One of my favorite Mac developers Boinx Software from Germany was at NAB showing off two of their latest creations BoinxTV and FxChartz. Boinx is the maker of several apps I use regularly - iStopMotion 2, Fotomagico 2, iVeZeen and the recently updated Mouseposé 3. I have written about these Mac products in the past. I stopped by their booth and the guys were happy to show me their new wares.

BoinxTV is an application for video podcasting and IPTV that I thinks will get a warm reception when it is released later this year. This Leopard only app allows for creating live TV on the web with layers, green screen support and recording.

FxChartz is a charting tool for Final Cut Pro. FxChartz works as an extension to Apple's Quartz Composer system that allow designers to draw with dynamic data -- such as stock market information -- from SQL databases, and visualize that data using a charting tool.

I have a lot of "live concert" DVDs in my collection. What I have been doing for some time now is recording the audio from these DVDs on my Mac, importing them to iTunes, syncing with my iPod and having some great concerts to listen to on the road. CDs can be "ripped" into iTunes fast and easy. But DVDs cannot be ripped the same way in iTunes.

It is easy to record any audio playing on your Mac using either WireTap Pro $19 or Audio Hijack $16 ($32 for Pro version). This is great for recording your own podcasts also.

Creating a podcast that people can find and subscribe to can be accomplished by almost anyone that has the desire. This is one of the reasons podcasting has become so popular so fast. Hopefully this post can give you the basics for the entire process of creating and publishing a podcast using OS X. The process for Windows users is basically the same except for the software I mention in this post. I will provide some links for Windows users also. Podcasts can also be done using video, but I concentrate on audio podcasts in this post as these are the most popular.

The basic steps to creating a Podcast are:

Record your show
Edit and mix the audio
Convert to MP3
Add ID3 tags
Enhance your podcast (optional)
Publish your show
Create an RSS feed
Submit your podcast to directories and iTunes
Advertise and Promote

Let's go into each of these steps in more detail.

RSS, "Really Simple Syndication" is being utilized to empower people to subscribe, syndicate, and distribute content such as text, PDFs, audio, and even video to other interested people. Just about anything can be syndicated via RSS. Once information is in an RSS format, an RSS-aware application can check the feed for changes and react to those changes in an appropriate matter. Subscribers can be notified instantly whenever changes, new posts of a website, wiki (open source online encyclopedia), podcast is added, download is available, or even for the revision of an online book.
