Anxiety is a free super-lightweight To-do list application for Mac OS X Leopard that synchronizes with iCal and Mail. It provide a streamlined, easily accessible interface from your menu-bar or Dock where you can add and check off your tasks for your To-do list. Double-clicking a list item reveals the task in iCal or Mail for extended editing.

Anxiety utilizes Leopard's Calendar Store — a new system-wide database that contains your calendars, events and to-dos — to remain in sync with iCal and Mail. Add, remove, or check off a task in either Anxiety or one of these apps, and the changes will be reflected in the others. Syncing across Macs is also automatically done for those who are using .Mac.

When clicking on the menu-bar icon, Anxiety will launch a simple, semi-transparent window, containing a list of tasks, that floats over all other windows. (or be visible only when Anxiety is the frontmost program). Now just click on the checkbox button to add a new task or check the box next to a task to mark it as completed and remove it from the list. Anxiety’s list is automatically synchronized with the To Do lists in Leopard’s iCal and Mail programs. You can choose the calendar to which a new task will be synced when creating the task.

You can decide to show Anxiety in the menu-bar, the Dock, or both when running in the background. Anxiety's strong point is its integration with OS X Leopard's own built-in to-do-list features in iCal and Mail. It is not a full featured To-do list and I think this is a plus for many users who are just looking for an easier way to use Leopard's already built-in features.

Anxiety is Leopard only and a free download. I am now using Anxiety to replace MenuCalendarClock for iCal, $19.95 as the developer required a new full priced to get a Leopard compatible version since I mainly used it for the To-do list anyways.

If you are like me and are always trying to organize your life and stop forgetting stuff, I highly recommend Anxiety as a simple add-on that might make a difference in your busy life. You can not beat the price.

Anxiety is awarded 4 out of 5 Paws< .p>

On all of these machines, I was able to speedily access the Internet via Time Capsule. Time Capsule can be set up to either replace or supplement your existing Wi-Fi router.
Vara Software the company that makes Wirecast and Videocue now adds ScreenFlow, $99.99 a new screencasting software package for Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard. ScreenFlow features screen, camera, and audio capture systems alongside advanced timeline-based editing features.

Users can mix down a screencast with effects like 3D or 2D zoom and pan, mouse callouts, foreground window callouts, picture-in-picture, reflection, drop shadow, and more.

ScreenFlow captures everything on screen and can simultaneously record with an iSight, DV or other QuickTime-compatible USB camera as well as any attached microphone. The application includes a custom system extension that allows seamless simultaneous capture of all computer audio.

Vara's screencasting software features a proprietary GPU-enhanced export scaling system to produce legible output even at high scaling factors, and can change the size of the mouse pointer or show a radar effect each time the mouse is clicked.

The Mouse Callout feature, meanwhile, highlights the area just around the mouse by dimming other areas on screen, and optionally zooming up the area just around the mouse.

Vara offers a free evaluate version of ScreenFlow [download link] where exported QuickTime movies will be watermarked but the application will be fully functional. With a $99.99 price it does look to break the bank.

Mac users have not had the availability of top of the line screen capture apps like Adobe Captivate or TechSmith's Camtasia Studio as they are Windows only. Although, TechSmith has informed me that they are working on an OS X port of Camtasia, but have no release date as of yet. They have included Mac users in the Jing Project that is a bit like Skitch.

There are many useful shareware apps for OS X that allow for screen capture like iShowU, Snapz Pro X, Screenium, Screenography and others, but these are not full featured apps for creating training videos. You usually need several apps to accomplish this task. ScreenFlow looks like a nice app I will soon take for a spin. I have some projects for this.

Update: I downloaded the demo and so far I think ScreenFlow offers much of what Camtasia offers on Windows. Missing in ScreenFlow is captions, quiz & surveys, some audio enhancments, but this is only a version 1 app and looks great.

Apple has released a huge update to Leopard with loads of fixes. Three fixes that Apple has included in the 10.5.2 update shows that Apple is "listening" to its users. These changes to Leopard should make many Mac users happy.

Transparent menu bar - Now optional
After the 10.5.2 update getting rid of the transparent menu-bar is a snap. Just go to System Preferences -> Desktop & Screen Saver preference pane and uncheck the new Translucent Menu Bar checkbox. Instantly, you get a subtle grey bar that is a not the bright white one in Tiger, I like the new one better.

