Parallels has introduced an all-in-one solution for Windows users thinking about making the switch to Mac much easier with their new Parallels Desktop Switch to Mac Edition.

This version helps PC users make the switch without losing the applications and data they already have on their Windows systems. It also includes two hours of video tutorials for new Mac OS X users. See demo video here.

Parallels has developed a "plug and click" system that moves the entire PC (licensed operating system, applications, files and data) to the new Mac. This includes the Parallels High Speed USB Transfer Cable that connects the two machines and the Enhanced Parallels Transporter: simple, wizard-driven software that walks the user through the move in a few easy clicks.

Parallels Desktop 4.0 Switch to Mac Edition is available from today at Apple stores, at Apple.com and through other preferred retail partners in English, German and French. It costs $99.99.

This worm, called Conficker, as well as Downadup and Kido, has infected unknown millions of Windows computers, and is expected to become active on April 1, 2009. For now, researchers are unsure of what the worm may do; it is just sitting on infected computers waiting for instructions. Researchers think it will connect to remote servers and download code and then become virulent.

This worm, which affects Windows computers, has no effect on Mac OS X; at least not yet. Intego's Virus Monitoring Center is on full alert in case a Mac OS X variant of this worm should appear, but, so far, Mac users are in the clear. However, Mac users who run Windows on their Macs are at the same risk as those running Windows on PCs.

Is it hype or will it be Armageddon? See ComputerWorld FAQ: Conficker clock ticks toward April 1 deadline.

I guess tomorrow Windows users will laugh or cry!

I have been using a ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook I purchased. I bought this to replace the Asus Eee PC 4G Ultra Portable Computer I reviewed last year. I say replace, but actually I still own the older ASUS netbook.

Atom N280 Powered Battery Life
The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook is one of the first to run on the Intel’s next generation 1.66GHz N280 Atom processor running a much faster front side bus speed of 667MHz. The real advantage to this newer Atom chip is its lower power consumption allowing ASUS to claim a 9.5 hours running time (probably closer to 7 or 8 hours in real world use) with its included 6 cell high density 8700mAh battery pack. ASUS Super Hybrid Engine offers a choice of performance and power consumption modes to extend battery life according to users needs.

ASUS included dynamic underclocking/overclocking utility, Super Hybrid Engine has four pre-configured profiles ( not related to Windows' power saving settings), use the CPU's frequency of the different modes:

Power Saving: Lower FSB of 500MHz, resulting in a CPU speed between 750MHz and 1.25GHz.

High Performance: Stock FSB of 667MHz, resulting in a CPU speed between 1GHz and 1.66GHz.

Super Performance: Higher FSB of 700MHz, resulting in a CPU speed between 1.05GHz and 1.75GHz.

Auto: Switches between Power Saving when running on battery and High Performance when on the AC adapter.

Default was Auto on my unit. If you are doing basic computer tasks on a battery you can switch to lower setting for more battery life.

Plenty of Storage
This netbook features a 160 GB hard drive and ASUS includes 10 GB of file-encrypted Eee Online Storage as part of the purchase price which was $374 from Amazon (free shipping available). Since there is also a built-in media card slot you will not run low on storage. I dropped in a 16 GB SD card with 9 movies already. Great for keeping yourself entertained on a long flight.

Note: the 160 GB 2.5" SATA mechanical hard drive comes partitioned so you will see a C and a D drive.

RAM and Ports
The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook comes with 1 GB of RAM, which I immediately upgraded with a single 2 GB (about $25) RAM module by removing the stock 1 GB RAM module. Easy just two screws (see picture).

Featuring 3 USB ports, RJ-45 wired Ethernet, Audio IO (analog headphone output and analog microphone input), stereo speakers, Memory Card Slot - MultiMedia Card (MMC), Secure Digital (SD) Card, SDHC card slot, 1.3 megapixels webcam, built-in mic, a 1024 x 600 pixel 10-inch screen with VGA out for external monitor this little netbook at 10.47 (W) x 7.53 (D) x 1.12-1.50 (H) inches (smaller than a sheet of paper) weighing 3.2 lbs has a full compliment of ports. Wireless includes 802.11b/g/n and Bluetooth V2.0. I most note that the WLAN 802.11n support only includes 2.4GHz only and not 5GHz version.

No built-in optical drive is included like most netbooks, but if you really need one you can purchase an external USB drive. Since ASUS includes InterVideo's WinDVD you can even watch DVDs with an external drive.

Keyboard and Touchpad
The keyboard is a chicklet style that is 92-percent sized and quite usable. Looks a bit like an Apple MacBook keyboard. This is a big improvement over some earlier netbooks.

Touchpad features a multi-touch interface allows you to scroll and zoom quickly with 2 fingers. No this is not a Mac, but pretty decent touchpad for a small netbook allowing scrolling while browsing by just using two fingers. The touchpad on the 1000HE is a big improvement over some netbooks, but far from perfect.

The two buttons below the touchpad are a bit stiff, but seems to have loosened up a little with use.

What's In The Box
Included in the box was the AC power supply, a zipped travel sleeve, restore DVD, printed operating instructions and warranty card. Warranty is 1 year (6 month for battery) and a 30 day ASUS’ Zero Bright Dot Guarantee where if the purchaser discovers one defective bright dot within 30 days of purchase, ASUS will replace the panel without cost to the purchaser.

