Thought you were going to buy that iPhone right after Christmas? Well not from the AT&T website if your zip code is located in some places in NY or NJ.

An online AT&T rep claims that the iPhone is not being sold to New Yorkers (and some New Jersey zip codes) via their website, although it remains available via the Apple store website and via both Apple and AT&T physical stores.

Some blogs claim it is because of network congestion, but that would be odd since it is available in a store for use in NY/NJ. Their are some reports of online fraud. I guess we will have to wait for an official statement.

Funny how many Crackberry addicts claimed it wasn't needed. Some even claimed it couldn't be added to a CDMA phone. Maybe now I could consider upgrading my Blackberry Curve when this arrives.
9to5Mac has an interesting post, called Microsoft tries to get iPhone developers to port their apps to Windows Mobile that suggests that Microsoft may be trying to capitalize on the recent App Store rejections and removals.

Seems the folks in Redmond have put together a case study on porting iPhone Apps to Windows Mobile in hopes of attracting the developers who have flocked to the iPhone. There was a time not so long ago when Microsoft boosted of the 18,000 apps available for all the collective models of its Mobile OS. Nowadays, Apple has long surpassed them with over 65,000 iPhone apps and 1.5 Billion downloads.

Apple may end up alienating enough developers with its ever changing rules, closed system and very unpopular removals and rejections of innovative apps to give Microsoft an opening. Microsoft is doing what all the mobile platforms like RIM, Nokia and Palm will all be doing trying to attract developers.

This is why it makes little sense for Apple to treat developers so poorly and allow innovative apps to remain off the iPhone slowing its momentum. While they are available on competing platforms in many cases even on the same carrier.

You knew this was coming. Based on "the Kindle Ate My Homework," a 17-year-old Michigan high school senior is suing Amazon over George Orwell’s “Nineteen Eighty-Four” being deleted from his Kindle. The student bought the book and claimed to have made notes for his class before the ebook was removed from his device without his permission.

The suit, which cites another plaintiff who also lost his copy of the Orwell classic, seeks to prevent Amazon from ever again deleting books from Kindles. It also seeks monetary relief for people who lost work from the incident.

So far Amazon has declined comment on the suit. The company, which refunded the purchase price of Orwell books to people whose copies it deleted, has already said it would not do it again. The company’s CEO Jeff Bezos has already apologized for the incident, calling it “stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles.”

I guess Amazon brought this on themselves. No matter what the outcome of the lawsuit, Amazon will have to take the bad PR on the chin.

iTunes: About unsupported third-party digital media players [via Apple website dated June 16, 2009].

Apple designs the hardware and software to provide seamless integration of the iPhone and iPod with iTunes, the iTunes Store, and tens of thousands of apps on the App Store. Apple is aware that some third-parties claim that their digital media players are able to sync with Apple software. However, Apple does not provide support for, or test for compatibility with, non-Apple digital media players and, because software changes over time, newer versions of Apple's iTunes software may no longer provide syncing functionality with non-Apple digital media players.

I would consider this Apple's warning shot to Palm!

Leo Laporte calls Mike Arrington (TechCrunch) an asshole on the Gillmor Gang - June 6, 2009. Totally called for in my opinion. Leo is one the most honorable guys out there and is NOT in anyone's pocket. Arrington, known as a troll, suggests Leo ONLY likes the Palm Pre because he received a "one week" review unit! Ridiculous on "asshole" Arrington's part to suggest a test unit for one week would influence a guy like Leo. I have never seen Leo more angry, even dropping an "F" bomb. I don't blame him however.

Arrington for years claims he constant assertions that he gets never-ending death threats. Why? For what? I have long called him the Art Bell of tech bloggers.

Arrington offered a backhanded apology on his blog and Leo being a gentlemen has accepted it. See video.

AT&T has decided to tweak the terms of service for its wireless users taking aggressive steps to manage network traffic. These changes forbid streaming, filesharing and data tethering. This could effect currently available apps already installed on many iPhones.

iPhone owners already a bit upset with Sling's move yesterday that looks like forced upgrades and now wondering about SlingPlayer Mobile which was expected to launch anytime now in the App Store.

As the Public Knowledge Policy Blog points out, the AT&T Wireless terms of service now explicitly prohibit “downloading movies using P2P file sharing services, customer initiated redirection of television or other video or audio signals via any technology from a fixed location to a mobile device, web broadcasting, and/or for the operation of servers, telemetry devices and/or Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition devices.”

Sling Media spokesperson Jay Tannenbaum has commented via email to NewTeeVee, “Even with high quality of the stream that we provide we have never really encountered any complaints about exceeding the 5gig cap. What we strive to do is offer the best quality while shielding the user from carrier bandwidth constraints.”

AT&T has announced that they will offer subsidized netbooks as part of Internet at Home and On the Go, that will have built-in 3G wireless capabilities. It seems this change in the TOS was timely due to this netbook announcement.

So this one should be fun to watch as it develops!

After watching Apple's enormous success with the iTunes App Store with the iPhone and iPod touch, Research in Motion today unveiled its own similar store, called BlackBerry App World.

I downloaded the App World app to my BlackBerry Curve and assisted a co-worker to add it to his BlackBerry Storm. With mixed results we got it installed on both.

The first two attempts to install App World on my Curve failed with an error message telling me my BlackBerry did not meet the minimum system requirements. Only thing is my BlackBerry Curve does meet the minimum system requirements as it runs 4.3. The third time was the charm in my case, as it worked and the App World app installed.

System Requirements
To ensure that your BlackBerry® smartphone will support BlackBerry App World™, it must have the following system requirements:

BlackBerry® Device Software version 4.2 or higher

BlackBerry smartphones with trackballs or SurePress™ touch screen

BlackBerry App World is only available to customers in US, Canada and UK and may not be available on all networks

To use BlackBerry App World, you require a service plan that includes access to the BlackBerry® Browser

How to check your operating system from your BlackBerry smartphone:

Click "Options" from your BlackBerry smartphone

Select “About”, then click. Your BlackBerry smartphone operating system information will be displayed

Installing it on the Storm was a little easier. But after downloading and installing it, instead of showing up in Applications, it ended up installed in Downloads. Not intuitive or logical. To install it on your BlackBerry point your Blackberry browser to www.blackberry.com/appworld/download.

In my opinion, RIM's App World store is adequate, but not as slick as Apple's App Store. I hate to compare these two stores, but since RIM has copied the concept from Apple it is inevitable that they will be compared. RIM's store allows for Blackberry owners to discover and more easier purchase and install apps on their mobile device. It makes me wonder how many BlackBerries in the wild there are that no not have a single app installed that did not come with the unit.

App World is only available for relatively recent BlackBerry models–the ones with trackballs and the Storm. Side wheels BlackBerry owners are out of luck. Apps are organized in categories and RIM promises about 1,000 apps within the first few weeks (not all apps will work on all BlackBerry models however).

You will need a PayPal account to purchase apps. Pricing seems a bit limiting as there are free apps, but the cheapest apps for purchase is $2.99 and up. There are no apps that will sell for less than this. This is triple the price on many apps that Apple's App Store sells. There are a surprising number of $20, $30 and $40 apps on App World. So if you are used to pricing from Apple's store, be prepared to spend more for less in many cases. As many of the apps I tried out are crude as compared to many of the iPhone apps.

I downloaded about a dozen apps. Some I liked like Pandora, Slacker, IHeartRadio, vlingo and Bloomberg. What annoyed me was some so-called apps like MLB.com, Google and Fox News was nothing more than a bookmark, that launches the BlackBerry browser! Is a "bookmark" an application, REALLY? Sure these are free apps, but they are not even apps! I downloaded AIM, Where, Facebook, WSJ, Google Maps, Flycast, Shazam, and a few others. The Associated Press app that cost $2.99 did not work properly and was a crude version as compared with the free AP app on the iPhone.