Time Machine Gets a Menu-bar Indicator
Before this update it was hard to tell when a Time Machine backup was happening. Anytime you want to do anything with Time Machine it meant a trip to the System Preferences -> Time Machine pane or leave Time Machine in your Dock. Well Apple has added a menu-bar indicator which you can toggle on or off in the Time Machine preference pane,. This new menu provides the most important information users want to know about their backups, as well as quick access to the most-frequently-used Time Machine commands. Not only saving trips to System Preferences, it lets you to free up some space in the Dock by removing Time Machine icon.

Good job Apple, I am glad you are listening.

Apple has just released Mac OS X 10.5.2 update, recommended for all users running Mac OS X Leopard and includes "general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility and security of your Mac." The 180MB update, available via Software Update, brings AirPort networking fixes, better Back to My Mac support, Dashboard performance improvements, iCal and iChat improvements, Finder and Mail fixes, Parental Control and printing fixes, and Time machine fixes.

This is a huge update with lots of fixes (detailed after the jump). Backing up is highly recommended before proceeding with the 10.5.2 update as always before an update. I have already updated three of my Macs without issues, but your mileage may vary. To update just run your Mac's Software Update or get the standalone update from Apple. After installing 10.5.2, users are encouraged to download the Leopard Graphics Update 1.0.
Apple has issued updates for iPhoto, ProKit, and Braille Display. iPhoto 7.1.2 addresses issues when publishing photos to a .Mac Web Gallery, improves overall stability, and fixes several other minor issues, according to Apple. The issue could arise when users subscribe to a maliciously crafted photocast, which may lead to arbitrary code execution.

ProKit 4.5 improves reliability for Apple's professional applications, according to the company, and is recommended for all users of Final Cut Studio, Final Cut Express, Aperture, Logic Studio, and Logic Express.

Panic the makers of two of my most used Mac apps Transmit and Coda have brought Mac users CandyBar 3. CandyBar 3 - $29 (free 15-day/250-icon limit trial) is new for Leopard and allows for easy customization of your Mac's icons and Dock. The new version has a new interface and now has the "pixadex" built right into the application taping the power of Leopard's Quick Look feature.

Existing Boot Camp beta participants can keep their Windows partitions, but the software that manages installations will be deactivated, and Apple will no longer provide updates, requiring users to upgrade to Leopard if they wish to add to or modify the Boot Camp partition.

Apple has released an important update to the latest release of OS X. Leopard 10.5.1 brings lots of fixes and bug squashes. I am hopeful it will fix an iDisk Sync problem I found on my new iMac just today where a bug in Leopard filled my entire 500 GB hard drive.

This Leopard update is recommended for all users bringing more than a dozen fixes for AirPort, Back to My Mac, Disk Utilities, iCal, Mail, Networking, Printing, Security/Firewall, System and Finder, and Time Machine. The update is available via the Apple website [110MB] or by simply firing up Software Update located under the Apple menu.

Fixes in 10.5.1 include:

Back to My Mac - Improves the reliability of Back to My Mac-enabled Macs appearing in the Finder's Shared Sidebar. Improves compatibility with D-Link NAT gateways.

Disk utilities - Restores the functionality of the progress bar during permission repairs in Disk Utility. Addresses an issue that could produce an alert when creating disk images using Disk Utility or Terminal. Improves disk partitioning when multiple RAID sets are created on the same disk.

iCal - iCal alarms are now more reliably delivered via email. Resolves an issue when inviting attendees via a CalDAV account.

Mail - Improves stability when resizing columns in the message viewer or switching between Stationery templates in email messages. Addresses an issue in which attachments enclosed inside an HTML link may not be clickable in email messages. Fixes an issue with email accounts added using the "Simple Setup" feature in which messages cannot be sent due to an SMTP connection failure. Improves Smart Mailboxes compatibility with .Mac Sync, and addresses an issue with To Do's disappearing when using Smart Mailboxes. Resolves an issue with syncing Mail accounts with .Mac in which multiple On My Mac folders appear in the Mailbox pane.

Networking - Addresses an issue in which Microsoft Windows shared folders may be read-only when connected via SMB.

