some New Jersey zip codes) via their website, although it remains available via the Apple store website and via both Apple and AT&T physical stores.

Some blogs claim it is because of network congestion, but that would be odd since it is available in a store for use in NY/NJ. Their are some reports of online fraud. I guess we will have to wait for an official statement.

If you've been holding off on updating your iPhone to OS 3.1.2 to keep your jailbreak or carrier unlocks, blackra1n and blacksn0w are here. blackra1n is the easiest jailbreak tool ever, 2 minutes and one-click hacktivation, unlocking (blacksn0w), and enabling tethering support all in one app.

Don't expect the fun to last forever. Apple will be trying to ruin jailbreaker's day lby boosting the iPhone security. But for now, iPhone OS 3.1.2 and its updated 05.11.07 baseband can freed.

Download blackra1n. Install it on your Mac or PC. Connect your iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch. Follow the easy instructions and in less than 2 minutes blackra1n will jailbreak your iPhone. Once blackra1n is installed on your iPhone you can install Cydia, Rock and blacksn0w.

Cydia and Rock are unofficial app stores were you will find many apps Apple would not allow. Using blacksn0w you can unlock your iPhone for use on whatever GSM/UTMS carrier you prefer. Note US users only other option is T-mobile, which will only allow your iPhone to work on EDGE.

blackra1n and blacksn0w only work in tethered mode with new iPhone 3GS and iPod touch models that use a different bootloader than older models. That means the device has to be tethered to a computer with blackra1n running whenever the device is rebooted; otherwise, the jailbreak is undone on reboot. Also, blacksn0w won't unlock the baseband on EDGE-only iPhones. For that, GeoHot blackra1n creator, recommends the BootNeuter tool. For more info see GeoHot's blog.

Anyway, AT&T has announced prior to CTIA that they will allow Skype, Vonage, and maybe even Google Voice to operate on the AT&T 3G network. In the past VoIP apps were only allowed to use WiFi.

AT&T is doing the correct thing here folks. Even if it now appears they have thrown Apple under the bus. Apple claims they will move swiftly to allow developers to update their VoIP apps for 3G. Now maybe Apple can get off the fence and accept Google Voice into the AppStore.

In a move that is as juvenile as I have ever seen, Palm releases WebOS 1.2.1 update that restores syncing to the Pre with iTunes 9. Why is this juvenile you may ask? Because it does not help Pre customers or follow the policy of the USB-IF, the industry group that has already shot them down for using an USB ID to mimic an iPhone.

Since the Palm Pre can not play back any DRM content like videos sold in the iTunes Store or use any apps sold, there is no reason to do this, but to annoy Apple. Maybe Palm should be working on apps and instead of wasting their time with this. All Palm needs to do is create their OWN desktop syncing software like RIM has for the Blackberry.

Maybe Palm should worry more about all the units it has not sold and the heavy discounts being offered at Wal-Mart for the Pre ($79.99 after rebate). In fact Pre sales have been quite dismal, allowing Verizon Wireless to announce they are no longer interested in selling the Pre.

OK, Apple what's next? Your turn.

I was happy about two things, seeing Steve Jobs is recovering and a few useful features in iTunes 9.

AT&T is plagued with problems including high prices, poor connectivity, missing functionality, and slow speeds. Especially, for iPhone owners. The same customers that helped AT&T make billions in profits. Apple does its own advertising and support saving the carrier large barrels of cash. AT&T has been free to FOCUS on one thing, their network. BUT, have they? Seth the 'blogger guy' claims so.

Let's take a look. In two years of having the iPhone AT&T still suffers from dropped calls. In my New Jersey/New York area I have noticed this has not only not improved, it has actually gotten worse. No MMS. Finally MMS is coming on September 25, LATE! Most cheap cell phones available, on AT&T have had MMS for years! There is no tethering for the iPhone with no announcement of a plan in sight. Yet if I bought a Blackberry on AT&T, I would have the choice of a tethering plan!

I can not use SlingPlayer Mobile on AT&T's 3G network on my iPhone, but it is available on Blackberry and Windows Mobile phones offered on the same AT&T network. Upgrading your iPhone from 3G to 3GS was a bit steep as AT&T, even with all their lousy service, cut customers little slack on the price.