The 1000HE Eee PC comes with a built-in quick recovery system that restores your system to its factory settings by just pressing F9 three times during start-up. With the quick F9 recovery process, you won't need any Windows CD or driver CD.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook I received shipped with Windows XP Home and included StarOffice 8, Adobe Reader 8, InterVideo's WinDVD, Skype and thankfully ASUS did not fill it up with loads of crapware. No anti-virus is included so the first thing I did after powering up was run Windows Update to make sure Windows XP was totally patched. install Microsoft Windows Defender (free) spyware protection and AVG Free anti-virus.

I installed some additional software including iTunes, Safari 4 beta, QuickTime, Bonjour for Windows, MobileMe Control Panel, VLC media player, Firefox, Picasa 3, TweetDeck, SlingPlayer, Real VNC, FileZille FTP, Nvu, Yahoo! Widgets, and VZAccess Manager for using my USB727 EVDO modem.

Fit and Finish
The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE comes in Black or Blue. I choose the Black one. The smooth glossy plastic finish looks good, but does attract dust and finger prints. Glare is also a bit of an issue. You may like me wish it was a matt black finish.

On the bottom is a plastic cover with only two screws to get to the 2.5" SATA mechanical hard drive and RAM which is a single 1 GB DDR2 SO-DIMM slot. Easily upgrade HD or RAM in about five minutes. You can upgrade to a 2 GB DDR2 SO-DIMM module as I did by removing the stock RAM. Upgrading the hard drive to a solid state unit (SSD) is surely possible.

Performance
With the weigh, size, storage, and performance I would almost consider the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook to be a "sub-note" rather than a lighter and less powered netbook that are on the market. The screen is a nice vibrant bright display and video playback is quite good including HD playback from Hulu, iTunes, and some movies I loaded on SD media card played with Windows Media Player, QuickTime Player and VLC. This is something that has not been the case on some netbooks using Atom processors.

Browsing and running installed software was quite a good experience for such a small device and I have not felt slowed down while checking email, using the included StarOffice, browsing, posting to blogs, etc. With SlingPlayer installed, the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook makes a great little TV. The aspect ratio (lies somewhere between 16:9 and 16:10) of the 10-inch 1024 x 600 resolution looks made for this.

I found the built-in wireless to be adequate with no issues connecting to various "b" networks. Using my EVDO USB727 USB modem to connect to Verizon's cellular broadband network as easy as you might expect allowing for Internet access from most anywhere.

Conclusions
Overall I am quite happy with the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE as it was perfect for what my intended use as a lighter weight and inexpensive laptop for travel. Battery life and video playback improved made upgrading worthwhile.

Improvements on the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE would be slimness, weight, better graphics and wireless "n" supporting 5Ghz. Built-in GPS chip and cellular broadband would certainly make this little computer even more interesting.

I would not advise that this little netbook be your primary computer, but that is not the intentions of most buyers of netbooks.

I sure wish Apple would join the netbook category. I may in the future try turning this ASUS Eee PC 1000HE into a "hackintosh" by trying to put OS X on it, but for now Windows Home serves my purpose which is basic computing on the move.

The ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook is awarded 4.5 out of 5 Paws

Ballmer speaking at Microsoft’s annual Strategic Update in New York on Tuesday, said that while consumers might be fascinated with the iPhone and BlackBerry, carriers and OEMs much prefer Windows Mobile. “The truth of the matter is all the consumer market mojo is with Apple and to a lesser extent BlackBerry,” Ballmer said. “And yet, the real market momentum with operators and the real market momentum with device manufacturers seems to primarily be with Windows Mobile and Android. … “I think the guys who are in the best position to benefit are the guys who actually have phones at low price points,” Ballmer added. “I think that’s a distinct advantage that we have,”

Gee I did not know that the Blackberry was really a consumer device? I always see corporate types with them. Gee even my company gave me one! Too bad carriers and OEMs are not the ultimate buyers, actual people are!

Apple today announced Safari 4 public beta for Mac and Windows. With its new Nitro engine, Safari 4 runs JavaScript 4.2 times faster than Safari 3. And it features many innovative new features that make browsing more intuitive and enjoyable, including Top Sites, Full History Search, Cover Flow, Tabs on Top, and still others. Safari 4 beta is available for immediate download for the Mac and PC.

Taking a lesson from Google Chrome, Apple changed the way tabs work for the better. The tabs now at located at the top with each tab allowing for its own address and search field. This also takes less precious screen space on smaller monitors. Does Apple have a small "netbook" on the way? Who knows.

I have only been using Safari 4 for a very short time on my MacBook Pro, but it sure is faster. Free download here.

Note: It does replace your current Safari, but you can uninstall the beta if you wish.

UPDATE: Been using Safari 4 Beta for the second day and have to say it is the faster browser I have ever used on any platform! Good job Apple.

Well ASUS is bringing the new ASUS Eee PC 1000HE 10-Inch Netbook with specs to impress.

Apple with its one model smartphone has now outsold all of Windows Mobile and its related devices. So much for Steve Ballmer's predictions. According to new Gartner data. The launch of iPhone 3G in the summer was enough to push Apple to 12.9 percent market share and was enough to unseat Windows Mobile both within the US and internationally.

Seems the iPhone also has helped drop Nokia smartphone sales for the first time and has got RIM trying hard to copy the Apple model. RIM stock was downgraded yesterday. Read more at electronista.

I have owned computers for many years running different operating systems including Windows, Amiga, Linux, and Mac OS. I am not writing this to say "I'm a Mac" and you should not be a "PC."

Fact is all Macs run Windows out of the box. So if you own an use a Mac you are a PC, also. One reason I have no idea what Microsoft is talking about in the latest bring ads.

I came across this poor guys comment on Amazon today and it reminded me of al the support and customer service nightmares I have had over the years. Read after the jump.