Printing - Resolves an issue in which user-selected values on Paper Feed PDE are reset to default while saving a custom preset.

Security, Firewall - Addresses a code signing issue; third-party applications can now run when included in the Application Firewall or when whitelisted in Parental Controls. In Security preferences' Firewall tab, the "Block All" option is now called "Allow Only essential services" Includes recent Apple security updates.

System and Finder - Addresses a potential data loss issue when moving files across partitions in the Finder. Resolves an issue with login after turning off FileVault for a specific user account. Improves compatibility with Adobe Flash-based uploaders used by .Mac Web Gallery and certain other websites and applications. Resolves a potential text drawing issue with certain Adobe Flash-based websites and applications.

Time Machine - Addresses formatting issues with certain drives used with Time Machine (specifically, single-partition MBR drives greater than 512 GB in size as well as NTFS drives of any size and partition scheme). Resolves an issue in which files restored in Time Machine may be restored to the backup hierarchy rather than the folders to which they belong.

VMware released Fusion 1.1, a major update of its virtualization software for Mac OS X. This release includes support for Leopard hosts, improved 3D graphics with experimental support for DirectX 9.0, Unity improvements, support for Microsoft Vista Boot Camp partitions as virtual machines, improved 2D drawing performance, especially on Santa Rosa MacBook Pros, and more. VMware Fusion is $79.99 for Mac OS X 10.4.9 and up on an Intel-based Mac. Update is free to registered users. I installed this this morning on my MacBook Pro and had no issues.

VMware has also released Importer (beta) that allows for easy imports of Parallels Desktop virtual machines for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows Server 2003 and Windows Vista.

If you want to convert your existing Windows PC to a virtual machine to run with VMware Fusion you can use the free VMware Converter Starter Edition. This will transform your Windows PC into a VMware Fusion compatible virtual machine, then copy the virtual machine from your PC to your Mac.

When Apple released Numbers as part of iWork '08 and killed off support for AppleWorks at relatively the same time. I wondered where is the database? Sure FileMaker is easy enough to use, but is a bit overkill for many home users. Well let's welcome Bento from well, FileMaker.

Use it to organize all your important information in one place so you can manage your contacts, coordinate events, track projects, and so much more – faster and easier than ever before, says FileMaker.

Bento is Leopard only as takes advantage of many of its new features of Leopard, including live linking to iCal data, core animation, advanced find, Time Machine backups, and multimedia features. Bento will cost $49 for a single-user license, with a $99 family 5-pack option. You can download the free preview here.

I have seen several Windows centric websites that are making all sorts of ridiculous claims of Apple's new OS X 10.5 Leopard "copying" Windows Vista. I find this all amusing. Maybe these Windows zealots have little experience with a Mac and actually believe this.

David Pogue poking fun a Vista copying OS X Tiger last year.

As there is no doubt all developers take ideas from each other (and that also includes Linux). Stealing is a strong word. What I find really funny is that these Windows ONLY guys are pointing to some features Macs have had for years and years before Vista was even thought of.

In some cases they make quite the "stretch" that Leopard features like Time Machine, Spaces, Widgets, Calendar (iCal), iPhoto, iChat and Expose are Windows rip-offs, all while Vista actually lacks these same features or that OS X has had them for years in previous versions.

I understand some feel slighted that Vista has been such a disaster release of Windows. But please relax, take a breath guys. Vista will get fixed eventually.

With Leopard's built-in Boot Camp and the fantastic virtualization solutions available to Mac users like VMware Fusion and Parallels, Mac users can easily test out the newest Windows OS without any fuss to see just how great you guys say it is.

I challenge you to just go buy a Mac and run Windows on it if you like as your main operating system so you can make the same comparison. This will not be a bad decision for you, as Apple's hardware is not only very cool in design, it also runs Windows flawlessly!

Maybe than you guys would finally get the facts straight and maybe even realize you were on the wrong OS.

Mac users today do not have to choose which OS, we can run most all of them, right on the same hardware, and even at the same time if they want to. I personally run Windows Vista, Windows XP, and Ubuntu Linux on my MacBook Pro. I can experience all the most popular OSes this way and run anything I need to. I can than also see what OS is actually best for me. Maybe trying OS X for awhile would be a great way to actually make intelligent comparisons.nux on my MacBook Pro.