Google Voice and many other apps have been rejected, removed, or banned from the iPhone. Sure Apple is taking the blame, but most of these apps are available on other mobile phones, again, offered on the same AT&T network.

Many iPhone customers are paying over $140 a month to AT&T. What does AT&T do with all this money? They spend it on PR, not the network it seems. Even the NY Times seemed to blame iPhone owners for actually expecting to use what they are paying for. They call it a data guzzler. So I guess they expect people to spend $199 plus a two year contract, spending over $100 per month, and NOT USE IT! WTF? The iPhone is NOT a car from ObamaMotors or the Hummer! It's a smartphone.

AT&T's excuses have already worn thin. What's is the point of upgrading a network for future customers if when that time comes you won't have any customers left?

AT&T, stop wasting your money on silly graphics, stupid graphs and dopey so called bloggers - FIX the F-ing network. Excuses are like a$$holes, everyone has one and they are all cracked. If you do not turn this thing around by improving your service ASAP, their will be a MASS EXODUS to whatever carrier gets the iPhone, which will happen soon enough!

iPhone owners should tell Apple NOT to renew any exclusive agreement with AT&T - ONE thing that will work is competition!

AT&T said that iPhone owners will FINALLY get multimedia messaging or MMS on September 25th, missing summer by few days. A notice on the AT&T website, says that a software update enabling MMS will be pushed to iPhones (3G and 3GS models) with no additional charge (beyond existing messaging fees) for MMS service.

Apple promised both iPhone MMS service and tethering (which lets you use your phone as a modem for a PC on a 3G network) back in January for "late" summer. Most carriers around the world have implemented MMS and many also offering tethering, but AT&T even missed summer.

And as it now looks iPhone users will have to wait longer for tethering. An AT&T spokesman says there is no date yet for the feature, which is available now—at an additional monthly fee—for other devices such as BlackBerrys.

Engadget got there hands on a AT&T response to the FCC investigation of the disappearing Google Voice apps from the iPhone.

In a letter to the FCC, AT&T claims "had no role in any decision by Apple to not accept the Google Voice application." So it appears that AT&T not only has thrown Apple under the bus, they backed over them. This will not end AT&T's involvement in App store approval shenanigans entirely, since the letter also says "AT&T has had discussions with Apple regarding only a handful of applications that have been submitted to Apple for review where, as described below, there were concerns that the application might create significant network congestion." Not only did that result in CBS and MobiTV killing the Final Four app's ability to stream video over 3G, it also explains what happened to SlingPlayer Mobile. This while all iPhone users are STILL waiting for AT&T to get us MMS and a tethering plan!

Apple has also answered the FCC with claiming Apple acted alone in these decisions.

"Apple is acting alone and has not consulted with AT&T about whether or not to approve the Google Voice application. No contractual conditions or non-contractual understandings with AT&T have been a factor in Apple’s decision-making process in this matter."

More:

"Apple alone makes the final decisions to approve or not approve iPhone applications.

There is a provision in Apple’s agreement with AT&T that obligates Apple not to include functionality in any Apple phone that enables a customer to use AT&T’s cellular network service to originate or terminate a VoIP session without obtaining AT&T’s permission. Apple honors this obligation, in addition to respecting AT&T’s customer Terms of Service, which, for example, prohibit an AT&T customer from using AT&T’s cellular service to redirect a TV signal to an iPhone. From time to time, AT&T has expressed concerns regarding network efficiency and potential network congestion associated with certain applications, and Apple takes such concerns into consideration."

So it appears Apple plans to take on ALL the criticism themselves, OK then. Let the fun begin...

It seems that both Apple and AT&T are full of crap in their answers. AT&T claims they knew nothing and Apple swears they are STILL studying it! Absolute, BULLSHIT in my opinion. There are so many ridiculous things in Apple's answers, I will do a separate post on it taking them one-by-one!

iPhone 3G and 3GS turn-by- turn GPS apps come in two basic flavors. Subscription apps that you pay monthly for that the maps are downloaded as needed over the cellular network or pay once apps that load all the maps and info directly onto your device.

The subscription apps usually run about $10 a month and can suffer in performance if you are in a bad cellular data area. The pay once apps, since they download all the needed maps only need GPS signal and usually perform better. The downside is a large download to your iPhone weighing in at over 1GB in most cases. Updates on the iPhone usually means downloading the entire app again.