From Amazon site.
T. Kulmacz says:
Buying Dell is bad for your career and professional reputation

I made the mistake of having my company buy a Dell XPS 2010 machine in 2007 when it cost $4,000. The machine was to be used for on-site video editing at various events so it needed to be fast with a raid drive to handle high definition video editing. Also needed to look sharp with a nice screen so clients can review the footage at the events. Lasted just about a year and then breaks. For the past 4 months, I have been pursuing repairs with Dell and it is still not fixed. Support is horrible. Beyond horrible actually - more criminally fraudulent. Dell sells poorly constructed hardware and then gives an award winning run around when you attempt to get support.

I so regret going with Dell. No one trusts my equipment recommendations since I suggested trying Dell so I'm now pretty much excluded from the hardware decision making process (other than the occasional joke about having Tom call his Dell contact to obtain equipment for a project. And then everyone laughs and laughs . . .)

This whole Dell fiasco has just been hurtful and embarrassing for me.

1/30/08 - Machine breaks. Call Dell.

1/31/08 - Dell technician (Steve) replaces motherboard but it does not fix computer. Technician requests a box be sent for depot repair.

2/6/08 - call Dell to see where the box is at. Box was not sent so Dell attempts to send it again.

2/12/08 - call Dell to see where box is at. Box still not sent so Dell sends Steve back.

2/14/08 - Steve replaces motherboard a second time (and graphic card?). Machine runs just long enough for him to leave the building and then dies.

2/19/08 - call Dell to report issue. Dell claims it is sending a box. I don't believe them. Manager (SSR) Phillip claims he has authorized the box shipment.

2/22/08 - call Dell to see where box is at. Technician Jason is condescending in saying I did not give them enough time for the box to arrive.

2/27/08 - call Dell to see where box is at. Box still not sent. Technician Jeremy has his manager, Ahmed, speak with me who assures me the box will be there on Monday (3/3). I tell Ahmed I don't believe him and even should a box arrives, I bet once I send the computer it will get lost in whatever Dell internal process is glitching the box shipment.

3/7/08 - receive box from Dell. Ben Jimenez emails offering to help with replacement.

3/11/08 - email Ben I would be interested in pursuing a replacement.

3/14/08 - email Ben asking for instructions on returning machine in box. Ben never returns my call or email.

3/19/08 - return machine, power supply and mouse in box sent by Dell.

3/25/08 - receive back a machine but no power supply or mouse. Machine now boots up but CD Rom does not work. Leave message and email for Ben requesting refund. Ben never returns my call or email.

3/28/08 - Leave message and email for Ben requesting help with the missing adapter, mouse and broken CD rom. Ben never returns my call or email.

4/2/08 - Margarette leaves message offering to help. Call Margarette back but she never returns my call.

4/4/08 - spoke with Francis at XPS line. Spent close to 2 hours trying to diagnose the broken DVD drive. Francis is dispatching a technician with parts.

4/4/08 - call the 800-624-9897 number Francis gave me to discuss the incredibly bad customer service. Francis is having fun with me as this is just the main Dell number. Spoke with an Indian women who basically directed me to call technical support and then proceeded to give me the wrong phone number.

4/7/08 - Technician sent by Dell (Steve) replaces DVD drive.

5/1/08 - DVD writer fails after only reading few disks - never got a chance to see if it would write a disk. Call Dell and spend severl hours on the phone speaking with 3 technicians and a supervisor who pass the issue back to Ben even though I tell them Ben doesn't return phone calls or email. Supervisor Daniel assures me Ben will get back to me in the next day or two.

It will be nice if Ben surprises me and calls but after 4 months I'm not optimistic.

It's been 4 months and still all I have is a $4,000 paper weight taking up a lot of room on my desk.

Very sad how many of the responses to this post essentially blame me. I feel the only thing I can be blamed for is buying from Dell, from which I have learned my lesson and will never do so again.

5/21/08 - Received a replacement machine from Dell!! Sent the old P.O.S. back and begain reinstalling my Adobe video editing programs.

5/27/08 - not that I had anything to do with it, but Dell is found guilty of fraud, false advertising and deceptive business practices in New York. IDG reports:

"The Albany County Supreme Court found that Dell deprived customers of technical support that they bought or were eligible for under warranty in several ways, including by requiring people to wait for very long times on the phone, repeatedly transferring their calls and frequently disconnecting their calls.

Dell also often failed to provide onsite repairs for customers who bought contracts for such support and often blamed software when hardware was actually the problem, the court found. The company also sometimes refused to offer support when a support contract ended, even though the user had first complained about a problem before the end of the contract. Subscribers to a "next-day" repair service sometimes waited as long as a year for support, the court found."

Boy do I know what they are talking about!

I read this and I had several flashbacks and then remembered why I liked Apple. The stores equipped with Genius Bars and their superior customer service.

Even when I have had problems with an Apple product (yes, they break also) I have never had this type of run around as Dell has given this poor guy or the what Microsoft has given Xbox 360 owners.

Reading the comments at Amazon related to this guys experience shows, as I already know, he is not alone!

Maybe this is why Dell's fortunes are in the toilet and Michael Dell should truly consider giving the money back to his stock holders!

Apple has the best customer service in the industry in my opinion. This is why I recommend AppleCare and Macs to people!

If you thought that Vista was just going through a slow period, think again. Seems Microsoft's CEO Steve Ballmer has all but given up on Windows Vista. That's right, he said at Gartner's Symposium/ITxpo conference in Orlando, that it's OK for companies to SKIP Vista and hopes they come to Windows 7. Maybe the "WOW" will begin then?

