In a move that is as juvenile as I have ever seen, Palm releases WebOS 1.2.1 update that restores syncing to the Pre with iTunes 9. Why is this juvenile you may ask? Because it does not help Pre customers or follow the policy of the USB-IF, the industry group that has already shot them down for using an USB ID to mimic an iPhone.

Since the Palm Pre can not play back any DRM content like videos sold in the iTunes Store or use any apps sold, there is no reason to do this, but to annoy Apple. Maybe Palm should be working on apps and instead of wasting their time with this. All Palm needs to do is create their OWN desktop syncing software like RIM has for the Blackberry.

Maybe Palm should worry more about all the units it has not sold and the heavy discounts being offered at Wal-Mart for the Pre ($79.99 after rebate). In fact Pre sales have been quite dismal, allowing Verizon Wireless to announce they are no longer interested in selling the Pre.

OK, Apple what's next? Your turn.

Palm was the company that complained to the USB-IF claiming Apple is “hampering competition” by repeatedly disabling the Palm Pre’s ability to sync with iTunes. It amazes me that Palm thought they would win with this strategy. Well it does not look good for Palm.

Just a basic update of the iPod line with better price points, iPhone 3.1 update, and iTunes 9. Pretty boring stuff. I was happy about two things, seeing Steve Jobs is recovering and a few useful features in iTunes 9.

New Home Sharing feature in iTunes 9, allows you to easily transfer content between five authorized computers connected to your iTunes account. No more screwing around with network shares or USB drives. Also finally a better way to manage your iPhone or iPod touch apps directly in iTunes. See videos.

iTunes: About unsupported third-party digital media players [via Apple website dated June 16, 2009].

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

I would consider this Apple's warning shot to Palm!

I have been a fan and user for Simplify Media’s iPhone and desktop clients since the very first version. Now Simplify has taken it up a notch to 2.0 adding some new features.

Simplify Media allows you to stream music from your computers or those of your friends to your iPhone, iPod touch or remote desktop. Users can now search the entire shared music library for artists, albums, and song titles - no matter which machine the track is on that is running the free desktop client (Mac OS X, Windows or Linux). In addition, you can now tag your favorite songs either from your own library or your friends’, create playlists in the iPhone or iPod touch application while you’re on the go, and use the new scrub bar to easily jump around inside podcasts and audio books.

OK one thing to note here is that the desktop clients are STILL FREE, but in order to update the iPhone/iPod touch app, now called Simplify Music 2.0 you must buy it for $2.99 until May 14 (yes even owners of the original version). After May 14, when the price goes up to the $5.99 claims the developer. The 1.0 version of the app, now rebranded “Simplify,” is still available, and currently costs $3.99 and will still work with the new desktop clients.

Note: DRM tracks can not be shared using Simplify Media. Since iTunes is now all DRM-free this is less of an issue.

The class began this week, and will run for 10 weeks (users can also download slides and other course materials from the web site for the course, CS 193P).

The class is being taught by several Apple employees including Evan Doll, a Stanford Computer Science alum who has worked on the iPhone team since version 1.0 was released. And Alan Cannistraro and Paul Marcos have more than twenty years of Apple experience between them and now work on a variety of iPhone applications. Marcos formerly taught other programming courses in the Computer Science department at Stanford.

Apple has brought us iPhone users much needed fixes with Tuesday's arrival of iTunes 8 and today's iPhone 2.1 update. These updates should make much of iPhone users pain go away. Here is what it fixes add changes.

Apple actually gave us some more information than what has become the usual "Bug Fixes" in the updates description. Don't get used to this, but I was happy to see what it was supposed to fix.

This is what Apple claims iPhone 2.1 fixes:
* Decrease in call set-up failures and dropped calls
* Significantly better battery life for most users
* Dramatically reduced time to backup to iTunes
* Improved email reliability, notably fetching email from POP and Exchange accounts
* Faster installation of 3rd party applications
* Fixed bugs causing hangs and crashes for users with lots of third party applications
* Improved performance in text messaging
* Faster loading and searching of contacts
* Improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display
* Repeat alert up to two additional times for incoming text messages
* Option to wipe data after ten failed passcode attempts
* Genius playlist creation

I updated my iPod touch on Tuesday and the iPhone 2.1 this morning and both updates went well. I installed about 95 third party apps along with the 2.1 update on my iPhone 3G. Yes that is a lot.