I did not find any of the apps I tried to match the similar iPhone versions in slickness, UI, features, or ease of use. You can only install apps to your BlackBerry’s internal memory so you are limited, instead of the flash memory card you may have installed. You can store your apps online, but this is hardly convenient.

RIM will find it hard to compete with the 30,000 apps that Apple has available for iPhone and iPod touch owners. The App World has gaping holes such as no apps for Amazon Kindle, a full-featured MLB.com app, high-end games, Simplify Media, etc.

As I am sure that more and better featured apps will come, and the App World moves RIM into the platform competition. Developers however will have to struggle with many different models of BlackBerry, an inferior SDK from RIM and complicated Java platform.

BlackBerry owners will be happy to see the App World as they should. Of course I own a BlackBerry, iPhone, Windows Mobile, and a Nokia so my comparisons will not be so familiar or relevant to the average BlackBerry owner.

All I can say is I am so glad I own an iPhone!

I have been using a ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook I purchased. I bought this to replace the Asus Eee PC 4G Ultra Portable Computer I reviewed last year. I say replace, but actually I still own the older ASUS netbook.

Atom N280 Powered Battery Life
The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook is one of the first to run on the Intel’s next generation 1.66GHz N280 Atom processor running a much faster front side bus speed of 667MHz. The real advantage to this newer Atom chip is its lower power consumption allowing ASUS to claim a 9.5 hours running time (probably closer to 7 or 8 hours in real world use) with its included 6 cell high density 8700mAh battery pack. ASUS Super Hybrid Engine offers a choice of performance and power consumption modes to extend battery life according to users needs.

ASUS included dynamic underclocking/overclocking utility, Super Hybrid Engine has four pre-configured profiles ( not related to Windows' power saving settings), use the CPU's frequency of the different modes:

Power Saving: Lower FSB of 500MHz, resulting in a CPU speed between 750MHz and 1.25GHz.

High Performance: Stock FSB of 667MHz, resulting in a CPU speed between 1GHz and 1.66GHz.

Super Performance: Higher FSB of 700MHz, resulting in a CPU speed between 1.05GHz and 1.75GHz.

Auto: Switches between Power Saving when running on battery and High Performance when on the AC adapter.

Default was Auto on my unit. If you are doing basic computer tasks on a battery you can switch to lower setting for more battery life.

Plenty of Storage
This netbook features a 160 GB hard drive and ASUS includes 10 GB of file-encrypted Eee Online Storage as part of the purchase price which was $374 from Amazon (free shipping available). Since there is also a built-in media card slot you will not run low on storage. I dropped in a 16 GB SD card with 9 movies already. Great for keeping yourself entertained on a long flight.

Note: the 160 GB 2.5" SATA mechanical hard drive comes partitioned so you will see a C and a D drive.

RAM and Ports
The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook comes with 1 GB of RAM, which I immediately upgraded with a single 2 GB (about $25) RAM module by removing the stock 1 GB RAM module. Easy just two screws (see picture).

Featuring 3 USB ports, RJ-45 wired Ethernet, Audio IO (analog headphone output and analog microphone input), stereo speakers, Memory Card Slot - MultiMedia Card (MMC), Secure Digital (SD) Card, SDHC card slot, 1.3 megapixels webcam, built-in mic, a 1024 x 600 pixel 10-inch screen with VGA out for external monitor this little netbook at 10.47 (W) x 7.53 (D) x 1.12-1.50 (H) inches (smaller than a sheet of paper) weighing 3.2 lbs has a full compliment of ports. Wireless includes 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth V2.0. I most note that the WLAN 802.11n support only includes 2.4GHz only and not 5GHz version.

No built-in optical drive is included like most netbooks, but if you really need one you can purchase an external USB drive. Since ASUS includes InterVideo's WinDVD you can even watch DVDs with an external drive.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is a chicklet style that is 92-percent sized and quite usable. Looks a bit like an Apple MacBook keyboard. This is a big improvement over some earlier netbooks.

Touchpad features a multi-touch interface allows you to scroll and zoom quickly with 2 fingers. No this is not a Mac, but pretty decent touchpad for a small netbook allowing scrolling while browsing by just using two fingers. The touchpad on the 1000HE is a big improvement over some netbooks, but far from perfect.

The two buttons below the touchpad are a bit stiff, but seems to have loosened up a little with use.

What's In The Box
Included in the box was the AC power supply, a zipped travel sleeve, restore DVD, printed operating instructions and warranty card. Warranty is 1 year (6 month for battery) and a 30 day ASUS’ Zero Bright Dot Guarantee where if the purchaser discovers one defective bright dot within 30 days of purchase, ASUS will replace the panel without cost to the purchaser.

The 1000HE Eee PC comes with a built-in quick recovery system that restores your system to its factory settings by just pressing F9 three times during start-up. With the quick F9 recovery process, you won't need any Windows CD or driver CD.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook I received shipped with Windows XP Home and included StarOffice 8, Adobe Reader 8, InterVideo's WinDVD, Skype and thankfully ASUS did not fill it up with loads of crapware. No anti-virus is included so the first thing I did after powering up was run Windows Update to make sure Windows XP was totally patched. install Microsoft Windows Defender (free) spyware protection and AVG Free anti-virus.

I installed some additional software including iTunes, Safari 4 beta, QuickTime, Bonjour for Windows, MobileMe Control Panel, VLC media player, Firefox, Picasa 3, TweetDeck, SlingPlayer, Real VNC, FileZille FTP, Nvu, Yahoo! Widgets, and VZAccess Manager for using my USB727 EVDO modem.

Fit and Finish
The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE comes in Black or Blue. I choose the Black one. The smooth glossy plastic finish looks good, but does attract dust and finger prints. Glare is also a bit of an issue. You may like me wish it was a matt black finish.

On the bottom is a plastic cover with only two screws to get to the 2.5" SATA mechanical hard drive and RAM which is a single 1 GB DDR2 SO-DIMM slot. Easily upgrade HD or RAM in about five minutes. You can upgrade to a 2 GB DDR2 SO-DIMM module as I did by removing the stock RAM. Upgrading the hard drive to a solid state unit (SSD) is surely possible.

Performance
With the weigh, size, storage, and performance I would almost consider the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook to be a "sub-note" rather than a lighter and less powered netbook that are on the market. The screen is a nice vibrant bright display and video playback is quite good including HD playback from Hulu, iTunes, and some movies I loaded on SD media card played with Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player and VLC. This is something that has not been the case on some netbooks using Atom processors.

Browsing and running installed software was quite a good experience for such a small device and I have not felt slowed down while checking email, using the included StarOffice, browsing, posting to blogs, etc. With SlingPlayer installed, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook makes a great little TV. The aspect ratio (lies somewhere between 16:9 and 16:10) of the 10-inch 1024 x 600 resolution looks made for this.

I found the built-in wireless to be adequate with no issues connecting to various "b" networks. Using my EVDO USB727 USB modem to connect to Verizon's cellular broadband network as easy as you might expect allowing for Internet access from most anywhere.

Conclusions
Overall I am quite happy with the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE as it was perfect for what my intended use as a lighter weight and inexpensive laptop for travel. Battery life and video playback improved made upgrading worthwhile.

Improvements on the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE would be slimness, weight, better graphics and wireless "n" supporting 5Ghz. Built-in GPS chip and cellular broadband would certainly make this little computer even more interesting.

I would not advise that this little netbook be your primary computer, but that is not the intentions of most buyers of netbooks.