Mac OS X Leopard Overview New Features

I am very excited about the new Mac! No not a new iMac or MacBook Pro, although I did purchase one of each this weekend. What I am referring to is the new Mac you get by simply paying for Leopard ($109 with free shipping through this website). I updated to Leopard, added VMware Fusion to my Intel Macs and I can tell you this will change the way I work forever.

Leopard's new Finder, Quick Look Feature, improved iChat, and the new virtual desktops Apple has added called Spaces along with VMware Fusion $64.99, I can now run Windows and Linux (most any flavor) at full speed all on the same machine greatly improving my productivity. I can now use Spaces to have Windows running full screen and with a quick Control + right arrow key I am back to my Leopard desktop. Or I can run Windows in what VMware calls Unity mode, where you can run Windows applications as if they were OS X apps.

But it is Leopard I am most impressed with. Apple claims over 300+ new features. Here are some videos to highlight just a few. Thanks to a reader Victor for sending me some links to some of these videos as it saved me time.

Mac OS X Leopard - new Quick Look

One of my most favorite new features is Quick Look as it will save me countless time. Quick Look can instantly preview almost any file on your Mac without opening any applications. It also pairs nicely with Cover Flow in the new Finder and in iChat.

Mac OS X Leopard - New Finder

The new Finder of the Mac OS X Leopard imports the Cover Flow function from iTunes. This works in conjunction with another great feature that finds its way into Leopard called Quick Look that allows to view basically any file immediately without launching any applications.

Mac OS X Leopard - New iChat

The new iChat allows for screen sharing, great for assisting your parents with their new Mac from miles away. But it is iChat Theatre that I likes the most as with the assist of Quick Look you can show particpants in a video chat your pictures (even slideshows), movies, or any other file you probably have. Also fun with visual backdrops and Photo Booth effects. Improved collaboration is the main word here.

Mac OS X Leopard - Improved Mail

I have never been a big fan of Apple Mail. Leopard has changed much of this for me. Lots of improvements.

Mac OS X Leopard - New Time Machine

Just wait until you see Leopard's new Time Machine the coolest back-up system on the planet. Just add an external drive in Time Machine will be backing up your Mac's data in minutes. The UI is awesome.

Mac OS X Leopard - Spaces

As a long time Linux user, I always loved the virtual desktops that were built-in. Apple has taken this concept to a new level here. Spaces, even more than Expose can change the way you use your Mac. I have been using VMware Fusion to run Windows XP (as I have to sometimes) in full screen and use Spaces to switch to another desktop, or Space to get very quickly to my OS X Finder in literally less than a second.

Basically, if you can spare the the small change and fell it is time for a new Mac Leopard is a great upgrade. If you purchase Leopard from this link you will also support ReelSmart and save yourself some cash as Amazon is selling Leopard for only $109 with free shipping.

Some users have experienced some problems installing Leopard as an "Upgrade" install on existing machines. I recommended a "Clean Install" or at least an "Archive and Install" for Leopard in my Preparing Your Mac for the Big Leopard Install post a few days ago. No major upgrade should really ever be performed without first backing up your data.

Some users found that after completing an "Upgrade" Leoprad installation on their existing Macs, a “blue screen” appeared for an “extended period of time.” after restarting their computer. Apple has blamed “third-party ‘enhancement’ software installed that does not play nice with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard.” Apple has posted a document providing some possible solutions.

I have installed Leopard on two new Intel iMacs, one new MacBook Pro and one older PowerBook G4 with any problems. I used the provided Apple "CPU Leopard Install" disc provided with the new machines and used the store bought Leopard OS 10.5 disc on the PowerBook.

My recommendation is ALWAYS back-up or better yet "clone" you machine before installing any major OS release or update. Then, you have the back-up to revert to in case of a problem.

Apple recommends two possible solutions for the "blue screen" problem if you were so unfortunate to get.

Solution 1: Reinstall Leopard (recommended)
It may be necessary to perform an Archive and Install installation of Leopard. Archive and Install moves your existing Mac OS X system files to a folder named Previous System, and then installs a new copy of Mac OS X on the selected volume. Mac OS X–installed applications, such as Address Book and Safari, are archived, and new versions are installed in the Applications folder. Applications, plug-ins, and other software may have to be reinstalled after an "Archive and Install." This is covered on page 7 of the Install & Setup Guide included on the Leopard DVD.