Broken Apps
What I found so far is that Last.fm and SpeakEasy Voice Dialer are totally broken. I try to delete them and reinstall, but they do not work. Not big deal as I expect the third party developers will need to update their apps. I have tested quickly over 90 plus apps, so far these were the only ones I had problems with on the iPhone 3G.

Here is a list I compiled of what I noticed with this update.

3G and EDGE logo changed

You can now see how much space Apps take up in iTunes 8 on the status bar in the Summary section with the iPhone attached

It seems you can now sync apps with one Mac and Music with another

You can pause the installation of apps by clicking on the icon when installing them directly on the iPhone

When listening to music with your headphones you can click the mic 3 times to go back a track

The camera is now part of the parental settings

New status indicator for videos - Half circle next to partially watched tv shows, podcasts or movies

App icons stay put after an update so you can keep the order you setup

Apps install faster directly on iPhone or with iTunes

Backups and syncs are much faster - took only 4 minutes to backup my iPhone with 95 apps and 5 email accounts

In iPod under songs it now has the name of the album and artist under the song name

Pass code exploit is now fixed. Double tapping the home button does nothing until you enter in your pass code

BIG ONE for me - play visual voice mail audio over Bluetooth headset. I could not get this to work in the past

It might be me, but the speaker volume sounds louder or improved

Genius playlists feature is a killer feature for me. I had hoped for something like this since I made my first playlist on my first iPod

Setting up Genius Playlist:
First you need to turn it on Genius in iTunes 8 and allow it to update and then you must "Sync" your iPhone (after installing 2.1) in order to use the Genius feature. In vertical orientation while playing a song, tap the album art and you will then see the Genius icon appears under the scrubber. Click and you will be given a instant playlist based on the song you choose.

Other than the many bug fixes in 2.1, Genius is probably the biggest new feature. In my opinion this update should have been what shipped on the iPhone when it was launched. While it was obvious that Apple rushed the iPhone 3G to market they have at least making up for it with this release.

Some users will be a bit disappointed as they were looking forward to Apple including a list of desired features. We will have to wait for these in a future update. Stability may end up being the MOST important feature of this update.

I will be testing this update extensively over the next few weeks and will be reporting back here.

What's still missing:
Global Copy Cut Paste
Sync Notes back to computer
Video recording with camera
MMS - sending pics cell phone to cellphone
Flash support in Safari
Stereo Audio over Bluetooth
Voice Recorder with syncing back to iTunes
Turn by turn voice GPS - think Garmin
Landscape mode for texting and mail apps
Call filtering

Still can't get subscribed calendars on the iPhone, but this is more of a MobileMe problem than iPhone.

Update instructions :
http://www.apple.com/iphone/softwareupdate/

iTunes 8
iTunes 8 has fixed what I considered a major bug in iTunes 7.7 where every time you updated an app from the App Store the app file would add a new the file instead of overwriting the old one. You end up with incremented copies of the same app filling your hard drive in the iTunes -> Mobile Applications folder.

iTunes 8 ads a new feature that allows for adjusting podcast settings per podcast now.

Apps that are really for the iPhone will no longer install on the iPod touch.

Their are several changes in Preferences and of course their are the thumbnail and grid view that has been added.

The Good Part
With these updates of the iPhone and iTunes I can finally recommend the iPhone. After the pain of being an early adopter and the constant crashes and some 40 restores I could not in good conscience tell anyone to buy an iPhone.

Well that is all changed now. I can honestly tell you now that the early frustrations seem to be resolved, the iPhone is the best cell phone, iPod, and mobile device I have ever owned. I would like to mention I own a Windows Mobile smartphone, a Blackberry Curve and a Nokia. I have owned Palms and many other mobile devices. The iPhone is the closest thing to having a Mac, iPod and a phone all rolled into one in your pocket.

With its multi-touch user interface, App Store, superior browsing, push email and multi-media capabilities I doubt I could ever go back to a plain smartphone again.

Apple has announced that iPhone and iPod touch users have already downloaded more than 10 million applications this weekend from the new App Store since its launch. More than 800 native applications are now available on the App Store, with more than 200 offered for free and more than 90 percent priced at less than $10.

“The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone and iPod touch user instantly.”

Apple has launched the new App Store. It has been accessible from within the iTunes Store for a few hours now. Still no official release of the iPhone or iPod touch 2.0 firmware as of yet. So you can check out the new mobile apps and purchase them. However, you will have to wait for the software update to run them.

Apparently these launches are not going as smooth as Apple may have expected. The .Mac to MobileMe conversion was supposed be done last night between 6 PM and 12 AM PT. It was pushed back to 8 PM to 2 AM. Except for a few moments today MobileMe and www.me.com has been down and the old .mac site says maintenance is still being done.

