Steve Jobs 1955-2011

If you would like to share your thoughts, memories, and condolences, please email rememberingsteve@apple.com

Steve Jobs co-founded Apple, served as CEO and Chairman and most importantly was the visionary leader that saved Apple from demise. It is a very sad day. Steve had an extraordinary life that touched so many people.

Steve also co-founded and was the CEO of Pixar Animation Studios, which created some of the most successful and beloved animated films of all time including Toy Story, A Bug’s Life, Monsters, Inc., Finding Nemo, The Incredibles, Cars and Ratatouille. Pixar merged with The Walt Disney Company in 2006 and Steve now serves on Disney's board of directors.

Steve grew up in the apricot orchards which later became known as Silicon Valley, and lived there with his family until the end. We will ALL miss you Steve!

VIDEO EDITOR returns home to find that his long-time companion has packed and left. His head swirls with multiple emotions, from anger to revenge.

That’s basically the scene that played out in the heads of the Pro crowd when Apple unveiled Final Cut Pro X.

...Apple isn’t actually abandoning the Pros. They’re simply redefining what the word Pro means. FCPX is only the most recent indicator....In the world of Apple, a Pro product used to mean “designed for high-end professionals with needs far beyond those of mortal men.” Now it simply means “the high-performance model.”

So basically, if you aspire to owning the faster/better/more advanced computer or software — congratulations, you’re a Pro.

Josh was the first person to show me Final Cut Pro (version 1) at DV Expo many years ago when few had ever heard of it. I spent over an hour with him and another colleague while Josh showed me what Final Cut Pro could do. I was immediately sold and knew I saw the future of non-linear digital editing and bought a new Mac and FCP as soon as I arrived back home from Long Beach, California! I later meet Randy Ubillos, creator of Premiere, KeyGrip (later renamed Final Cut Pro) and Aperture, a brilliant and a true innovator. I will forever give thanks to these guys as it shaped my vision and career.

Totally interesting read of Josh's opinion on Final Cut Pro X and the way Apple released it.

Jeffery Harrell:
I used Final Cut Pro X for a while. And I formed some opinions about it. Oh, and since it’s been asked: I cut this with Premiere 5.5 on my laptop. Never used Premiere before, needed a project to learn on.

The last time I checked the Mac App Store had 1269 ratings for Final Cut Pro X with one of the lowest ratings I have ever seen for an Apple software product. Over 70 percent of the comments on Twitter are negative and the gutsy lampooning that Conan O'Brien served up on the product that had just been released that is missing so many professional features I am wondering IF Apple is tone-deaf.
The new version of Apple's flagship professional editor Final Cut Pro X released on Tuesday of this week has had mixed reviews. Most professional editors have been left perplexed as to what Apple was thinking. Now Conan O'Brien lampoons Apple's new editing product.

Maybe becoming the punchline for late night TV will get Apple to re-think killing off Final Cut Studio which pros have depended on for years. The amount of missing features that professional editors is quite astounding. I have been using Final Cut Pro since version 1. In fact I used to teach it at a state college and my own training center years ago. I have spent many hours in front of Final Cut Pro, so I was quite excited to see a massive upgrade. BUT, upgrade it isn't!

I really didn’t want to make too big a deal out of Apple passing Microsoft as the most profitable company in the industry, but i can not resist. This trend has been clear for a long time. But maybe not so clear to everyone. Steve Ballmer, back on May 27, 2010 less than a year ago, after Apple’s market cap passed Microsoft’s:

Mr. Ballmer (using a rather awkward first person as Daring Fireball says) said he remains unfazed despite Apple assuming the position of the technology king. “I will make more profits and certainly there is no technology company in the planet which is as profitable as we are,” he said. “Stock markets will take care of the rest,” he added.

Well apparently, they have!

Now we can add this one to the list:

Roxio has released a new version of Toast for the Mac. Yes, some Macs no longer have optical drives, but Roxio has re-written Toast adding several new features to make it still worth upgrading. I have just downloaded Toast 11 as I just can not think of owning a Mac without Toast installed as I use it almost daily.

Toast 11 adds many requested features such as recording to multiple drives simultaneously, a much better software updater, and the ability to save custom video profiles. This is quite useful for converting video for a particular device. Toast 11 also brings features for directly uploading media to social networking sites such as YouTube, Vimeo, or Facebook and technology optimizations, dubbed VideoBoost, that help dramatically speed H.264 (high definition) video conversion or encoding.