You will probably want to check "Preserve user and network settings" when starting the installation.

Note: After installation, verify each third-party software product is compatible with Leopard before reinstalling it, especially any application "enhancement" software.

Solution 2: Use the command line (advanced) to remove application enhancement software
Try this solution if you are comfortable using Terminal and have certain application enhancement installed. The software may be removed following the below steps:

Start up in single-user mode by holding Command-S after restarting the computer.

Execute these commands, each on a single line instead.

/sbin/fsck -fy /
/sbin/mount -uw /

Execute these commands, each on a single line. Important: Type each command carefully, misuse of the rm command may damage other files.

rm -rf /Library/PreferencePanes/Application\ Enhancer.prefpane
rm -rf /Library/Frameworks/ApplicationEnhancer.framework
rm -rf /System/Library/SystemConfiguration/ApplicationEnhancer.bundle
rm -rf /Library/Preferences/com.unsanity.ape.plist

Restart normally.

If the issue persists, use solution 1 above instead.

FileMaker, an Apple subsidiary announced that November 19 is their target date for delivering Leopard-compatible versions of FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced. The company also provided details of the current issues that exist for FileMaker 9 on Leopard, revealed that FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced do not deploy properly on Leopard, and said that it has not tested earlier FileMaker versions on Leopard and does not intend to issue updates for them.

Here are the known issues with FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced:

• The Instant Web Publishing feature does not work.
• On Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5), each language version of FileMaker Pro 9 and FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced works only when the Mac OS System Preference "International Formats Region" is set to a specific region. For example, the English language version of FileMaker works only when the region is United States. It does not work when the region is United Kingdom, or Australia, or France, or any other region. Click here for more information.
• FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced currently do not deploy properly on Leopard. We are working on Leopard compatibility updates for FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced but do not have an estimated availability date at this time.
Leopard hits Apple retail tomorrow night and in my opinion is a worthy upgrade. I have been running Leopard Preview for sometime and although, I have not played with the final version yet I like it a lot. For many users upgrading to Leopard on their existing machines should not be that hard. I do not anticipate anywhere near the problems poor Windows users have trying to move to Windows Vista (many have returned to XP). There should be few driver issues and most application software will work with some needed updates.

I have been asked by several readers, friends and clients for some suggestions and guidance for performing the upgrade. So here we go.

First make sure your Mac is capable of running OS X 10.5 Leopard. Apple says Leopard requires:

Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or PowerPC G4 (867MHz or faster) processor

512MB of memory

DVD drive for installation

9GB of available disk space

Some features require a compatible Internet service provider; fees may apply.

Some features require Apple's .Mac service; fees apply.

Time Machine, the new back-up feature in Leopard requires an additional hard drive (either internal or external).

Photo Booth requires an iSight camera (built-in or external), USB video class (UVC) camera, or FireWire DV camcorder; and an Intel or PowerPC G5 processor. Backdrop effects require an Intel Core Duo or faster processor. Backdrop effects when using a DV camcorder require fixed focus, exposure, and white balance.

Boot Camp requires a Mac with an Intel processor and Windows XP Service Pack 2 or Windows Vista (sold separately).

Screen sharing in iChat and in the Finder requires a 128-Kbps Internet connection (300-Kbps recommended).

Front Row requires a Mac with built-in IR and an Apple Remote.

DVD Player requires a 1.6GHz processor or faster for improved de-interlacing.

iChat requires a microphone and a 56-Kbps Internet connection for Audio chats, Video chats require an iSight camera (built-in or external), USB video class (UVC) camera, or FireWire DV camcorder; and 128-Kbps upstream and downstream Internet connection.

Here are some more things to consider before you make the plunge:

Professional users, I would do not install Leopard on your "production" machine, first perform a test on a similar configuration, wait for couple of days as users with variable peripherals, plug-ins and installations will report bugs and problems. This way you do not screw around with your livelihood just yet.