I sure wish Apple would join the netbook category. I may in the future try turning this ASUS Eee PC 1000HE into a "hackintosh" by trying to put OS X on it, but for now Windows Home serves my purpose which is basic computing on the move.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook is awarded 4.5 out of 5 Paws

Ballmer speaking at Microsoft’s annual Strategic Update in New York on Tuesday, said that while consumers might be fascinated with the iPhone and BlackBerry, carriers and OEMs much prefer Windows Mobile. “The truth of the matter is all the consumer market mojo is with Apple and to a lesser extent BlackBerry,” Ballmer said. “And yet, the real market momentum with operators and the real market momentum with device manufacturers seems to primarily be with Windows Mobile and Android. … “I think the guys who are in the best position to benefit are the guys who actually have phones at low price points,” Ballmer added. “I think that’s a distinct advantage that we have,”

Gee I did not know that the Blackberry was really a consumer device? I always see corporate types with them. Gee even my company gave me one! Too bad carriers and OEMs are not the ultimate buyers, actual people are!

I would highly recommend Amazon's Kindle 2 to avid readers, casual readers might be quite satisfied with the ability to just read on their smartphones.

Shortcovers is owned and operated by Indigo Books & Music, the largest book retailer in Canada. They are bringing a new challenger to the Kindle to the iPhone. I was expecting Amazon to announce their own smartphone version of the Kindle software to smartphones, but they seem to be pushing just the hardware right now. Will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Like Kindle, Shortcovers will let you read the first chapter of any book free of charge. The soon to be available iPhone app (Blackberry and other smartphones apps are also coming) will offers you two options: buy a chapter at a time, or purchase the entire book. Single chapters are expected to cost around 99 cents, while full books will range between $10 and $20, on average. If you decide you want to get a book physically shipped, you can do that, too.

The iPhone app, expected in late February will also offer some interesting social features, too, including a rating and sharing system, a tagging function, and a set of tools so you can build your own literary mixes. You'll even be able to upload your own writing and add it in.

I recently purchased the BlueAnt V1 Bluetooth headset [$78.24 from Amazon] with voice control to replace a BlueAnt Z9i that I lost. I really liked my BlueAnt Z9i [$52.98 from Amazon] and was upset when I lost it. I think it fell out of my coat pocket. So wanting a replacement I choose the newer BlueAnt V1 that has almost identical size and shape as well as similar dual microphones and voice isolation technology. BlueAnt has added some new goodness to the V1, by including Sensory's BlueGenie voice interface, which provides voice recognition for functions such as calling your voice mail, home, office or speed dial with a simple voice command. Paired with an iPhone, this adds some of the voice dialing Apple did not include.

Like the BlueAnt Z9i the V1 includes a shirt clip attached to the back that if I would have used, I might not have lost my Z9i. The V1 is small at 1.5" x 0.7" x 0.4" (41mm x 17.5.mm x 11mm) and light 0.35oz (10g) and fits on your ear. One of the reasons I am not as fond of the Jawbone 2 (I own one of these also) is the fit. The Jawbone 2 must rest against you cheek to work well and I never can get a fit that works for me. The adjustable ear piece and shape of the BlueAnt V1 fits me perfectly. When I am wearing the BlueAnt V1 I forget I have it one.

The BlueAnt V1 comes in a glossy striped silver plastic on front and a matte black plastic on its back and edges. This is the one way to tell it from the BlueAnt Z9i which is all black as both feature 3 flush mounted buttons. The multi-function button, also known as the BlueAnt button, is square in shape and located towards the top center of the headset. The button is easy to fine and use. Volume controls are found on the edge of the V1 and are easily located by the raised + and - markings.

The BlueAnt V1 uses a rechargeable 3.7V LithiumPolymer battery that delivers up to 5 hours of talk time or 200 hours (8.3 days) of standby time. Included Accessories are 1 transparent ear hook, 1 rubberized chrome ear hook, 2 rubber ear bud covers, 2 foam tips for a tight fit, an AC to USB power adaptor, USB car charger, USB adapter, and USB gooseneck charging cable. To save space the BlueAnt V1 has proprietary connector instead of using the more common micro-USB connector which is surprisingly different from the one that comes on the Z9i. They include and adapter to use a micro-USB cable to charge the V1. Charging takes about 2 hours before its initial use.

What sets the BlueAnt V1 apart besides its excellent sound and noise canceling is its voice dialing feature, which is built into the headset instead of relying on the phone. This is great for iPhone users as Apple has yet to add any voice dialing features other than the several third party apps available in the App Store.

Setup is pretty simple as the V1 provides an audio guided pairing with any Bluetooth headset or handsfree enabled device. Most common functions can be controlled via voice like turning the V1 off, checking its battery like, dialing home or office, checking voicemail, and even turning off the blinking blue LED. The male voice inside the V1 will guide you. Only wish the voice that the BlueAnt used was female as I think I am more apt to taking instructions from females (HAHA). However the voice they used is easy to understand and pleasant enough I guess.

With the BlueAnt V1 you press the multifunction button to make the headset start listening to commands. The V1 offers voice commands for calling voicemail, home, office, Google's GOOG-411 service, and 5 voice activated speed dials. The V1 does not handle direct digit dialing or be able to call all the contacts in your address book. What you do is set up the speed dial positions on your cell phone in the order that BlueAnt recommends. On an iPhone you do this with the Favorite section of your Phone. The V1's voice control system, it can be easily turned off with the correct voice command or by holding down both volume buttons simultaneously.

Don't worry all you have to do is ask the V1 to "Teach Me" and it will tell you what you can say with the voice commands. They also include some cheat sheets to get you used to the V1. The learning curve is not great and you will be using voice commands instantly. The unit even tells you when your phone is connected and not connected via voice instead of annoying beeps.

The voice system works well and responds to all commands even in some pretty loud environments. When an inbound call comes in the entire number, NOT name must be announced before you can command it to answer or ignore the call, something that can be a bit annoying. To end calls a quick double press of the V1's multifunction button is needed or wait until the other end hangs up.

BlueAnt's patented voice isolation technology is impressive, offering two settings: standard for normal environments and max for high levels of noise such as busy streets or the windy outdoors. The V1 performs quite well in standard mode for most times. Switching to the max setting the sound gets a bit tinnier, but filters out incredible amounts of noise in windy environments and car noise. Overall sound quality and levels are excellent with most callers not realizing you are using a headset. This is one the few headsets that I did not have to raise the volume as it is plenty loud enough. I lowered it!

BlueAnt offers free firmware upgrades available on their website. However Windows is required to do these updates. Macs running Windows via Boot Camp, VMware or Parallels will have no problem.

I use the BlueAnt V1 with an iPhone 3G and Blackberry Curve 8330 as the headset can be paired with multiple devices at the same time. Worked extremely well with both cell phones as well as getting great results when trying it out using Skype on my MacBook Pro.

Overall I love the BlueAnt V1 for its impressive sound quality, for its great fit and its voice control system. I highly recommend this headset over the others I have tried including the excellent Aliph Jawbone 2 [$76.28 from Amazon]. For iPhone owners it would be a great addition especially.

The BlueAnt V1 is awarded 4.5 out of 5 Paws

I bought the ASUS Eee PC 4G Ultra Portable Computer last year [see my review] one of the first Asus Netbooks, the company that helped invent the category. Well ASUS is bringing the new ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook with specs to impress.

The new ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook contains Intel's next generation 1.66GHz N280 Atom processor running a much faster front side bus speed of 667MHz and can run a whopping 9.5 hours (probably closer to 8 hours in real world use). Add wireless N, a 160GB Hard Drive, 1 GB RAM (can be upgraded to 2 GB), 3 USB ports, Bluetooth, MMC/SDHC/Memory Stick/MS-Pro flash card slot, 1.3 megapixels webcam, a 1024 x 600 pixel, 10 inch screen with VGA out for external monitor and 10GB of free online storage still weighing in at about 3 lbs. This little netbook is coming with Windows XP Home (Hackintosh or Linux anyone?) Amazon taking pre-orders with a $25 discount and free shipping making the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook only $374! I am ordering one. Sure wish Apple would enter this category, maybe soon.