You would think the map data would be more up to date on the subscription apps, but in practice they are usually not. So it comes down to how you want to pay for the app - every month or once. Personally, I have tried both and prefer to own the app instead of subscribe. Luckily for iPhone 3G and 3GS owners there is plenty of choice.

I am a bit of a GPS junkie and have tried most all of the turn-by- turn GPS navigation apps on my iPhone 3G and 3GS. Plus I own Garmin nuvi and my Toyota has a built-in factory GPS. I have no excuse for getting lost, but it still happens once in awhile.

Here is my mini-review for all the major turn-by-turn GPS navigation apps available on the iPhone. See videos and reviews.

It is a fairly straight forward procedure with one little twist.

You can re-use redsn0w v0.8 we released a few weeks ago to jailbreak today’s 3.0.1 update. Just let iTunes update or restore you to official 3.0.1 then run redsn0w. The only “trick” is that when redsn0w asks you to identify the IPSW used, point it at the 3.0 IPSW instead of the 3.0.1 one. After the jailbreak, reinstall ultrasn0w 0.9 if you need the unlock.

Ultrasn0w is still capable of unlocking a 3.0.1 device so your iPhone can accept any SIM card as the 3.0.1 software update does not change your baseband.

Note: Purplesn0w does not work.

It pains me to write this post. Recently, Apple has seemed to have turned a corner in the way they treat apps in the App Store. They are now rejecting and removing without notice any apps that they or AT&T see as competition to services they offer or will offer. Apple seems to be abusing users and developers with the one source for apps and locked down device that the iPhone is.

Scenario: Developer works hard creating an app - spending time and money, trying best to follow Apple's stated, but changing rules. The app then gets rejected without a decent or reasonable explanation. Worse YET the app gets accepted into the App Store, gets updated several times over a period of time. iPhone owners buy and depend on the app. Then without notice after months of being in the app store the app gets REMOVED by Apple without notice or a decent explanation!

This leaves developers stuck as well as users. Users are left with an app they paid for that can no longer be updated and may possibly even stop working. All while the same apps are freely available on Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and Nokia in many cases - even on the same carrier (AT&T)! This devalues your investment.

Why is this not done on Blackberry, Windows Mobile, Palm and Nokia devices. Simple, they are not locked to just ONE app store that is controlled by a single vendor!

Apple is actively trying to stop the U.S. Copyright Office to allow an exemption from the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 requested by the EFF to make jailbreaking legal. Apple has seemed to have abused their ultimate control of what you can do with your iPhone. They need to either get real with App Store rules or unlock the iPhone for third party developers! Rejecting apps just because you can should not be acceptable.

Take a look here and see just how Apple treats developers:

Developer of VoiceCentral: http://www.riverturn.com/blog/?p=455

Developer of GV Mobile: http://www.seankovacs.com/

What can you do? COMPLAIN!

Complain to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/iphone.html

Complain to AT&T: 1-800-331-0500

Apple seems to be on the wrong side of the issue involving full control over peoples devices as featured in this Wired article. Apple has enjoyed a closed business model with the iPhone since it debuted in 2007. After various rejections and removal of apps from their App Store recently, some customers are outraged. These rejections and removals were obviously ONLY done because it threatened Apple or their U.S. carrier partner, AT&T business model.

In the past, some rejections of apps from the App Store were done because of bandwidth issues, porn or moral reasons, copyright violations or to protect users information. Now Apple has seemed to have turned a corner. The App Store policies of late seem to have taken on a schizophrenic state leaving developers and iPhone customers questioning this ultimate control. Some developers even leaving the iPhone platform or offering their apps on Cydia for jailbroken iPhones.

Example: SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone not allowed to stream over 3G while the same app available on the same carrier (AT&T) is allowed to do this on the Blackberry and Windows Mobile platform. Making it worse is another app allowed in the iPhone App Store, MLB.com At Bat 2009 can stream every Major League Baseball game over 3G (for premium customers). So was it really a bandwidth issue you might ask?

Recently Apple removed GV Mobile and VoiceCentral, both available in the App Store since May, while rejecting Google Voice official app. These Google Voice apps are NOT VoIP applications and use little bandwidth, they simply threaten AT&T's business model in a small way. Again these apps are available on other mobile platforms. Even ones that run on AT&T's network!