If you rely on compatibility with some specific peripherals, printers, scanners, etc., as above perform a test on a similar hardware to ensure a total support, as some Leopard-compatible drivers will only become available from third-parties after Leopard is officially released.

If you rely on compatibility with some specific third-party applications (not made by Apple) make sure to check with those developers to see if their software is Leopard ready.

FileMaker Pro is NOT yet Leopard compatible.

Classic Mode is not supported at all in Leopard. If you need to use Classic/OS9 apps you must update these apps for Leopard.

Some utilities or system optimizing add-ons might not be yet compatible with OS X 10.5 Leopard. So you may need to live without them if they are not.

OK, now that I got the warnings out of the way let's prepare for a Leopard install providing you are alright with all the points above.

What Do You Need
Well you will need to have OS X Leopard. If you do not want to stand in line and would like to receive a discount consider buying OS 10.5 Leopard from Amazon at $109 (with free shipping) from this link and support ReelSmart at the same time. If you just have to have it on launch night I understand. If you intend to set up Time Machine you will also need an additional hard drive at lease as large as your the hard drive you plan on installing Leopard on.

It is a fantastic idea to back-up your Mac before installing Leopard. Cloning your Mac using an external (or an additional internal HD, if you own a Mac Pro) using either SuperDuper (free for cloning, $27.95 to unlock scheduling and other advanced features) or Carbon Copy Cloner (donationware). You will want to "clone" your entire Macintosh HD by connecting an external hard drive (usually Firewire or USB) and using the software I recommended. See OS X Tip #20: Clone Your Mac and Never Lose a Thing for some more info. If all goes bad, you can always boot your Mac with this clone and even clone it back to your original hard drive.

Before installing Leopard on your Mac it is a good idea to repair all disk permissions on your HD and volumes using the OS X Disk Utility applications located in Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility. See OS X Tip #61: Repairing Disk Permissions for more info.

Now for the install. Make sure you have the time to do this. It may take you a few hours to install Leopard and move your files and applications.

OS X Installation Choices
There are three methods to install Leopard. The default method is an "Upgrade" install if a previous version of OS X is already present on your hard drive. This is the easiest method with the least amount of choices as you will not have to configure a lot of settings afterwards. But, if your Mac has been having some issues with your currently-installed version of Mac OS X, you might benefit more from doing an Archive and Install installation described below as using the "Upgrade" (default) method may not resolve those issues.

An "Archive and Install" moves existing System files to a folder name ‘Previous System (the archive part) then installs a new copy of Mac OS X. Preserve Users and Network Settings option that is selected by default will import existing user accounts, their Home folders, and your network settings into the new system after installation. If you deselect this, you will want to make sure you have a current back-up of you data, network settings, and user Home folders available (that is what the clone was for).

I suggest you perform a "clean install" also called "Erase and Install" if at all possible. This is the best way to insure a perfect installation of Leopard without picking up any of your Mac's possible previous problems. This method completely erases the destination volume, then installs a new copy of Leopard (make sure you have your data backed up) and your Mac will much like it came from the store. This is the fastest way to install Leopard, but it may take some time to set up your computer after installation adding each one of your software applications (after checking for Leopard compatibility) one at a time. This is better that an "upgrade" install or the "archive and install" method to insure a "fresh install" of Leopard and the method I will use.

You have to configure all of your computer settings, install your third-party and iLife applications, and restore your personal files from the backup you made on the clone I asked you to maker.

Add Your Applications, Settings, and Files
You have options for moving your applications and files (for clean installs). The best way is to load each application with Leopard updates as described by the developer for each of your software applications. Manually add each setting and connect the hard drive you cloned. You can drag your data over to the new location on your new Leopard powered Mac. Although, this is time consuming it is the best method. If absolutely, insist you can use the built-in OS X Migration Assistant application. See OS X Tip #92: Moving Your Stuff to Your New Mac.

Time Machine
If you plan on using Leopard's new Time Machine feature you will need an external hard drive at least as large as the hard drive you have Leopard installed on. You may be prompted to connect the external hard drive and set up Time Machine depending of the type of install you performed.

Leopard's Time Machine feature saves serial backups of your computer so you can restore files and applications lost from a user-friendly interface that allows you to look into the past backups and pull out whatever is needed. Apple has done a nice job of taking the "geeky-ness" out of backing up your Mac.