I have been using BlueAnt's Z9i Bluetooth Headset on my iPhone 3G and Blackberry for about six months now. I liked it better than the Jawbone 2 I also own. Now BlueAnt has introduced its newest Bluetooth headset, the Q1 at CES.

The new BlueAnt Q1, will be released in late March, will feature dual microphones for noise reduction that cancel out direct 10mph winds according to the company. Like the V1, users can control the headset with their voice using the BlueGenie Natural Voice Interface, capable of adjusting volume up and down just by saying "volume up" or "volume down."

Apple with its one model smartphone has now outsold all of Windows Mobile and its related devices. So much for Steve Ballmer's predictions. According to new Gartner data. The launch of iPhone 3G in the summer was enough to push Apple to 12.9 percent market share and was enough to unseat Windows Mobile both within the US and internationally.

Seems the iPhone also has helped drop Nokia smartphone sales for the first time and has got RIM trying hard to copy the Apple model. RIM stock was downgraded yesterday. Read more at electronista.

Road warriors may find the iPhone's battery a bit inadequate. Personally, I can usually get through a work day on a charge. Sometimes my battery is spent by end of the work day however if I used my iPhone a lot. If you are finding that your iPhone battery is spent you may want to get a battery extender.

The iPhone does not having a replaceable battery. Using one of these battery extenders solves this completely. Making the iPhone's non-replaceable battery mostly irrelevant.

There are several models to choose from. Here are the ones I came up with. See them all...

Packet8 has launched MobileTalk for iPhone users (as well as other cellphones) that claims to save over 90% on international calls for mobile phone calls. This is not actually a VoIP application. What it does is offer a compelling service for mobile phone users that make a lot of international calls that does not require a data plan.

MobileTalk for the iPhone is a web app that allows you to use service without a monthly fee. MobileTalk claims to intelligently redirect your international calls to an access number in the same area code as your mobile phone number, and connects the call over the Packet8 VoIP phone service network. This way you pay for a local cell phone call (using your minutes) and pay the much lower Packet 8 rate per minute for the international call.

Alternatives to MobileTalk are Raketu, RingFree, iPhoneGnome, Talkety, Truphone or JAJAH.

iCall looks very compelling as a native VoIP app, but it is not available yet. Closest thing to a native VoIP app for the iPhone right now is fring.

Since the Zune has no browser, no email, or any app that can really use the Internet saying it is offering free WiFi at participating McDonalds is a bit over the top. All Zune owners can really do with this is, buy songs while they chow down on their favorite McProduct. Sure seems like Microsoft tried to copy Apple / Starbucks with their speciality, "years later and not as good!"

The entire Zune update is a bit underwhelming if you ask me. I may be a bit bias of this one, however. Hey did you ever notice you never see Steve Ballmer and Ronald McDonald together? You don't think they are really the same....? Nah!

I just ordered a new iPod/iPhone interface for my Toyota mini-van. I have had an after market Peripheral device in my van since I bought it in 2005. It has worked fine for me. It allows direct connection to my vehicles sound system and allowed control from my steering wheel controls. Sure beats FM modulators and cassette adapters.

Unfortunately, the cable the connects to the iPod or iPhone (1st generation) broke and I have had some ugly black electrical tape on it for some time. This is given me the excuse to replace the unit instead of just the cable. I actually did buy a cable replacement that ended up being the wrong one.

The device I have installed now only has a dock connector that allows the iPod or 1st generation iPhone charge and play through my van's stereo system. What I have been longing for was an additional stereo input so I could connect any additional device.

Another problem is many charging accessories that worked with the iPod and the 1st generation iPhone no longer work with the new iPhone 3G due to a change Apple has made to the way it charges.

There is some hope that third party adapters may in some cases restore charging to the iPhone 3G with older accessories.

Looking for a new kit to replace my current one turned up several choices offering a second input. That is one with a dock connector that can charge most iPods and the 1st generation iPhone and a stereo RCA input you can switch to for other devices. I could not find any that could guarantee charging for the newer iPhone 3G however.

I ended up ordering the USA Spec PA20-Toy Toyota/Lexus iPod Adapter w/ Aux Input, $158 [Amazon link]. It offered exactly what I was looking for. The manufacturers website also clarified the iPhone 3G charging issue and will be offering a quick solution (see below).

Important Note - NEW 3 G PHONE !!

Apple changed the connector dock which results that all existing interface (including all other brands) cables do not charge the new 3G

We have a new cable being designed that will charge the 3G Phone. This new cable should be available in September. Please email sales for order information.

Please note, due to software changes in the new iPods, the new iPhone and iTouch, work fine in the direct mode, but do not work in our new Hybrid mode!
The new models work fine on the new PA20 TOY with all features!

the USA Spec PA20-Toy iPod Interface offers the following features:

IPOD interface to connect, control, charge and play an IPOD through a factory radio

All plug and play harnesses included for most applications and for easy installation

Adds additional single stereo Aux input

Song up/down Playlist/disc select, shuffle and random play features all control iPod

Auto memory feature – Auto locates last song listened to on each play list

Auto Skip 10+ songs in each play list with factory CD Changer FF button

Auto skip to end of play list with factory CD Changer FF button

Auto Maintain current play list when migrating from portable to in car use

Auto Charge feature charges IPOD battery and auto stops after 1 hour of non use.

In some vehicles if Vehicle has existing external CD Changer it must be disconnected.

Auto Playlist Select – If no play list is created, Auto Selects first 5 play list on iPod

Other New Features:
• Playlist Mode - Create up to 5 favorite mobile playlist then use the radio’s CD changer controls to access and control your playlist.
• Direct Mode - Gives user complete control of their iPod while it is connected to the factory radio. iPod is not locked out while connected to the radio and user is able to manually access their complete iPod content. Radio still can adjust song up/down random or shuffle play but user can manually control their iPod and select any playlist, genre or Artist of their choice.
• New Hybrid Mode! - Combines best features of Direct Mode and Playlist Mode. Create and access your favorite mobile playlist or directly access all your iPod content manually on your iPod. iPod displays song title information and iPod is not locked, so the iPod can be operated manually at all times.

No word on the cost of the new cable that will be needed to charge the iPhone 3G yet. But I doubt it will be that expensive. Besides with the AUX input I can connect the iPhone 3G to my vehicle's sound system and charge it with a lighter plug charger.

I am looking forward to connecting my iPod classic to the dock connector and my iPhone 3G or any other device that has audio out to the stereo AUX input for a long driving tour of Canada I have at the end of the month. Look for my full review of the USA Spec PA20-Toy Toyota/Lexus iPod Adapter w/ Aux Input after that trip.

In my opinion all cars today should at least have a AUX audio input. My fuel saving Toyota Yaris does.

By the way if you are looking for a nice mounting system for your car for any of your electronic devices check out ProClipUSA. Love their stuff. I just updated the ProClip mount in my vehicle to a dual mount.

Basically this is an in-car "hotspot" that will be made available as an option in all 2009 Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep vehicles costing $449 with service set for $29 per month with a contract.

The range for the hotspot will be about 100 feet around the vehicle. If you are interested in this feature now take a look at my review CradlePoint PHS300 Allows WiFi Almost Anywhere.

Samsung Instinct (sold on Sprint) tries and fails to match the iPhone 3G features. Is this a fair comparison? Samsung thinks so, they even built a website called nowisgood.com comparing the two devices. The Samsung phone lacks WiFi and Multi-touch. Buyer beware as I have pointed out before with the other so-called iPhone killers is "touch" is NOT Multi-touch, they are light years apart as a user interface. The Samsung Instinct is $199 with a similar priced service plan as new iPhone 3G which is a more advanced device as well as a great iPod.