The OS X update for MobileMe integration is missing in action so far.

Although the App Store has not officially launched yet, I was able to find and download iPhone/iPod touch apps from the iTunes Store. Check out this iTunes link.

I found the free remote app from Apple under iPhone Applications. It will be able to control iTunes and the Apple TV! There seems to be a lot of apps that will be available for free or reasonable prices with 500 plus applications and 25 percent are free. I already downloaded 14 apps for the iPhone and iPod touch. As soon as you download an app it appears in the new Application section of iTunes as you might expect. I will need the new software 2.0 to use any of them which is expected later today.

Rhapsody has struggled to compete with Apple's domination with iTunes in the past by ignoring the iPod and offering a subscription model that only worked on Windows. This has failed miserably. Now they will try to take on iTunes by embracing the iPod with DRM-free MP3 tracks they will sell at $.99 and most albums for $9.99.

They will be entering an expanding field with eMusic, Amazon and Wal-Mart already selling DRM-free MP3s. Amazon sells MP3s at a discount with most single tracks selling at $.89 and most albums selling at $7.99.

Take Katy Perry's new album One Of The Boys selling on Amazon for $7.99 which is $2 more at Rhapsody. The Katy Perry single I Kissed A Girl is only $.89 at Amazon and $.10 more at Rhapsody.

Rhapsody will also be available on mobile phones through Verizon Wireless VCAST Music service. Any tracks purchased via VCAST (over-the-air) will be able to be downloaded to the users computer at a whopping $1.99 per track.

Apple has the Wi-Fi Music Store where you can buy over-the-air tracks at the same $.99 as with iTunes. Many Starbucks stores are set up to list what's playing in the store for iPhone and iPod touch users for easy purchase.

The Rhapsody MP3 tracks will be compatible with Apple's iPod. Rhapsody vice president Neil Smith said that not being compatible with the iPod had limited Rhapsody's reach. Previously the company had focused on its subscription service, which offered unlimited songs streaming for $13 to $15 a month which is NOT compatible with iPods.

My question is how will Rhapsody make money? Is moving to DRM-free MP3s too little to late? What compelling reason will iPod and iPhone users have to buy MP3s from Rhapsody instead of iTunes? It is not cheaper. With the new App Store opening for business in a about 11 days, iTunes will certainly get stronger for iPhone and iPod touch owners.

Anyway, choice is a good thing and I guess Rhapsody is hoping for the best.

Also see NY Times Bits Blog, Rhapsody Runs Hard Just to Stay in Place for another take.

Napster the name that once ruled the MP3 world, although the illegal one, has watched its fortunes disappear. Napster's stock price is riding at about $1.54, once a high of almost $10 a share. They bet on Windows Media DRM and a subscription model and got clobbered by Apple's iTunes Store and the iPod that their tracks were incompatible with. Now they are hoping that an MP3 store offering 6 million unprotected tracks may revive their sinking fortunes.

Napster is quick to explain that users with iTunes can auto-sync their Napster downloads. So I went over to see if their new store was better than Amazon or competed well with iTunes. As you can see above they seem to not care much for Mac users running Safari. Gee, seems ridiculous. How hard would it be to have your website work with Safari? Amazon's MP3 Store does.

Napster chief executive Chris Gorog said, “Now consumers can use Napster with any device.” Unless of course you are running Safari.

Napster thinks they have an edge over the Amazon MP3 store with 6 million to Amazon's supposed 4.5 million available tracks. I do not think Amazon has much to lose sleep over. Napster's pricing is slightly higher at 99 cents each, with most full albums selling for about $10. While Amazon, who has much higher traffic and name recognition is a bit cheaper at sells most tracks for 89 cents and albums for $8 or less. Neither Napster or Amazon are selling iPod compatible videos.

Napster will not be offering any type of trade program for customers who have a library of DRM-protected WMA files that they purchased a MP3 version as iTunes does.

Napster will continue to offer its online and To Go subscription services for $12.95 or $14.95 per month, respectively. The music associated with a subscription will remain in the protected WMA format with the time-out capability. These services are not compatible with the iPod or iPhone.

HBO content just joined the iTunes family. Tony Soprano and his crew must have had a "sit down" with Steve Jobs as the HBO shows have variable pricing.

Episodes of The Sopranos, Rome and Deadwood are selling for $2.99 while The Wire, Sex and the City and Flight of the Conchords have the iTunes "standard" pricing of $1.99.