You can set up Time Machine in Leopard by connecting the external hard drive and launching Time Machine from the Dock or Application folder. Now just switch on Time Machine and follow its instructions that will ask you to identify the hard drive you want to use. Generally this works well for desktop machines with the back up HD directly attached via Firewire.

Time Machine Does Not Clone
Remember that SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner app I told you to use? You may just find these still very useful as Time Machine back-ups are generally not bootable until they are restored. Time Machine can restore a full system requiring you to actually start up from the OS 10.5 Leopard DVD and spend the time to restore the back up in full. This requires a working, entirely separate destination device. Since Time Machine does not create a bootable clone of your system, and in cases of catastrophic drive failure, a bootable clone would be the fastest way to get your system up and running in seconds.

If this is what you need, say if you are a pro user, than still making "clones" with SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner may still be quite worth it. I suggest using Time Machine for its strength or incremental back ups and fast retrieval and using SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner on a separate hard drive at intervals of once a week or month for full disaster recovery. This is my plan.

FileMaker Software and Mac OS X Leopard
We are very excited about the release of Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5). We are currently working on Leopard compatibility updates for FileMaker Pro 9, FileMaker Pro 9 Advanced, FileMaker Server 9 and FileMaker Server 9 Advanced. At this time FileMaker does not recommend the use of FileMaker 9 products on computers running Mac OS X Leopard.
If you would like to be notified when these updates become available, please subscribe to FileMaker News.
We also do not recommend the use of earlier versions of FileMaker software on Mac OS X Leopard as we have not performed compatibility testing.

See what the early reviewers think of Apple's new OS 10.5 Leopard $129 being launched on Friday at 6PM. Get Leopard for as low as $109 with free shipping [Amazon link] and support ReelSmart.

Walt Mossberg from the Wall Street Journal:
Uncle Walt says "Evolutionary, not revolutionary... I think it's better than Vista."

Walt Mossberg continued:
Faster, Easier than Vista. Mr. Mossberg took the time to go through scores of features and even do some startup timing tests with a Vaio with the Mac coming out well ahead. He also noted a couple of neat features, such as Google Talk support in iChat and instant access to shared folders on Windows machines.

"Every piece of software and hardware I tried on two Leopard-equipped Macs — a loaned laptop from Apple and my own upgraded iMac — worked fine, exhibiting none of the compatibility problems that continue to plague Vista. My old Hewlett-Packard inkjet printer, for which Vista lacks the proper software, worked instantly in Leopard, even over the network. And, unlike with Vista, it was able to print on both sides of the page. I popped my old Verizon cellphone modem card into the test Leopard laptop and it worked, too, with no software installation or tweaking."

Edward Baig at USAToday:
"Apple's operating system widens its lead aesthetically and technologically... Leopard is one cool cat." Baig gives a pretty comprehensive rundown on new Leopard features and notes some hiccups with Back to my Mac vs. network firewalls. "Leopard, Apple's new Mac operating system, hits all the right spots."

David Pogue from the New York Times:
"Leopard is powerful, polished and carefully conceived. Happy surprises, and very few disappointments, lie around every corner. This Leopard has more than 300 new spots — and most of them are bright ones."

MIT Technology Review:
"MacOS 10.5 offers easy file recovery, effective parental controls, and a host of clever, smaller features.[Leopard is] worth the money if you value having a computer that's fast and easy to use more than you value ... But people who are thriftier than I would probably do better to hold off on this update."

Steven Levy at NewsWeek:
See video.

Claudine Beaumont writing for the Telegraph:
“Leopard is slick, shiny” and offers any number of features that deliver the “wow factor.” Like CoverFlow, which in Leopard allows “you to whiz through files and documents, with the album covers replaced by mini-thumbnails showing the front page of documents. You can hover over these thumbnails to scroll through multi-page documents; if it’s a movie file, you can even play the film clip in Finder.” Stacks “another useful addition to Leopard, is a virtual ‘stack’ of documents that lives in the dock area, giving you one-click access to files.” “For me,” Beaumont states, “the stand-out feature is Time Machine,” but she’s also impressed that with Boot Camp built-in, Leopard becomes “the first Apple operating system that will also allow you to install a Windows operating system alongside it.”