With the added new features of Apple's new iPhone 3G, like Microsoft Exchange support, MobileMe service, GPS, 3G networking, and the AppStore that will offer third-party apps installed in a click, the so-called "killer" phones will need to go back to the design and wish phase. A cell phone that just copies the iPhone look without matching the iPhone's mobile computing platform.

The cost of ownership for any cellphone is always the price of the initial outlay of cash PLUS the service plan.

It never ceases to amaze me how people still do not always conceptualize this. This is probably the exact reason the "marketing" works so well. Point of the iPhone 3G being reported most everywhere as a huge price cut, that it simply is not. It is a good value? Let's explore.

First, let's get this FACT out of the way. The new iPhone 3G is NOT CHEAPER, it is more expensive than the original iPhone! See the details in the service plan.

The new iPhone 3G will require "in store" activation and the signing of a two year contract the requires a data plan. The days of unlocked iPhones have ended in the near term at least.

The cost of the iPhone 3G when it launches on July 11 will be $199 for the 8GB version and $299 upfront and the cost of the service plan you pick. In the U.S. that means a plan that AT&T will be offering.

The data plan for the original iPhone was $20 and the included 200 SMS messages per month. The new iPhone 3G data plan will now be a higher $30 per month with NO SMS messages per month. Want SMS? You will now pay an extra $5 per month for 250 SMS messages. This adds up to a $15 per month X 24 months is a $360 increase over the original iPhone data plan.

If you take off the $200 upfront cost that is being reported as a "huge" price cut you get an increase of $160 to cost of ownership of an iPhone 3G!

The iPhone 3G has a lower entry price and an increase on the total cost of ownership. This is the type of marketing the cellphone industry has been using for years.

I pointed this out when the original iPhone was launched and was criticized by the likes of Steve Ballmer. They were using the lower entry prices of competing smartphones to tout a lower cost when actually they were more expensive to own and were an inferior device.

Now that Apple and AT&T has moved to a more traditional approach with the iPhone 3G is the extra cost a good value?

That of course will depend on what you consider value. In my opinion I think it is still a good value as compared to other competing smartphones in its features and ease of use.

If you already own the original iPhone depending on your needs it may not be worth upgrading unless you "must have" the 3G speed and better location accuracy of the GPS chip. The free iPhone 2.0 software upgrade that is coming will give the original iPhone owners all the other features of the iPhone 3G.

The iPhone 3G will be 2.8 times faster accessing the Internet than the original iPhone that uses the EDGE network. Of course as with all wireless, it always depends on were you are standing at the moment of use.

Comparing the value of the new iPhone 3G against competing smartphones the iPhone 3G more than holds its own. In my opinion surpasses most all of them. First off the iPhone is an iPod. Probably the best iPod ever. If you have a huge iTunes Library as I have this is a huge advantage. The new App Store will be one of the most compelling reasons to consider the iPhone over the competitors. MobileMe with its "exchange for the rest of us" will also be quite appealing.

Business users maybe very tempted to leave their Blackberry and move to the shiny new iPhone 3G as built-in Microsoft Exchange. Time will tell.

What might be taking a page out of the Microsoft play book, RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, tells Silicon.com reporter Natasha Lomas, the new Blackberry Bold is not "inspired" by the iPhone, after all. In regard to very iPhone-like exterior with very similar glossy-black-front-with-silver-bevel-edge on the upcoming BlackBerry Bold:

This is three years in the making. So I’m sorry but this wasn’t a response to another device. Either that or we have a time machine somewhere, or some kind of magic crystal ball or something. This was actually designed three years ago and the actual physical design of this product — I have the original models from 2006.

Really, how long does it take RIM to design a device anyway? Lets face it the Blackberry Bold is a nice Blackberry, but has little in the way of innovation from the current Blackberry. Maybe Apple copied the iPhone design from them when it shipped a year ago?

According to RIM co-CEO Mike Lazaridis, "If you go back in history, just about every major consumer electronics technology in history started in the enterprise. So everything from printers, fax machines, telephones, typewriters--you name it, it all started in the enterprise."

Sure like the first personal PC, the Apple II and the Mac, gaming consoles, MP3 players, TVs, VHS, DVD, stereos... Oh wait all of these started with "consumers." Huh?

Mr. Lazaridis, said "We're already working on our next-generation platform." Let me guess, a touch or multi-touch Blackberry, that is three years in the making that is NOT at all like or inspired by the iPhone!

Shouldn't a product be at least available to purchase before it is said to be a "killer" or beating the competitor's product? I think so. Maybe you are like me and are tired of reading about supposed iPhone killers.

RIM (Research in Motion) has shown the new Blackberry Bold 9000 with no launch date or price yet and the pundits are all gasping it to have somehow beaten Apple to the punch for a 3G iPhone that they anticipate may arrive next month. The Blackberry Bold 9000 looks like a nice mobile device, but it will excite only the "crackberry" user.

RIM clearly has tried to copy Apple’s iPhone’s exterior look. They also made their icons less cartoonish. There is where the similarity basically ends.

Remaining on the new upcoming Blackberry is the small screen, on the upper half in order to make room for the plastic buttoned keyboard at the bottom half of the device.

In comparison to the current iPhone the Blackberry Bold 9000 has no touch screen, in fact the screen is small and therefore not the best for watching video. Without the multi-touch technology of Apple’s iPhone it is really the same old, Blackberry in an iPhone-inspired case. A bit of shameless copying, I think. The only thing it "kills" is RIM's self-esteem.

The Blackberry is a nice email device, but no Internet or media powerhouse. As far as syncing media, contacts or calendars with your Mac, forget it without third party workarounds. Syncing media with Windows computers also does not make for a great user experience. iTunes syncing does not exist without third party workarounds. With iTunes implanted on so many desktops this IS an issue.

Where is the Blackberry's version of the iTunes Store? Audiobook support from Audible? Of course you are saying, "the Blackberry is a corporate phone" for business users. Exactly. Not an iPhone killer! They are pointed at different types of users.

The iPhone will certainly stray into RIM's territory with the already announced and demoed iPhone 2.0 software that features Microsoft Exchange support that is built-in natively. Microsoft Exchange is what about 70 percent of businesses use for email, calendars, and contacts. IBM's Lotus Notes is said to also be coming to the iPhone by year's end.

Apple's iPhone 2.0 software is also adding remote wipe that security conscious corporate uses have asked for. In case a "corporate" users iPhone is lost or stolen the device can be wiped, basically erased of all usable data, remotely form by their office IT administrator.

iPhone with Microsoft Exchange Demo

RIM can expect some competition from Apple's iPhone in the enterprise going forward. Being a good mobile email device will only carry you so far. I do not see the Blackberry making a play in any big way to Apple's core customers that are iPod consumers for quite so time.

LG, Samsung, Nokia and others all claim their phones are iPhone killers or say their devices have ALL the features the iPhone has and more. In about every case this is false. Picking a cell phone or mobile device is a personal choice. You should not pick one because someone tells you it is a killer or has all the same features. Why? Usually because they are biased to push their own product, are misinformed, or are plain lying.

A few facts for helping you pick the correct device:

Touch Screen vs. Multi-touch
"Touch" is the new 2008 buzzword even though "touch screens have been around for a long time. The iPhone features a "multi-touch" screen and interface, not a plain touch screen.

Multi-touch allows for you to use two fingers to "spread and pinch" to zoom images up and down or rotate them. Flicking through contacts and using the devices UI is quite a different experience with multi-touch. The iPhone and iPod touch both have "cover flow" for flicking through your albums, pictures, videos, and audiobooks.

The multi-touch feature extends thru-out the devices interface when using the browser to surf the Internet, mail, weather, keyboard functionality, etc.

So when you are told that a "touch" screen is the same as the iPhone's "multi-touch" try it for yourself.