If this is not admission that Microsoft brass is rushing the next version, Windows 7 to market and giving up on Windows Vista I do not know what else you need. Seems to me that Microsoft better slow down and get it right this time, Vista was rushed (only took 5 years) and the result was not received too well by users. Who is to say Windows 7 won't be full of issues?

Ballmer reiterated Microsoft's pledge that Windows 7 will be compatible with Vista. Wow, Windows will be compatible with... Windows. Isn't that something! Was this in doubt also?

While telling companies that it is OK to pass on Vista, Ballmer is quick to point out that "the adoption rate of Vista is two times faster than XP at two years in."

He probably does not include how many users have bought Vista and then UPGRADED to Windows XP in his numbers.

I say just buy a Mac and be happy. The ONLY PC you will ever need. It can run Windows too, if you must.

It is clear to me that Microsoft simply does not get it as exampled by their newest "I'm a PC ad." My Mac has long been a PC. Why choose when running Windows on a Mac is so easy and convenient.

Walt Mossberg, WSJ tech guru weights in on the latest version of VMware Fusion. I could not agree more with his assessment as I run Parallels 3.0 and Fusion 2.0.

Macs really "have no walls" as Mac users have the ability to run and manage Windows and any Windows app easily without issues. Fact is running Windows on a Mac is actually safer.

Microsoft apparently feeling the pain in lost market share, especially to consumers as the Apple ads have proved their effective. Now they plan on counting by spending upwards of $300 million in marketing. The theme "Windows, Not Walls."starting with $10 million to Jerry Seinfeld who may say "No Mac for you." I say to Microsoft "good luck with that." Personally I don't get it Vista is JUST not funny!

If Microsoft is getting ready to talk about interoperability, they better get used to ducking the blows that will certainly come their way!

UPDATE: Microsoft's newer operating system, Vista, was not chosen. Seems Microsoft is designated as an official supplier to the 2008 Olympic Games.

Lenovo chairman, Yang Yuanqing, was quoted as saying that because of the complexity of the IT functions at the Games, it was decided to not use the the more recent operating system. "If it's not stable, it could have some problems," he said. Vista, not stable? Really!

Bill Gates and his wife were in attendance at the opening ceremony, so it is a good guess that he saw the BSOD displayed in all its glory!

“This isn’t a matter of dissing Microsoft, but Intel information technology staff just found no compelling case for adopting Vista.”

Intel, a longtime partner of Microsoft, has decided against upgrading the computers of its own 80,000 employees to Microsoft’s Vista operating system.

The decision, after a lengthy analysis by its internal technology staff of the costs and potential benefits of moving to Windows Vista, which has drawn fire from many customers as a buggy, bloated program that requires costly hardware upgrades to run smoothly.
Windows users will soon have no choice but to accept Vista on new PCs as June 30 is the cut off date when Microsoft will no longer make Windows XP available to large system builders. Like or not Vista will be the desktop OS sold.

Dell will only accept orders for PCs with Windows XP until June 26, which was extended by demand. After the cutoff date, Dell customers will still be able to obtain Windows XP only on certain gaming and business systems that will be Windows Vista PCs that have been "pre-downgraded" to XP through a loophole in Microsoft's licensing terms.

Despite he fact that PC makers have continuing to push Windows XP almost 18 months after Vista's debut reflects widespread disappointment with the newer Windows OS. Business and home computer users have complained about Vista's cost, resource requirements, lack of compatibility with older software, printers and other peripherals.

Microsoft recently said that it would only allow computer makers to continue to sell the Home version of Windows XP on low-cost "nettop" PCs for an extended period past the official June 30 expiration through June 2010, or about one year after Windows 7 is expected to generally become available. Best reason was due to Vista's demand for hardware and resources these lower end computers can not run it effectively.

To run Vista effectively with all its features, computers need at least a 1-GHz processor, 1 GB of memory, and a 40-GB hard drive at a bare minumum. Windows XP Professional requires only a 300-MHz processor, 128 MB of RAM, and a 1.5-Gbyte disk.

Microsoft saw the popular ultra-mobile PCs like the Asus EeePC which runs Windows XP or Linux and sells for less than $400. These machines are incapable of running Vista. So killing off Windows XP would give Linux a big boost, since quite a few of these are already sold running the free open source alternative.

So will Windows Vista become what Windows ME was? Nothing more than a interim OS. I doubt Microsoft thought so. But it sure looks this way. If Windows 7 is another failure for Microsoft, it may be the "straw that breaks Gigantor's back."

Microsoft spent big time to promote and push Vista, without much success in winning over large amounts of users. So killing off Vista's main competitor, Windows XP may help, even if users are not making the switch on their own. Ballmer and company is making the choice for you.

I think there is still a great choice, move to the Mac and run Vista or Windows XP if you must alongside the more advanced OS X Leopard.

The same old tired arguments still get perpetuated by some Windows zealots. Macs are too expensive, there is no software for Macs, there is no games for Macs, Macs have no market share, etc. Of course this is ALL not true! Don't believe me? OK, if you refuse to research it, don't! But if you want to continue to believe this nonsense, it will be to your own ignorance.

Macs are NOT more expensive if you make real comparisons. There is so much software development for OS X it is hard to keep up. See my Top Software List for a small sample. Few major software vendors are not on the Mac (cough... some.. Microsoft). Microsoft Office runs perfectly well on a Mac. There are plenty of games on the Mac with more being added everyday. Mac's market share is growing at more than three times the rate of Windows. Apple already has about 21 percent of the "consumer" market, somewhere between 6 to 9 percent conservatively of the overall market, and a new report says Apple owns 66 percent of the higher-end, over $1000 computer market. These are people that are NOT buying cheap under powered computers.