In a move filled with FUD that is reminiscence of what some might think is associated with another company in Redmond, Apple is pulling out all the stops in a battle with the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). The EFF has requested that the U.S. Copyright Office legalize the widespread practice of jailbreaking, in which iPhone owners hack their devices to accept software that hasn’t been approved for distribution through the iPhone App Store. Jailbreaking is a software hack that takes less than 10 minutes and is reversible.

The Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 says “no person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title.” But under the law, every three years the Librarian of Congress and the Copyright Office must consider the public’s requests for exemptions to that anti-circumvention language.

The EFF has asked the regulators for the DMCA exemption, (.pdf) which would allow consumers to run any app on the phone, including those not authorized by Apple.

Apple is now claiming to the U.S. Copyright Office that the nation’s cellphone networks could suffer “potentially catastrophic” cyberattacks by iPhone-wielding hackers at home and abroad if iPhone owners are permitted to legally jailbreak the iPhone.

So hackers will only do this if it is legal according to Apple?

The Wired article points out, they "had no idea the iPhone was so dangerous. We’re gratified that Apple locked down this potential weapon of mass disruption before hackers could unleash cybarmageddon. This also explains why Apple rejected the official Google Voice App for the iPhone this week. We thought it was because Google Voice posed a threat to AT&T’s exclusivity deal with Apple. Now we know it threatened national security."

Fred von Lohmann, EFF attorney who made the request, said Apple’s latest claims are preposterous. During a May public hearing on the issue in Palo Alto, California, he told regulators there were as many as a million unauthorized, jailbroken phones.

In an interview Tuesday, he said he suspected those phones have not been used to destroy mobile phone towers. “As far as I know, nothing like that has ever happened,” he said.

He added that, if Apple’s argument was correct, the open-source Android phone from Google on T-Mobile networks would also be a menace to society. ”This kind of theoretical threat,” von Lohmann said, “is more FUD than truth.”

This makes me wonder, does Apple plan on prosecuting its own customers? I doubt it, but they are fighting hard to keep the iPhone completely locked down to only one App Store they completely control with its ever changing rules.

Apple's ultimate control over the App Store and iPhone users has certainly turned a corner. In the long run they will lose, no matter what the U.S. Copyright Office decides. Did they not learn anything from the record industry? What good does it do for Apple's business to abuse their control by rejecting and removing apps like Google Voice, while they will be freely available on competing mobile platforms? Has Apple's success gone to their heads?

People for years have had the ease of installing any application they wanted on their computing devices and will seek to do the same with the new mobile devices. If Apple uses these heavy-handed practices on the fabled Apple iTablet it may not be so successful. Pissing off developers is not a practice that will keep bringing success easily.

Apple had an advantage with developers with the promise of financial gain with the iPhone, iPod touch and the App Store. They are slowly losing that trust with their heavy-handed approach. There seem to be rule changes for App Store approval regularly. Even when and app is approved and sold to many iPhone users, Apple at a whim has removed them without notice. Leaving the developer's time and effort wasted and iPhone customers with an app that can no longer be updated wasting their money.

Apple needs to keep a reasonable balance. Right now they have not with their recent App Store shenanigans. These practices can only lead to losing developers to more open mobile platforms allowing them to innovate more freely and lost customers. If Apple keeps slowing or removing innovative apps to load up the App Store with fart apps they will have the smell all to themselves.

GV Mobile was available in the App Store since May and has received plenty of praise from iPhone users with Google Voice accounts. Originally approved by Phil Schiller, Apple VP of Marketing, personally, GV Mobile was removed yesterday from the App Store without much notice.

Apple removed GV Mobile, along with all the Google Voice apps, leaving developer Sean Kovacs, with his popular app without a home. So instead of just allowing the app to go away, he has decided to distribute it via Cydia, which means you can download it for free if you have a jailbroken device.

The public outcry has been substantial, but unlikely to change Apple or AT&T decision. Google's official Google Voice app was also rejected by Apple.

The list of features for GV Mobile remains the same for the Cydia version.

GV Mobile allows users of Google Voice to:

Dial numbers via the iPhone address book or typing on the keypad - when the call is made it uses your cell minutes, but it shows your Google Voice number in the Caller ID

Full SMS support (view historic, reply, send new)

Retrieve and delete recent call history

Playback and delete voicemails

Take calls from different phones other than your iPhone

Enable or disable the phones that Google Voice forwards your calls to

Add or delete phones that Google Voice forwards call to

Note: GV Mobile is NOT a VoIP application and you must have a free Google Voice account to use it.