Accelerometer and More
The iPhone comes with a built-in three-axis accelerometer that can sense motion and react with software applications. iPhone’s built-in accelerometer detects when the user has rotated the device from portrait to landscape, then automatically changes the contents of the display accordingly, with users immediately seeing the entire width of a web page, or a photo in its proper landscape aspect ratio.

Games played on an iPhone will dazzle by utilizing the accelerometer. Expect the Nintendo DS and the Sony PSP to feel the heat of the iPhone and iPod touch's gaming capabilities.

The iPhone also employs a proximity sensor and an ambient light sensor. iPhone’s built-in proximity sensor detects when you lift iPhone to your ear and immediately turns off the display to save power and prevent inadvertent touches until iPhone is moved away. iPhone’s built-in ambient light sensor automatically adjusts the display’s brightness to the appropriate level for the current ambient light, thereby enhancing the user experience and saving power at the same time.

Few of the iPhone competitors have utilize an accelerometer and therefore lack the enhancements it can provide.

Keyboard
Apple's iPhone uses a full QWERTY touch screen keyboard that comes on screen only when you need it. This allows for the mobile device to be smaller, lighter and thinner while allowing you to have a screen size that is almost the size of the device to watch video and browser the Internet on.

Contrary to some early reports on the iPhone, the software based virtual keyboard is quite good and very usable. In fact I will say without hesitation better than some mechanical keyboards I have used on many Windows mobile phones.

Apple has bet that the iPhone's virtual touch screen keyboard would be good enough for most users. Based on a February survey by ChangeWave Research of iPhone owners that found 72 percent “very satisfied” versus 55 percent for RIM's Blackberry, Apple seems to be correct.

In many of the applications on the iPhone the keyboard gets larger in "landscape" mode when you simply turn the iPhone (due to the built-in accelerometer that senses the motion. The iPhone also will suggest and corrects as you type. It will be interesting to see how the iPhone's keyboard may improve in the next generation.

If you must have a mechanical keyboard their are plenty of choices. You will pay for the mechanical keyboard with a smaller screen or a thicker heavier device in almost all cases. This is a personal choice. Some Blackberry users swear by its keyboard. Others like myself prefer the thinner iPhone with a much bigger screen.

Network
Wi-Fi, 3G, EV-DO, EDGE or HSDPA which is better for your use? When if comes to cell networks like 3G, EV-DO, EDGE or HSDPA is usually always depends on where you are standing for the time you are using it. Verizon's network has excellent coverage in some areas as does Sprint, AT&T, T-Mobile and others.

In my area on the east coast, the even the slower AT&T EDGE network is pretty adequate for surfing the web, etc. Recently, a study done by ComputerWorld claimed that AT&T had the fastest 3G network in their tests in the tri-state area. The iPhone is rumored to be able to use this network in its next generation.

Having a device that has more than one way to connect is great. This leads me to point out Wi-Fi as a feature.

Many mobile phones these days are leaving out Wi-Fi as a feature (probably by request of the wireless carriers). This is a great loss to many users. Wi-Fi is usually faster than the cell network in many cases and especially useful when in your home or wireless enabled office. With some many open and free Wi-Fi hotspots available in coffee shops, books stores, cafeterias, restaurants, hotels and airports why would you want to give this up? So many of the so-called iPhone killers have no Wi-Fi at all.

Nothing worse than being in a location that has a perfectly free and fast hotspot and have "little or no bars" on the cell network. Most all carriers have data usage limits on their networks. Wi-Fi usually does not, especially in your own home or office. Not having Wi-Fi on a device is a "killer" for me, a "deal" killer.

Browsing the Internet
Not all mobile browsers are equal. The iPhone's mobile Safari is one of the best mobile browsers I have ever used. Together with the iPhone multi-touch interface, the large screen and the built-in accelerometer making surfing the web on a mobile device a great experience. This in my opinion is one of the strongest features on the iPhone over some of its competitors. If surfing Internet on the road is important to you, try an iPhone.

Having the Internet in your pocket is the "killer" app. But the device in your pocket has to make the Internet usable. The iPhone does this extremely well with the mobile Safari browser, multi-touch and the iPhone's accelerometer.

The Safari browser is included and is more secure than Opera's Mini browser that has to be installed on cellphones.

From the Opera website FAQ for Opera Mini:
Is there any end-to-end security between my handset and — for example — paypal.com or my bank?
No. If you need full end-to-end encryption, you should use a full Web browser such as Opera Mobile.

Opera Mini uses a transcoder server to translate HTML/CSS/JavaScript into a more compact format. It will also shrink any images to fit the screen of your handset. This translation step makes Opera Mini fast, small, and also very cheap to use. To be able to do this translation, the Opera Mini server needs to have access to the unencrypted version of the Web page. Therefore no end-to-end encryption between the client and the remote Web server is possible.

The iPhone is the leader in mobile browsing among iPhones with Google reporting that they seeing 50 times more search requests coming from the iPhone than any other mobile handset. Even though the iPhone has yet to support Flash.

Email
Email is the Blackberry's strong point. The iPhone is no slouch in this area with support for Gmail, Yahoo, .Mac, AOL, IMAP, POP, and Exchange.

With the addition of full native support for Microsoft Exchange and Lotus Notes coming soon, Blackberry will no longer have an advantage, even for corporate users.

Supporting and using multiple email accounts on an iPhone is easy. Reading attachments including PDFs, Word files, Excel files and viewing images is also supported.

SMS and Text Messaging
SMS text messaging has become a preferred communication tool for many users. The iPhone has excellent SMS support.

There are numerous web apps for the iPhone for text chatting on AOL, Yahoo and others to keep up with your online buddies. I have used JiveTalk, Meebo, and AIM.

Syncing with Your Computer
If being able to sync your contacts, calendars, mail, and especially your music, video, audiobooks, podcasts or pictures is important to you. Proceed cautiously. Many of the so-called iPhone killers have little or no ability to sync with a Macintosh without third-party apps add some of these capabilities. Even Windows users may find the syncing a headache, especially for their media.

Of course syncing media like your photos, audio, and video is where the iPhone is "best of class" as it is an iPod.

Buying Music and Video
As you would expect, the iPhone excels in buying, syncing, and playing music, TV shows, movies, podcasts, and audiobooks with its connection to the iTunes Store. Apple is now the number one retailer in the US of music.

You can buy music on the road from the iTunes Wi-Fi store and the tracks purchased will "sync" back to your Mac or PC running iTunes the next time you connect it.

You can also "rent" movies from iTunes and play them back on your iPhone. The iPhone also has the ability to playback video on a TV with Apple's optional cables or dock.

Audio - Frequency response: 20Hz to 20,000Hz
Audio formats supported: AAC, Protected AAC, MP3, MP3 VBR, Audible (formats 1, 2, and 3), Apple Lossless, AIFF, and WAV

Video formats supported: H.264 video, up to 1.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Low-Complexity version of the H.264 Baseline Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; H.264 video, up to 768 Kbps, 320 by 240 pixels, 30 frames per second, Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video, up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats

Audiobooks
I personally are longtime subscriber to Audible. I listen to audiobooks all the time, especially the car. The iPhone like the iPod totally supports Audible and Apple even sells audiobooks from Audible in the iTunes music store. Blackberry does not support this feature. It is available of some mobile phones however.

Watching TV
Some of the iPhone competitors offer the ability to watch TV utilizing a service from Qualcomm called MediaFLO. This is sold under the name of VCAST (Verizon) or AT&T Mobile TV. These are basically video clips you can view from the road and usually coast about $15 per month on top of your cell phone bill.

Apple has the iTunes Store that offers probably more content than anyone as well as including a YouTube application on the iPhone. Therefore does not offer MediaFLO. There are however several services that offer mobile music like FlyTunes.fm and seeqpod for the iPhone.

