Is this the Joost and Hulu killer? I have no idea, but it does look compelling especially since I have a SlingCatcher on pre-order.

The Flash based interface feels quite a lot like the "real" applications.

The "Not" Apple TV interface includes YouTube, Google Video, Pornotube and others. Just like Apple TV, the site is unable to interact or record live TV. Worth a peak. No software to install and no box to buy! How about a SlingPlayer site?

Joost is announcing that it will allow beta testers to invite anyone to use the system."Later this month we will be completely open" and allow anyone to download the Joost software from the company's Web site, said Yvette Alberdingk Thijm, the company's top executive. "This is the way you normally ramp up peer-to-peer software ... and it's a way to give our (beta tester) friends a little bit of a scoop."

While still in late beta, the peer-to-peer TV network is now said to be in full business and is said to have high-profile ads already lined up to appear this month, including segments from Coca-Cola and HP. Over 150 channels are part of the official launch, ranging from cartoons to documentaries and sports.

This makes the beta far more open allowing existing testers now to have unlimited invites, ensuring that almost anyone can try the service through a friend. A new version of the beta is available for existing users and requires a broadband Internet connection as well as either an Intel-based Mac or a PC running Windows XP.
According to ClickZ News, Joost has signed three-month contracts with a group of 31 big brand advertisers, including Procter & Gamble, Coca-Cola, Nike, General Motors and Visa. It will offer these marketers traditional units such as :30 mid-roll spots as well as unique formats, including a small digital overlay ad.

"The foundation is the traditional :30 spot, which we believe is far from dead, served on a mid-roll basis,” said David Clark, Joost's EVP of global advertising. "We're inspired by others who seem to be able to make this work, like ABC for example."

Joost (formally known as the Vienna project) is a free TV service for your computer. The service has a very compelling interface that is way cool offering transparent "widgets" and is truly a new way to watch TV and interact with each other. Joost is more than TV it is an online community with chat, instant messaging, search and more - baked right into the TV experience.

I’ve was lucky enough to have been chosen to participate in the closed Joost beta for a few weeks so far. So now the Joost team just gave me three invites for the Joost private beta. I will be giving one invite to my "other half." The other two are up for grabs. Anyone interested? If so, leave me a comment on this post as to why you think I should give you an invite. I’ll choose two readers from the comments - based on your comments and email the invite to you. Please DO NOT put your email address in the post for all to see. Your email address will be recorded when you leave a comment, so just make sure that the address is valid. I will not be posting anyone's email addresses.

Joost's beta software only runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Intel Macs (so make sure you have one of these and a broadband connection) before requesting an invite. Good luck!

Joost is what I call the "one" to watch. I have applied for an account for the beta testing, but as of yet I have not been invited. Joost, formerly an operation "under wraps" known as "The Venice Project," is the latest product from Janus Friis and Niklas Zennström. They're best known as the creators of peer-to-peer file-sharing software Kazaa and Skype, which was acquired by eBay in 2005. Joost is currently in a limited private beta test, compatible only with Windows at first and recently expanded to Intel-based Macintosh computers. Hey Joost guys, I am still waiting for my invite!

The downloadable Joost software, works on a peer-2-peer model similar to Kazaa, featuring a slick, television-like console and aims to offer high-quality, professional video content supported by an advertising revenue model. Full screen, high quality TV-like viewing is possible with on-screen widgets and information. Sounds like a very cool IPTV solution that may prove to be very popular once opened up to more people provided Joost can make more content deals like the Viacom one announced today.