Toast now includes - Internet audio recording; the ability to capture, save, and convert Web-based video content; disc spanning (automatically spreading a large amount of data or audio tracks across many discs); one-click backup of HD camcorder footage; dual-platform compatible disc creation; and TiVo-to-Go support.

Toast 11 now has built-in video tutorials which should help stop my phone from ringing with the usual how-to questions!

Along with Toast 11, Roxio has released the upgraded Toast 11 Pro version that adds Blu-ray Disc Plug-in and four other digital media applications. Details:

Adobe PhotoShop Elements 9 – the latest, full-featured version of the #1 selling consumer photo-editing software for the Mac. The application delivers powerful options that make it easy to create extraordinary photos, quickly share your memories in online albums and unique print creations, and automatically organize and help protect all your photos and video clips.

SmartSound Sonicfire Pro 5 – for creating an ideal soundtrack to accompany videos and slideshows. Use Sonicfire Pro’s unique automatic Mood Mapping feature or select from a library of included music tracks and adjust the mix and feel of the score to match your videos and slideshows.

BIAS SoundSoap SE – remove unwanted noise like wind, hisses, scratches, and pops from LPs, cassettes, or almost any audio, music, or video soundtrack. Also includes a plug-in for correcting audio in HD videos.

FotoMagico 3 – turn pictures and video into high-quality slideshows with a few simple clicks, and present them in high definition with the latest version of FotoMagico. Innovative text, transition, and alignment tools ensure astonishing results.

Blu-ray Disc Plug-In – author HD video content onto standard DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Take high-def (HD) video footage from AVCHD camcorders, TiVo and EyeTV and create Blu-ray Discs or even standard DVDs with HD content that can be played on Blu-ray set top boxes or PlayStation game consoles.

Toast 11 is now available in boxed package for $79.99 (after a $20 mail-in rebate), Roxio direct download for $79 and a Toast 10 upgrade is $59. Toast 11 Pro CD is $129.99 (after a $20 mail-in rebate).

Apple CEO Steve Jobs said on Monday that Apple’s board of directors has granted him a medical leave of absence. It is currently not known why Jobs requested the leave or for how long he will be gone. Jobs also took a six-month leave of absence in early 2009 when he received a liver transplant. Today, Jobs says that he will continue as CEO and will be involved in major strategic decisions while Apple COO Tim Cook will take over day to day operations during his leave.

Apple has release Mac OS X 10.6.6, which, among other things, adds the company’s much anticipated desktop application store. “With more than 1,000 apps, the Mac App Store is off to a great start,” said Apple’s CEO, Steve Jobs. “We think users are going to love this innovative new way to discover and buy their favorite apps.”

Looks to me as this simple idea will help many Mac users find apps they may never have found. Plus Apple should make a boatload of cash on this. Seems there will be the added benefit of lower app prices as the competition is on. The Mac App Store already has some bargains as compared to the website prices for some apps.

OK, Mac owners you updated your iPad and iPhones to the latest iOS 4.2 for all those great new features. Well one of the first things you might have discovered is that AirPrint was not really what you were hoping for. First off it only works with a handful of printers, probably not the ones you may own!

There are a few options, but I recommend this one - download ecamm's Printopia for Mac. This $10 app adds printing to most any printer you already own that your Mac can print to. It also adds a few other nifty things like sending print jobs as PDF's directly or to your Dropbox account saving paper.

Printopia works with Leopard (Mac OS X 10.5) and PowerPC Mac also. ecamm alows for a free demo version so you can try before you buy.

Apple and Verizon has finally made a deal. Not the one some would like to see however, but it is a start. On October 28, Verizon Wireless will be offering WiFi-only iPads in its brick-and-mortar stores bundled with Verizon's own MiFi 2200 Intelligent Mobile Hotspot device with pricing at $630 (16GB), $730 (32GB) and $830 (64GB) for the iPad and MiFi device. Verizon Wireless is offering a monthly access plan to iPad customers of up to 1GB of data for just $20 a month. Customers will also be able to buy a standalone iPad without the MiFi.

The upside for Apple is they will access to sell the iPad to Verizon Wireless customers. The upside for Verizon is they can finally claim they have a deal with Apple on something and the iPad is selling like hotcakes.

For consumers there are pros and cons for this deal. The upside is the MiFi bundle will allow you to connect other devices like your laptop to the MiFi device. The downside is that you would have to carry two devices and charge two devices as opposed to an iPad 3G where you would only need the iPad.