I am not writing this to bring up the Mac vs. Windows tired argument. Why choose at all? All modern Macs can run Windows extremely well. In fact, Leopard the version of OS X that ships on all new Macs includes Boot Camp, as part of the operating system that allows you to run Windows on your Mac hardware. All you need is a copy of Windows, that you may already own.

Once you use Boot Camp to install Windows on your Mac hardware, a simple re-boot and you can run Windows. We all can agree that Windows users are used to rebooting, can't we? Just joking, really.

If you are tired of re-booting, don't fret. Purchase and install either VMware Fusion or Parallels Desktop for Mac [both $59.99 from Amazon]. This will allow you to run both OS X and Windows at the same time without re-booting.

Apple of course OWNS digital music. The iTunes Store is the number one retailer for ALL music in the US. The iPod owns over 70 percent of all MP3 players and the iPhone is coming on strong.

These tired arguments usually come from someone that has never been near a Mac in years, if ever. Some even have an iPod on their belt and live in iTunes. I run OS X, Windows XP, Windows Vista, and several Linux distros on a regular basis. Daily, in fact. Maybe it is about time you try out what many computer users seem to be moving to. There is a reason all those Apple Stores are packed with people in what some are calling a recession.

Again why choose? Have the best of both worlds and own some of the cool Apple hardware at the same time. Maybe its time. Have access to ALL the software.

There is an old saying "Lies, Damn Lies, and then there are statistics." Microsoft however goes waaaay past this in the latest reported numbers and their own predictions.

I think they must be handing out some of Albert Hofmann's meds in Redmond these days. Fuzzy math and crazy predictions rule the day at Microsoft. In the space of about a week the drum beating coming from Microsoft is a bit ridiculous.

Here's what I am talking about:

Microsoft's Xbox 360 mis-leading numbers to the gaming press released today.

Bill Gates speaking in Tokyo last week claiming the "very rapid sales rate" of Vista claiming it is doing fine. Many say that Vista is the worse blunder in technology ever.

Ballmers' statements of how Microsoft does not need Yahoo to catch Google in search while the latest numbers come out showing Google increasing its lead in US and in Europe.

Zune sales numbers are touted as selling over 2 million units.

Windows Mobile platforms expected to account for 40% of global smartphone market by fiscal 2012, according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices.

Xbox 360
Microsoft tells the gaming press that Xbox 360 has become the first console in the current generation to sell 10 million units in the US. Microsoft also points out its 19 million units sold worldwide. Seems Microsoft thinks there is much to be proud of.

Xbox 360 was released on November 22, 2005. The PlayStation 3 was launched on November 17, 2006. The Nintendo Wii was released on November 19, 2006.

Even with the Xbox 360 having a full year of sales over the competition the numbers are not that impressive, really. Nintendo's Wii is has sold 8.8 million units in the US as of the end of March, and will certainly reach that same 10 million unit milestone, a year sooner! Nintendo Wii has sold 24.45 million units worldwide already passing Xbox 360 sales. Nice that Microsoft saw it fit to leave out the market leader in its calculations. We call that "fuzzy math" here.

Vista
I could write volumes on the failings of Vista. I will save you from that here. But I will point out while Bill Gates was touting the "rapid sales" numbers, Steve Ballmer was telling the press that they were considering extending Windows XP sales and three leading PC makers Dell, HP and Lenovo said they would STILL load Windows XP even if Microsoft decides not to sell it anymore.

How many people bought Vista or got pre-installed on a new PC and rolled it back to Windows XP to get a usable computer? A lot!

The terrible failure of Windows Vista sure helped Apple sell a lot more Macs!

Microsoft and Search
Microsoft with its OWN technology, engineers and lots and lots of money spent has not been able to make a dent in Google search numbers, even though Microsoft controls over 90 percent of the desktop. Their plan was to buy Yahoo the number 2 search company. Some claim that the first order of business was to "convert" Yahoo to Microsoft's OWN technologies.

Now that they failed to buy out Yahoo (although, it may not be over yet) they claim they have other plans using some in house talent and technologies that will help them best Google. All while Google's recent search numbers show they have yet again gained and are almost up to 70 percent in the U.S. and beat 80 percent in Europe. Heavy use of hallucinogens?

Zune Sales
Zunes sales are dismal compared to Apple's iPod. Selling only 2 million units since they went on sale in November 2006. Apple sold 10.6 million iPods last quarter alone.

Part of the problem is the Zune has been slow to innovate and add features. Only recently adding video content and some podcast features. Still no audiobooks or movie rentals. The customer experience has not been that great.

Right now it appears that the Zune is still trying to catch up to the "classic" iPods which Apple is moving like a bullet to replace with much more feature rich and powerful devices like the iPod touch and the iPhone. looks like Microsoft is lost in a fog and digging in the wrong place. Tying the Zune to the Xbox 360 has not faired that well with consumers.

All the Zune really accomplished was to take sales away from Microsoft's former "PlaysForSure" partners without even touching Apple and the iPod.

Microsoft is one of the largest sellers of DRM technology and has continually screwed it up badly. Microsoft purposely killed off Windows Media Player for the Mac in an attempt to lock out Macs and iPods from Microsoft's DRM as if they were the market leader. Making their own DRM not compatible with the iPod has proved to be a bad move.

This has only helped Apple, the iPod and the iTunes Store. Apple does not have a proprietary music format or license DRM and has benefited from the use of DRM in the music industry at the expense of Microsoft.