You can download GV Mobile free of charge from Cydia via the ModMyi repo. Need to know how to jailbreak your iPhone? See these posts:

In the words of Sean Kovacs "It’s so easy, your grandma could do it!" I agree. It is totally reversible also. I am proposing a "National Jailbreak Day" for all iPhone users. Now THAT would send a message.

Even wonder what this "jailbreak" stuff was all about when it comes to the iPhone? First I think an explanation is needed between the difference of "jailbreaking" and "unlocking" the iPhone.

Jailbreaking is a process where your iPhone's firmware is modified to allow code that is "unsigned" and "unapproved" by Apple to run on your iPhone. Jailbreaking adds "unofficial" application installers to be put your iPhone such as Cydia, Icy or Installous by Appulo.us, which let you download many 3rd applications that are unavailable in the official iTunes App Store. Jailbreaking also allows you to add tweaks and modify your iPhone in many ways.

I just purchased two BlueAnt M1 speaker systems - one for my home and the other for my office. I was looking to find a nice wireless speaker to use with my iPhone 3GS and Blackberry Curve.

The BlueAnt M1 Portable Stereo Speakers, $169.99 [Amazon] filled this perfectly as it features rechargeable batteries that will run the device for around 10 hours (medium volume level), has an output of 28 watts RMS and is compatible with any Bluetooth A2DP device including computers, PDAs and mobile phones. A nice added feature is its stereo 3.5mm jack on the rear so you can use the speakers with your non-Bluetooth devices connected directly.

The first thing you will notice is just how loud these portable speakers are as they deliver 28 Watt RMS (making it one of the most powerful portable Bluetooth speakers in the world as claimed by BlueAnt). With an internal Subwoofer they sound good, especially for Bluetooth speakers.

Pairing my iPhone 3GS, Blackberry Curve and MacBook Pro was quick and easy. The BlueAnt M1 can be paired with up to eight devices that support Bluetooth A2DP profile. The BlueAnt M1 also supports AVRCP for remote control (Audio Video Remote Control Profile) that allows you to control most Bluetooth devices from the BlueAnt M1 front mounted controls. Unfortunately the iPhone 3G or 3GS does not yet support this feature (play-pause does work with iPhone), but testing it with my Blackberry it worked perfectly. The BlueAnt M1 also automatically re-connects to Bluetooth devices.

Included with the BlueAnt M1 Portable Stereo Speakers is a nice well formed carrying case that allows you to use the portable speakers with even removing the case. So these speakers can go most anywhere.

Pairing it with my Blackberry Curve allowed me to stream music and Pandora with a range of the usual Bluetooth specs of about thirty feet. Pairing it with my iPhone 3GS truly a blast due to all the apps that are available for the iPhone.

I used my iPhone 3GS to stream iPod, Pandora, Slacker, AOL Radio, Concert Vault, FlyCast, iheartradio, ShoutCast, SlingPlayer, Stitcher, Tuner, etc. BUT fire up most any game on your iPhone and the audio from the BlueAnt M1 adds a new dimension to the gameplay!

Playing piano or guitar in the Moo-Cow-Music Band app is quite fun over the BlueAnt M1 speakers.

If while you are having all this fun playing games or playing music and a phone call comes in the BlueAnt M1 speakers will automatically fade the music and allow you to answer the phone. No speakerphone however.

One of the most glaring features missing from MobileMe and the iPhone was an easy way to view subscribed MobileMe calendars on your iPhone. For years I have shared these calendars with friends and family on my Macs. Now finally as part of the iPhone 3.0 update it can be easy done on my iPhone.

To view calendars that are published to MobileMe on your iPhone your friends and family just need to send an email inviting you from iCal.

To publish an iCal calendar, simply click the calendar and select Publish from the Calendar menu on your Mac. Now send an email inviting others MobileMe users to subscribe.

Your friends and family can now subscribe to your published calendars and view them on their iPhone or iPod touch running iPhone OS 3.0. They simply view the invitation email on their device and tap the link to set up the subscription to the calendar. For more details on how to publish calendars to MobileMe and subscribe to them, please read this support article.