One of the most anticipated apps is SlingPlayer for the iPhone, maybe we will see it soon. I think we will see several solutions for the iPhone that will allow viewing video on the road when the App Store gets launched next month which is the result of Apple iPhone software developers kit (SDK) release. There are many websites where iPhone users can watch streaming media right now. NBC has begun offering full-length streaming episodes of popular shows “The Office” and “30 Rock” to the iPhone and iPod touch in Quicktime format from NBC.com.

Bluetooth
Most mobile phones have Bluetooth now-a-days, except maybe the lowest priced ones. With many states outlawing handheld use while driving some form of headset is required. Bluetooth gets rid of the wires. Few mobile phones have stereo Bluetooth that allows for listening to music for instance. One reason is Bluetooth's limitations. The iPhone has standard Bluetooth as most of its competitors have.

Visual Voicemail
Allows you to look at a list of your voicemails, decide which message to listen to, then go directly to that messages without listening to the prior messages. Just like email, iPhone’s Visual Voicemail enables users to immediately randomly access those messages that interest them most. Fantastic time saver left off most ALL of the iPhone "killers."

GPS and Maps
Getting directions and using geo-tagging is becoming a fantastic feature on many mobile phones. The current iPhone offers a nice Google Map application that is quite useful that gives directions and traffic. But the iPhone does not offer a true GPS (Global Positioning System) chip, utilizing a IP and cell phone tower localizing technology instead. Although this works pretty well it is not as accurate as a true GPS. The next generation of the iPhone may change this as it is rumored to have a GPS chip.

Some of the iPhone competitors already offer a GPS chip and turn by turn directions, many times at an additional monthly price. I use a Garmin Nuvi for this (no monthly charge).

Voice Dialing
My Windows mobile phone offers voice dialing. You press a button and speak into the phone the name of the person you want to call. Sometimes it actually gets it right!

The iPhone does not yet offer voice dialing. I would love to see this added, but I insist it be more accurate.

Camera
The current iPhone includes a 2 mega-pixel camera that takes still images. The camera and its usability is now the most popular phone for uploading pictures according to Flickr, the world’s largest gallery of online pictures.

Getting the pictures you have taken on the web or sent in an email is where the iPhone really shines. All of this is as easy as one finger touch.

The iPhone's built-in Photo app can sync with your computer to view your photos on the iPhone or download the pictures you took with the iPhone's camera. Viewing automatic slideshows directly on the iPhone or even viewable on a TV screen (with optional cables) is easy. Using the multi-touch display allows you to pinch and squeeze to zoom your photos is very useful. Adding the pictures to their associated contacts or making them wallpaper is quite easy.

The iPhone's camera however does not have a flash or record video. Maybe next generation?

MMS Support
Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) sometimes called Picture and Video Messaging Service is common to some cell phone users. This allows sending messages that include multimedia objects (images, audio, video, rich text) and not just text as in Short Message Service (SMS). The Apple iPhone does not have this feature and uses a email mostly to send pictures. The iPhone can not send or receive MMS, although third party solution are popping up. It is not know if Apple will include this in the next generation iPhone or iPhone 2.0 software.

Mostly, we have not missed it, but some users would like to see it implemented in the iPhone.

Notes
The iPhone has a note application that is in my opinion not a complete solution as of yet. You can take notes directly on the iPhone, but there is no easy way to sync them back to your computer. You can email the note. Although, the note application is quite nice, it will not give Palm users what they are used to.

Contacts and Calendars
Unlike the current Notes application on the iPhone, contacts and calendars sync nicely with your computer. This makes maintaining your contacts and calendar on the iPhone easy as events or contacts added on the iPhone can be synced back to your computer and vice versa.

Storage Space
Storage space on the current iPhone is from 8G to 16GB. Since the current iPod touch offers 32GB, it is likely the next generation iPhone will have at least this amount.

The iPhone has more built-in storage than most mobile devices out of the box. Certainly adequate for most any user. The iPhone does not have a slot to add external memory as some mobile devices do. But with that amount of storage out of the box, you probably will not miss it.

Going Overseas?
The iPhone is a Quad-band (850, 900, 1800, 1900 MHz) world phone supporting GSM/GPRS/EDGE. Make sure to check with the wireless carrier when traveling to ensure you have the correct plan and avoid a surprise in your monthly bill!

f you are planning to travel with your cell phone you will have to make sure your phone is compatible with overseas carriers. CDMA phones are not. You usually need a GSM phone that is compatible for world travel.

Widgets and More
The iPhone features built-in Google Maps, YouTube, Stock, and Weather Widgets. They is also a world clock, alarm, stop watch, timer, and a calculator. These apps are not after-thoughts as they are well thought out and very useful.

Phone
Yes, the iPhone is cell phone. It offers conference calling and has a built-in speakerphone.

I have owned many cell phones and in just about all cases, trying to get a conference call working without dropping the connected caller is near impossible. The iPhone makes this so easy you have to love it.

How many times has your cell phone rang and you wanted a choice to answer it from either the Bluetooth headset or directly on the phone? Again the iPhone makes this easier and user friendly. This small things make living with a cell phone more pleasant.

Battery Life
The iPhone has a built-in battery that is not swappable by the user. This is quite controversial. This has some drawbacks for some users, but makes for a lighter, thinner device. The specs are below:

Weight: 4.8 ounces

Dimensions: 4.5 x 2.4 x 0.46 inches

Talk Time: Up to 8 hours

Standby Time: Up to 10 days

Internet Time: Up to 6 hours

Video Playback Time: Up to 7 hours

Audio Playback Time: Up to 24 hours

Average users may find that they will have to charge their iPhone once every few days. Heavy users will find themselves changing their iPhone every night (which is like most smartphones).

There are plenty of third party battery extenders and power sources that connect right into the bottom dock connector if you need more power on the road. Not much different than carrying an extra battery.

Third Party Apps
Installing third party applications on cellphones is in most cases a pain. First you have to find one that works on YOUR phone and plan the lousy experience of installing it and hoping it works. Then if an update comes around, go through the process again.

The quality of some of these third party apps is well many times not so good.

Next month Apple has plans to change all of that for iPhone users with the launch of the App Store. iPhone users will soon be able to install a third party application with a finger touch from the road or a mouse click at their desktop. The range of apps will promise to astonish most users with many of them being free.

Apple will track the compatibility and updating the apps will be just a finger touch. This in itself is destined to make the iPhone a true "killer" device. There are so many web based apps for the iPhone, but now native apps will be available offering much more.

It may be a long time before the competitors can offer anything like this.

Ease of Use
Apple has long prided itself in building products that offer its users "ease-of-use." The iPod continued this tradition from the Macintosh and the iPhone does the same. Simple, elegant, and easy to use is the target of the iPhone which it hits the bulls-eye in most all cases.

Price
Pricing information of the iPhone is one of the places I see most abused by its competitors. If you actually compare the iPhone PLUS the service package that includes data to other smartphones like the Blackberry, Treo, or Windows Mobile devices you will see they are quite competitive. In some cases cheaper.

Remember the price of a smartphone is the upfront cost plus the cost of the contract from the wireless provider. When you are buying a smartphone you need a data plan to use many of the features.

Pricing for an iPhone starts at $399 (8GB) with a monthly $59.99 plan with 450 minutes talk time, unlimited data, and 200 SMS messages. Blackberry from Verizon runs about $299.99 to $399.99 for the Blackberry and a monthly $79.99 plan with 450 minutes talk time, unlimited data, and $0.20 for messages received and $0.20 for messages sent for SMS messages. The LG Voyager sold by Verizon is $349.99 -$50 rebate similar pricing for plan as Blackberry. Do your own math, the iPhone IS NOT more expensive to comparable smartphones.

On March 6, Apple CEO Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone software roadmap, released the iPhone Software Development Kit, and introduced the iPhone Enterprise Beta Program. Watch the presentation and see what's ahead. see all the features of the current iPhone here.