Windows Mobile Market Share
"Microsoft expects sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market in fiscal 2012 (July 2011-June 2012)", according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices.

This is the latest delusion from Microsoft. Sure if you don't count Apple's iPhone or RIM's Blackberry as "smartphones." Even then, only maybe. More "fuzzy math?"

Ballmer Laughing at the iPhone where he lies about the pricing.
But he is NOT laughing now.

I will remind you it was Steve Ballmer that made fun of the iPhone when it launched only to see Microsoft's Windows Mobile phones get trounced and surpassed in sales in the first six months of the iPhone's availability.

"Microsoft currently focuses its efforts on promoting the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system (OS) and the company has no plans to launch Windows Mobile 7 until 2009", Wu also stated.

It will take Microsoft that long to "copy" the functionality and try to mimic the ease of use of the "current" iPhone till then. Reason? Microsoft has no modular operating system like Apple has with OS X that allows them to easily port it over to handheld devices like a phone, Internet tablet, or Apple TV like device. They claim to be working on one. Each version of Windows gets bigger, slower, more processor and battery hungry. That includes Windows Mobile. How is it possible the "OS" company with the largest share is so far behind? Maybe chasing Google and Sony is not such a great idea.

The handheld computing device is the future as more people move to wireless Internet and away from their desk. This is why Apple and Google are chasing the mobile phone.

The iPhone will continue to hurt Windows Mobile phone sales with the launch of new iPhone models, global rollout, Apple's SDK (software developers kit) allowing for third party applications, and the App Store that will make installing these apps as easy as a click or a touch of a finger.

It is estimated that about 20 percent or more handsets will adopt the Linux OS by 2013 (Market Research Firm ABI Research). Google's Android is based on Linux and Nokia sells some popular Linux based handheld devices.

Microsoft better make more use of their own products like an Excel spreadsheet when making these predictions. They are sounding more like the government lately than a leading tech company.

What are you doing this weekend? How about watching your PC continually reboot? That's what some aggravated Windows XP users have been doing Friday after installing the XP SP3 as reported by PC Magazine. OK, Microsoft is this a feature or a bug?

"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se," Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft who now runs a Windows-related blog, wrote. "The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."

So if understand Mr. Johansson correctly, it is not Windows XP SP3, it is the way your computer is configured, even if it worked perfectly well under Windows XP before the update! How nice.

If you haven't yet upgraded, you might want to wait. Unless you like this sort of fun.

Microsoft was scheduled to release the XP SP3 download on April 29, but a "compatibility issue" delayed it until May 7. Mention of the reboot problem first popped up on the Microsoft forums on April 23, prompting some to speculate that the poster's problem was due to an outdated version of SP3, but users who installed the final version soon reported the same issue.

"Microsoft is aware of these issues and we are investigating them further," according to a spokeswoman. "We will keep customers informed with our progress. Any customer who experiences a problem with Windows XP SP3 installation should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services." Seems at least some users on the Microsoft's own forums were aware of this issue as early as April 23, before the general release!

Meanwhile also consider that Microsoft reported this week that users who install XP SP3 will NOT be able to downgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to IE6. If websites you need to use do not work in IE7, like some on the corporate Intranet, you might want to not update.

Well at least Windows XP SP3 is NOT Vista! Anyway, here is a fix for your Windows problems.

According a story at the Washington Post's Security Blog, Hundreds of thousands of Web sites - including several at the United Nations and in the U.K. government -- have been hacked recently and seeded with code that tries to exploit security flaws in Microsoft Windows to install malicious software on visitors' machines.

The attackers appear to be breaking into the sites with the help of a security vulnerability in Microsoft's Internet Information Services (IIS) Web servers. In an alert issued last week, Microsoft said it was investigating reports of an unpatched flaw in IIS servers, but at the time it noted that it wasn't aware of anyone trying to exploit that particular weakness. Read the rest at the Washington Post's Blog.

Well in another instance Apple is proving it is listening to users. In March, some Windows users were upset that it appeared that Apple was using the Apple Software Update program that installs with iTunes to promote the installation of Safari. Apple has now changed the installer (version 2.1) that more clearly displays the difference between updates and new software.

New Apple Software Update in Windows

According to Computerworld, Apple spokesperson Anuj Nayer for Mac Hardware & Professional Applications said, "In this latest release we have made it easier for customers to identify between software updates and new applications."

The Mozilla Group noticed the change, but is still not happy apparently. Asa Dotzler, Mozilla's Director of Community Development wrote on his blog: "This is a good first step. Now Apple needs to stop checking the box for "New Software" items by default. With that change, I think I'd be pretty happy to let the Apple Software Update service back on my Windows machine."

Guess you can't please everyone! Anyhow, Apple has responded, unlike the Redmond based company that forced IE 7 on me without regard or notice using the Automatic Updater in Windows. Yes, I do understand that IE 7 is an update to IE 6, but it broke lots of my company internal websites with no easy way to revert back. But since it is Microsoft I guess we are used to them "controlling" users computing!

Anyway, seems Apple has responded to complaints in a matter of weeks, not months. Good job.

When it comes to Windows Vista, the amount of complaints from users, even die-hard Windows users are huge. In fact some have even left the platform for something better.

Vista tested customers with its steep hardware requirements, poor performance, misleading Vista-capable stickers, lack of driver support, problems with graphic card support, its ridiculous amount of different versions, and with its high price. One particular thing that drives users crazy however, is the User Account Control (UAC) that is included in Windows Vista.