Note: You MUST have iPhone 3.0 running for this to work.

Some road warriors may be a bit disappointed that AT&T has still not announced plans for tethering their iPhone to their computer to share its network connection. This is a real help to some users as they can use their iPhone's 3G cellular connection with their laptop when there is no WiFi to be had.

As I am sure AT&T eventually bring a tethering plan to the iPhone, especially since iPhone 3.0 includes features for tethering via Bluetooth and USB in the OS. Don't expect it to be free or even cheap. Tethering plans tend to run $30 or more a month with most carriers.

In the meantime, Cleve Nettles over at 9to5mac has a quick tutorial to get tethering working with your Mac in a few easy steps.

AT&T was probably the main reason that Nullriver's NetShare, an app that allows you to use proxies to share your iPhone's cellular connection with your Mac, was quickly pulled from the App Store. I was one of the lucky ones who purchased this app as it was only available for a few hours before being yanked forever from the US iTunes App Store.

Well I am happy to say that NetShare is STILL working with iPhone 3.0! Best $10 I ever spent.

Other solutions for serious road warriors is to buy a separate broadband plan and pick yourself a CradlePoint Router [see my review] or check into the new MyFi Mobile Hotspot from VerizonWireless. With these devices you can have WiFi almost anywhere even in your car!

These solutions are a bit more expensive, but may well worth it to some users that need a connection 24/7.

We got off the phone with AT&T customer service and were told that as of a few minutes ago they have adjusted their policy on iPhone 3GS upgrade pricing. IF you purchased an iPhone 3G between June - August 2008 you will now be eligible for an upgrade to the iPhone 3Gs IF you spent more than $99 per month! So you would save $200 and pay the same amount as a new customer and get a new two year contract.

This does NOT help me at all as I spend about $84 (includes taxes) as I am a bigger data user than talker! Bummer. See the AT&T Open Letter here. Basically it seems that AT&T is just allowing customers that spend over $99 per month eligibility for an upgrade three weeks early. Big deal. So it is STILL cheaper to cancel an account with them $175 minus $5 per month passed than KEEP loyal customers!

Ask any AT&T Wireless customer what they think of the carrier, especially an iPhone owner and you will most likely get a mixed bag of answers. Probably more negative than positive. Network issues have been commonplace. Lately however they have sunk to a new low! Apple needs to get another carrier to keep these guys in line.

Recently they killed off SlingPlayer Mobile for iPhone in its ability to work on their 3G network, forcing the developer to sell the app as WiFi only. While Blackberry and Windows Mobile phones on AT&T get to use SlingPlayer on 3G.

It has been known that the iPhone 3.0 software would support MMS and Tethering for many months. iPhone 3.0 software will be released on June 17. AT&T will not have MMS, a basic cellphone function that even cheap non-smartphones have, working to later this summer. WTF, was my reaction! Tethering, NOT on AT&T yet for iPhone owners either. Again available available to Blackberry and other smartphones offered on AT&T.

Now if existing iPhone 3G owners would like to upgrade to the new iPhone 3GS that was introduced today and is shipping on June 19, they want existing customers in good standard to pay a $200 premium for the honor on top of a $18 upgrade charge plus extend their contract another two years! Even though they also announced that the faster speed of the iPhone 3GS that supports HSDPA up to 7.2 Mbps, will not work yet on AT&T's network as the faster network will not be available to 2011. Again WTF?

This is not only bad for existing customers with iPhone's it is bad business for AT&T and Apple. Older iPhones that get upgraded usually end up back on their network, many times with a NEW customer. Of course Apple wants to sell iPhones, so this practice will not help. For instance, this iPhone 3G owner will not be upgrading if I have to pay $200 + $18 + extend my contract another two years. Cancellation fees usually run about $175. So it seems AT&T wants more from good customers that want to stay!

AT&T is offering $399 for 16 GB or $499 for 32 GB upgrade pricing for some users for the new iPhone 3GS. Some are not even offer this upgrade price. They are expected to pay $599 for the new 16GB, or $699 for the 32GB model. Only new accounts are being offered the advertised $199 and $299 prices. Ouch!

Extending your contract two years brings you into 2012. It is likely that the iPhone will be on Verizon Wireless or another carrier in the U.S. by next year. So think before you decide to upgrade and paying these premium fees to AT&T.