While these prices may seem high, in the case of the Sopranos at least, they are still cheaper than what Amazon sells the season on DVD.

The AJAX Remote integrated into Remote Buddy now supports the streaming of all files organized in iTunes, so that they can be played back directly on the iPhone or iPod touch.

With a little tweaking of ports and port forwarding I was easily able to get this working over the Internet instead of just my home network. Listening to your iTunes library at home on your Mac streamed to your iPhone or iPod touch can free you from the storage limitations on these devices.

Once you have remote access set up you can control your Mac remotely from your iPhone or iPod touch, view your Mac's desktop, monitor your home using your Mac's iSight camera and even snap off some pictures.

Apple is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the iTunes Store with a look at back at "all of the great music, video, and exclusives" highlighting the songs and shows that defined each year. On its iTunes store, Apple is offering a brief history along with a collection of "best sellers."

Apple announced earlier this month that the iTunes Store surpassed Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the US based on data from January and February of 2008 from NPD Music Watch.

iTunes accounts for approximately 70 percent of digital music sold worldwide. Wired notes that in the next five years, Apple's media service may well account for a staggering 28 percent of all music sold worldwide.

Seems people have spoken with their wallets to make Apple's iTunes the number 1 music retailer. Based on the latest data from the NPD Group’s Music Watch survey, the iTunes Store surpassed Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the US, Apple has announced. “We launched iTunes less than five years ago, and it has now become the number one music retailer in the world,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s vice president of iTunes. “We are thrilled, and would like to thank all of our customers for helping us reach this incredible milestone.”

Subscriptions never made a dent in the iTunes model. Seems to me Apple CEO was right when he said people want to "own" music. He also said they want to "rent" movies and of course it is too early to tell if he was right on that one also.

The connivence and user experience of the iTunes Store along with the huge popularity of the iPod has paid off. Wonder how Microsoft's Zune is doing these days. I still have never seen a Zune in the wild.

TiVo has introduced a "plus" version TiVo Desktop for Windows software that helps turn its DVR STB into a networked media hubs. This new version stresses the ability to pull podcasts and can either recognize them directly from iTunes on a networked PC or else pulls them directly through RSS subscriptions on the Series 3, including 720p HD podcasts. Customers can also use the Season Pass feature normally used for recorded TV shows to monitor web video sources and add new videos from folders on a local PC without adding them to the list by hand.

The software requires a Windows PC and can still convert recorded TV shows to formats playable by iPods and the PSP. A Mac version of TiVo Desktop that matches these new features is still in development in tandem with Roxio, TiVo says. The DVRs themselves are also still set to receive YouTube support later this year. TiVo Desktop is priced at $24.95 for new users but is a free upgrade to anyone running a previous version. The standard TiVo Desktop for Windows software is a free download with less features.

OK, you ripped a DVD you own using an application like Handbrake or downloaded a video file so you can add it to iTunes and play it on your iPod, iPhone or Apple TV. What you may have realized is the ID3 tagging system in iTunes is a bit limited. In fact it does not allow you to add information for some fields at all such as description and rating. Here is were MetaX comes in. It automatically retrieves tag information from Amazon and Yahoo!

MetaX is a meta-data tagger for MP4 and QuickTime movie files. It uses a modified version of Atomic Parsley at it's core to write the tags. MetaX will automatically search the internet for movie posters and search IMDb for movie and TV show information (Amazon and Yahoo). MetaX can use your iSight camera as a bar scanner to a lot of the work for you. Scan your DVD barcode and MetaX will search for the tags.

Files can be added to your iTunes library automatically after writing tags. Your tag data is automatically archived, and can be exported to share with your friends. MetaX also supports a preset feature so you do not have to add tags for TV shows as you get each episode. MetaX includes a plugin found in preferences that allows you at re-write the tags for movies and TV shows you already have in iTunes.

MetaX can directly write meta data tags to mp4, m4v, m4a, m4b, m4p, and mov files. Other formats such as avi can only be tagged if they are first placed inside a QuickTime mov container. This can be done with QuickTime Pro.

I found the application to work pretty well and be very useful. I did experience some bugs however. The bar scanner did not always work for me. It could not write ever file I asked it to, but this is to be expected since the files I was testing came from various sources. Most times it worked well. I found MetaX better than the other tagging apps I have tried.

MetaX 2.3.5 is available as a free download for Mac OS X Leopard and MetaX 2.3.0 is Tiger compatible. If you find the software helpful make a donation to the developer.

Two other tagging solutions for the Mac are vID Infiltr8 and Lostify.