The UAC nags users for even the simplest operations such as going to device manager, emptying the recycle bin, or installing/uninstalling an application. Apple even made a commercial poking fun of this ridiculous feature. Or was this a bug? Well according to Microsoft it is a feature. One that was born to annoy users! Yes you read that right. So says the guy who designed it anyway, David Cross.

Mr. Cross, the Microsoft product manager responsible for bringing the UAC to Windows Vista, gave the "real reason" for UAC at the RSA 2008 conference in San Francisco yesterday. "The reason we put UAC into the platform was to annoy users. I'm serious," remarked Cross proudly.

Let's give Microsoft and Mr. Cross a big applause, they have succeeded in a big way, annoying many Vista users. Now that is progress. Wouldn't you say?

Cross claimed Microsoft added the UAC to stop users from wreaking havoc with their systems and to stop software makers from making applications that delved too far into the Windows subsystem. Like emptying the trash? Uninstalling some useless crapware? What constitutes "havoc?" I though just installing Vista was a lot of "havoc" myself.

"We needed to change the ecosystem, and we needed a heavy hammer to do it," Cross added. Sledge, I would say. Cross went on to say that although UAC may be seen as an annoyance to some, but its lasting implications are far more beneficial to Vista users. REALLY? Sure he is right... many have bought Macs!

"Most users, on a daily basis, actually have zero UAC prompts," he added. Probably because like many Vista users, they have disabled the annoying thing. Not so says Microsoft. According to Cross, citing "internal" research, "88% of Vista users have UAC enabled and 66% of Windows sessions do not encounter UAC prompts." My own experience with Windows Vista seems to differ with Mr. Cross' findings.

Even by Mr. Cross' numbers one-third of the 88% of users that have not figured out how to turn the UAC off are still getting annoyed on a "daily" basis. The other 12% were annoyed enough to figure out how to get some relief. What about the other 44% of the "sessions." The way I figure that is over one third of all Windows Vista users being annoyed! Maybe Microsoft can shoot for 100% next time? I think they can do it, really. Maybe Mr. Cross should consider a career change... like into politics.

There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies, and statistics.
Mark Twain from Chapters from My Autobiography

This gives you the idea that these guys have no clue what a great user experience is. Hey, I guess if this was their goal, they have been highly successful. So successful in fact huge numbers of people forced to use Windows went back to XP!

Apparently it can. The recent consensus showing up on Microsoft's own blog and many other Windows based websites seem to be that with SP1 Windows Vista is even worse.

Since Windows Vista was released way back on January 30, 2007 (November 30, 2007 was the business customer's release), many Windows customers have been frustrated with many even going back to Windows XP (some Windows champs have even gone to Mac OS X). Well some 14 plus months later Microsoft has released SP1 for Windows Vista that arrived late. So far many Windows users are still going to feel the pain, as this release may not fix the problems they are having.

According to ComputerWorld, Microsoft rolled out Windows Vista Service Pack 1 to Windows Update, giving the majority of users their first look at the big update. Some didn't like what they saw. At all! They offer an FAQ on how to get rid of Vista's SP1.

It does not get prettier on other sites reporting Vista SP1 woes: Seeking Alpha - Microsoft Succeeds in Making Vista Even Worse, WashingtonPost - Vista SP1: Threat or Menace?, Mossberg: Vista SP1 Little Changed For Mainstream Users and Microsoft Vista Blog.

There is even talk of Microsoft again extending Windows XP support. I do have a suggestion. Only seven years old and already VERY grown up. Or stick with Windows XP that is older than "dirt" in computer terms.

TiVo has introduced a "plus" version TiVo Desktop for Windows software that helps turn its DVR STB into a networked media hubs. This new version stresses the ability to pull podcasts and can either recognize them directly from iTunes on a networked PC or else pulls them directly through RSS subscriptions on the Series 3, including 720p HD podcasts. Customers can also use the Season Pass feature normally used for recorded TV shows to monitor web video sources and add new videos from folders on a local PC without adding them to the list by hand.

The software requires a Windows PC and can still convert recorded TV shows to formats playable by iPods and the PSP. A Mac version of TiVo Desktop that matches these new features is still in development in tandem with Roxio, TiVo says. The DVRs themselves are also still set to receive YouTube support later this year. TiVo Desktop is priced at $24.95 for new users but is a free upgrade to anyone running a previous version. The standard TiVo Desktop for Windows software is a free download with less features.

Running Windows on your Mac is pretty easy these days as Apple provides Boot Camp that is built right into Leopard. Some Mac users may have found out that once they are running Windows they are subject to all sorts of malware, spyware, adware, etc. Even with running Anti-virus and other protection, Windows being Windows they might find themselves with a broken or crippled Windows installation, yes even on the Mac. Sometimes I am amazed when users think that running Windows on a Mac is somehow different. Anyway backup is essential.

Unfortunately backing up a Boot Camp partition is not as easy as you might expect as Mac cloning software like SuperDuper and Carbon Copy Cloner do not work with Windows volumes. To run Windows without a complete backup is not an option as far as I am concerned. So here is where Winclone (free) comes to the rescue.

Winclone allows for cloning your Boot Camp partition for Windows XP or Windows Vista with ease. If you need to set-up multiple machines with both Mac OS X and Boot Camp like in a lab, Winclone will make your job a a whole lot easier. Simply create an image as you would for a backup, and Winclone will create the Windows partition and restore the OS and data onto the new partition.

Winclone even includes the script needed to deploy images with Apple Remote Desktop so you can easily send a new Winclone image to a group of Intel Macs, imaging the entire lab in minutes.

Check the Winclone FAQ here. Download Winclone and give it a spin.