Summary
When it comes to the Blackberry vs. the iPhone that are lots of differences to consider. For many it may start with the keyboard type and end the screen size or multi-touch.

The iPhone's display is quite large at 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen Multi-Touch display (480-by-320-pixel resolution at 163 ppi) as compared to most mobile devices while staying thin and light. The Blackberry screen size is much smaller, less than half the size physically and at 320 x 240 (higher-end Blackberry like the Curve) less resolution.

In my opinion in order to be a "killer" you have to match or surpass the device you are supposedly killing. Buzzwords and sales-speak won't help you when you have to live with the device. Take it from me I have used cellphones in most all categories. Almost the same, but not quite, can be a big difference.

When shopping for your next mobile phone keep this in mind. Weigh all the features that are most important to "your" needs, get informed and most important TRY the device for more than two seconds before getting out your credit card.

The iPhone is certainly not the device for every person, but with all the hype from the competition you might actually think it was. The competitor's own hype has shown the iPhone seems to be the one they are trying to beat. Of course consumers will vote with their wallets.

There is an old saying "Lies, Damn Lies, and then there are statistics." Microsoft however goes waaaay past this in the latest reported numbers and their own predictions.

I think they must be handing out some of Albert Hofmann's meds in Redmond these days. Fuzzy math and crazy predictions rule the day at Microsoft. In the space of about a week the drum beating coming from Microsoft is a bit ridiculous.

Here's what I am talking about:

Microsoft's Xbox 360 mis-leading numbers to the gaming press released today.

Bill Gates speaking in Tokyo last week claiming the "very rapid sales rate" of Vista claiming it is doing fine. Many say that Vista is the worse blunder in technology ever.

Ballmers' statements of how Microsoft does not need Yahoo to catch Google in search while the latest numbers come out showing Google increasing its lead in US and in Europe.

Zune sales numbers are touted as selling over 2 million units.

Windows Mobile platforms expected to account for 40% of global smartphone market by fiscal 2012, according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices.

Xbox 360
Microsoft tells the gaming press that Xbox 360 has become the first console in the current generation to sell 10 million units in the US. Microsoft also points out its 19 million units sold worldwide. Seems Microsoft thinks there is much to be proud of.

Xbox 360 was released on November 22, 2005. The PlayStation 3 was launched on November 17, 2006. The Nintendo Wii was released on November 19, 2006.

Even with the Xbox 360 having a full year of sales over the competition the numbers are not that impressive, really. Nintendo's Wii is has sold 8.8 million units in the US as of the end of March, and will certainly reach that same 10 million unit milestone, a year sooner! Nintendo Wii has sold 24.45 million units worldwide already passing Xbox 360 sales. Nice that Microsoft saw it fit to leave out the market leader in its calculations. We call that "fuzzy math" here.

Vista
I could write volumes on the failings of Vista. I will save you from that here. But I will point out while Bill Gates was touting the "rapid sales" numbers, Steve Ballmer was telling the press that they were considering extending Windows XP sales and three leading PC makers Dell, HP and Lenovo said they would STILL load Windows XP even if Microsoft decides not to sell it anymore.

How many people bought Vista or got pre-installed on a new PC and rolled it back to Windows XP to get a usable computer? A lot!

The terrible failure of Windows Vista sure helped Apple sell a lot more Macs!

Microsoft and Search
Microsoft with its OWN technology, engineers and lots and lots of money spent has not been able to make a dent in Google search numbers, even though Microsoft controls over 90 percent of the desktop. Their plan was to buy Yahoo the number 2 search company. Some claim that the first order of business was to "convert" Yahoo to Microsoft's OWN technologies.

Now that they failed to buy out Yahoo (although, it may not be over yet) they claim they have other plans using some in house talent and technologies that will help them best Google. All while Google's recent search numbers show they have yet again gained and are almost up to 70 percent in the U.S. and beat 80 percent in Europe. Heavy use of hallucinogens?

Zune Sales
Zunes sales are dismal compared to Apple's iPod. Selling only 2 million units since they went on sale in November 2006. Apple sold 10.6 million iPods last quarter alone.

Part of the problem is the Zune has been slow to innovate and add features. Only recently adding video content and some podcast features. Still no audiobooks or movie rentals. The customer experience has not been that great.

Right now it appears that the Zune is still trying to catch up to the "classic" iPods which Apple is moving like a bullet to replace with much more feature rich and powerful devices like the iPod touch and the iPhone. looks like Microsoft is lost in a fog and digging in the wrong place. Tying the Zune to the Xbox 360 has not faired that well with consumers.

All the Zune really accomplished was to take sales away from Microsoft's former "PlaysForSure" partners without even touching Apple and the iPod.

Microsoft is one of the largest sellers of DRM technology and has continually screwed it up badly. Microsoft purposely killed off Windows Media Player for the Mac in an attempt to lock out Macs and iPods from Microsoft's DRM as if they were the market leader. Making their own DRM not compatible with the iPod has proved to be a bad move.

This has only helped Apple, the iPod and the iTunes Store. Apple does not have a proprietary music format or license DRM and has benefited from the use of DRM in the music industry at the expense of Microsoft.

Windows Mobile Market Share
"Microsoft expects sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market in fiscal 2012 (July 2011-June 2012)", according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices.

This is the latest delusion from Microsoft. Sure if you don't count Apple's iPhone or RIM's Blackberry as "smartphones." Even then, only maybe. More "fuzzy math?"

I will remind you it was Steve Ballmer that made fun of the iPhone when it launched only to see Microsoft's Windows Mobile phones get trounced and surpassed in sales in the first six months of the iPhone's availability.

"Microsoft currently focuses its efforts on promoting the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system (OS) and the company has no plans to launch Windows Mobile 7 until 2009", Wu also stated.

It will take Microsoft that long to "copy" the functionality and try to mimic the ease of use of the "current" iPhone till then. Reason? Microsoft has no modular operating system like Apple has with OS X that allows them to easily port it over to handheld devices like a phone, Internet tablet, or Apple TV like device. They claim to be working on one. Each version of Windows gets bigger, slower, more processor and battery hungry. That includes Windows Mobile. How is it possible the "OS" company with the largest share is so far behind? Maybe chasing Google and Sony is not such a great idea.

The handheld computing device is the future as more people move to wireless Internet and away from their desk. This is why Apple and Google are chasing the mobile phone.

The iPhone will continue to hurt Windows Mobile phone sales with the launch of new iPhone models, global rollout, Apple's SDK (software developers kit) allowing for third party applications, and the App Store that will make installing these apps as easy as a click or a touch of a finger.

It is estimated that about 20 percent or more handsets will adopt the Linux OS by 2013 (Market Research Firm ABI Research). Google's Android is based on Linux and Nokia sells some popular Linux based handheld devices.

Microsoft better make more use of their own products like an Excel spreadsheet when making these predictions. They are sounding more like the government lately than a leading tech company.

If the next iPhone does get 3G support as we all expect, it may be just fine on AT&T in my area. At least according to ComputerWorld who took Verizon, Sprint and AT&T's 3G data services for a spin all around the tri-state area in NY, NJ and CT shows any indication.

Using data cards from each carrier and a Lenovo ThinkPad X300 at over 500 points in order to determine the king of 3G. Surprisingly, AT&T was the snappiest of the bunch in both average (755Kbps) and top data speeds (1.6Mbps).

I have always said cell networks are as good as were you are standing at the moment you are using them. Of course, there's more to consider than just speed.

Sprint gives you unlimited data freedom; Verizon and AT&T have 5GB caps. Also, EV-DO has a bit wider coverage area. But if you're mostly roaming around the NYC area, it looks like AT&T is the speedy choice.

This gives me the idea that an iPhone on this network may be killer, at least in my area.