In what is considered an unprecedented move, Microsoft is cutting the retail prices on Windows Vista. For those in the U.S., Microsoft is cutting prices only on the higher-end versions of Vista, and only for the upgrade version used to move from an earlier copy of Vista. The suggested price for Vista Ultimate drops to $219 from $299, while Home Premium falls to $129, from $159.

Other developed markets will also see price cuts, while in emerging markets, Microsoft is eliminating the distinction between full and upgrade versions of Home Basic and Home Premium as it attempts to convince more users there to use genuine software.

The poor sales performance of the retail box version of Vista is surely the reason behind this move. So much for Microsoft telling us how successful Vista is. I guess the "wow" has still not really started over a year after launch!

Microsoft's internal emails have revealed that they knowingly lowered the requirements for Windows Vista to help Intel sell more low-cost chipsets.

As part of the investigation into the misleading "Vista Capable stickers" has revealed what is thought to be a crucial email in a class-action lawsuit filed against Microsoft, executive John Kalkman complains of bending the minimum specifications to allow certain budget mainboards to earn the criteria despite missing out on key features. Despite a lack of support for Vista's Aero Glass appearance and other features considered selling points for Windows Vista. The Intel 915 mainboard chipset was allowed to qualify for the Vista Capable logo solely to satisfy the close hardware partner, even though it effectively allowed companies to ship sub-par hardware and delay efforts for more capable equipment.

"In the end, we lowered the requirement to help Intel make their quarterly earnings so they could continue to sell motherboards with the 915 [chipset's] graphics embedded," Kalkman said in February 2007, just after Vista's release.

Microsoft responding to the questions raised by this and other e-mails, claims that the dialog was evidence of an "active discussion" about how to implement the Vista Capable program rather than evidence of deliberate intent. No explanation was given for why the discussion was still in progress months after the start of the Vista Capable program and weeks after the late-January debut of the software. No comment from Intel as of yet.

Chris Pirillo a longtime tech guy and Windows expert has announced he has switched to a Mac for his primary computing platform posting 50 Reasons to Switch from Microsoft Windows to Apple’s Mac OS X. Chris is not your average Windows user, he is in fact an advanced user that became famous for spending two years hosting Call for Help Show and the founder and maintainer of Lockergnome.

If you are a Windows user and often wonder why Mac users seem to "love" their computers and are so vocal about it. I suggest that you read Chris Pirillo's post. He makes many valid points like getting 32-bit Windows to recognize anything beyond 2GB of installed RAM is a seemingly futile effort and the lack of viruses and spyware. As a power user, Chris said that Mac OS X has far more to offer in terms of tweak-ability and modularity. He learned that by trying it, not by guessing that it wasn’t possible.

Chris feels that Microsoft does not really care about average users and develops mostly for corporate environments completely abandoning its power users. I agree. He asks why doesn’t Windows Media Player have podcast support yet? I likes that he never needs to defrag a Mac’s hard disk.?Setting up services such as Windows File Sharing, FTP, and even Web sharing can be done on OS X with just a few clicks. Erasing deleted files placed in your trash (also known as a Recycle Bin in Windows) can be securely erased in OS X. No need to mess with third-party software. Unlike Windows font management, you can activate fonts as you need them within Leopard. This translates to less wasted overhead by fonts that remain largely unused in memory.

He points out many issues that Mac users take for granted and many of the Windows users I know make excuses for. Chris says "Windows users need Apple’s software more than Mac users need Microsoft’s. That’s just a cold, hard fact."

Microsoft doesn’t have an iLife. Not even close. It has a set of multimedia applications, but they don’t seem to be cohesive in the slightest. Wanna set up a VNC server on your Mac? No problem, its already apart of the operating system! Moreover, the feature isn’t buried three levels deep.

After years of being a dyed-in-the-wool Windows Mobile advocate, Chris said he wanted to hate the iPhone. Now as an iPhone user he thinks Apple will gain consumer market share at blinding speed.

On the the age old non-sense story of Macs having less useful software myth. See what Chris thinks about the software that runs on the Mac. 32GB RAM in a Mac Pro vs 2GB RAM in the average 32 bit Windows.

Chris says most consumers are caught up in the idea that you NEED Windows for everything at home. You don’t. Many of my friends are considering making the switch as well. A few... have already purchased MacBooks - or are strongly considering doing so in the not-too-distant future.

CamTwist and Colloquy... interestingly enough, are two FREE apps that work amazingly better than most overpriced Windows shareware titles.?Java app performance is decent on OS X, and the same code looks infinitely better when it’s not running on Windows. In fact, most third-party apps are very well designed so as to integrate seamlessly with the entire OS. That’s beyond refreshing.??

To bust the bubble on the other myth - Cost of the Mac as it compares to a comparable Windows machine according to Chris:
A Mac costs about the same as a comparable Windows PC - for hardware and (for argument’s sake for those who don’t believe me) bundled software. And for those who still claim that Macs are still more expensive, they obviously have never seen or priced a gaming rig. Price / cost is relative. If you want a cheap machine, that’s your prerogative. The resell value on Macs has always been higher than that of an equivalent “Windows” machine.??

Chris Pirillo is not the only prominent Windows guy that now agree that switching to a Mac is a good idea. John C. Dvorak, columnist at PC Magazine, MarketWatch and a podcaster on the Podshow network. “I advise everybody to buy a Macintosh because Apple products are the easiest to use,” he said. “If you own a PC, you have to find a local nerd, a kid, maybe a relative. Every family has one unless they’ve just moved here from a foreign country. That’s the only solution.”