The cost of entry for the iPad and MiFi bundle as compared to a iPad 3G is about the same. The monthly data charge of $20 for 1GB of data is on par with today's pricing. Could this be the beginning of the end of the Apple-Verizon stand-off?

I just received the NEW Apple TV second generation hardware running iOS and spent a few hours putting through its paces. First let me reveal I have had a long love-hate relationship with the Apple TV. I was an early adopter of the first generation and actually own two of them. I have tried most all the hacks and spent many hours trying to enjoy their features. Right I said "trying" as I have been grossly disappointed in the Apple TV as a product. I have told anyone interested that I thought it was by far Apple's worst product and an embarrassment to a company that prides itself in creating great products.

So I had very low expectations for the NEW second generation hardware and only purchased due to its low $99 price. I was just hoping it would perform better than the two older ones I already had. I have always loved the concept of the Apple TV, but hated the execution and dire performance of what I considered terrible hardware.

Well the first thing that strikes you when you open the box of the Apple TV now is how tiny this thing is. Boy it's small. I was less than impressed with the specs when I read them, but figured what can you expect for $99, a Mac Pro? Connecting the new Apple TV to an HDTV is easier than ever, as it has fewer options and less setting to configure. Gone is the crazy boot up and stunning and loud splash screen video of old. The unit only has HDMI, Optical audio and Ethernet as far as user ports go. So you MUST have an HDTV with a free HDMI port to use this. Gone is the RGB connections. The video output is only 720P and you will not even find any settings in the menus to change anything related to video resolution.

Apple brought a major update to the Mac mini that is a lot more than a simple speed boost. This is a total re-design that features a new unibody aluminum enclosure with a removable panel on the bottom with easy access for upgrading RAM. This is the first Mac Apple has ever offered with a built-in HDMI port for video and multi-channel audio out which should make anyone wanting a Mac in their living room smile.

The new Mac mini comes in two flavors:

2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, Superdrive, 320 GB hard drive with Snow Leopard at $699

or

2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, Dual 500 GB hard drive (omitting the optical drive)
with Snow Leopard Server at $999

Both models have updated NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics, the same integrated GPU present in the MacBook and MacBook Pro. The new Mac mini also has an SD card slot in the back.

The new Mac Mini is available now in the Apple Store.

AT&T has revamped their data plans that will take effect on June 7 for all new smartphone contracts. These new plans will finally bring iPhone tethering (iPhone OS 4.0 will be required) while slamming the door on unlimited data for a set price. These data plans also apply to iPad 3G owners.

AT&T has announced two new data plans priced at $15 for 200MB and $25 capped at 2GB per month. If you go over 2GB on the higher-end plan you will be charged an additional $10 for another 1GB of data use. Tethering the iPhone will cost you an additional $20 per month when iPhone 4.0 arrives, most likely at WWDC.

Current 'unlimited data' plans for existing iPhone and iPad customers will still be in effect. However, once your contract renewal comes up, you may have to say bye to unlimited data.

These new plans may be the start of ushering in the age of metered broadband where you will pay for what you use. Something I have no issue with. Some iPhone users may actually see a savings from this switch as more than 98% of iPhone users (according to AT&T) are below the 2GB data usage. If you use WiFi a lot at home and work and use apps that load map data onto the device instead of fetching it from the network, like TomTom or Navigon for GPS when traveling you probably fall into this category.

UPDATE via AT&T's Facebook page:
Customers on the current $30 smartphone 'unlimited' data plan can keep that plan when upgrading hardware (new iPhone or iPad) without switching to the $25 / 2GB DataPro plan if they choose. However, if you want the $20 tethering option it will require the DataPro plan.

Apple has now surpassed Microsoft in market cap making them the second largest company in the US and the most valuable tech company. I called this one over five years ago and the criticism I received was enormous. So today I get to say, I TOLD YOU SO.

Congrats, to all the hard working people in Cupertino! Apple did this the old fashioned way. They worked hard, innovated, listened to users and provided superior products and service.

This occasion is more psychological than anything, but clearly the momentum is with Apple.

Pretty funny it happens in the same week Ballmer and company hatchets two VPs and is reorganizing the entire consumer division.

Apple has posted Thoughts on Flash signed by Steve Jobs on their website. In this concise and informational explanation he takes Adobe and Flash technology to task. I consider this a must read for anyone interested in the latest tech controversy. I am sure there will be many to attack this claiming a bias against Adobe by Apple and Mr. Jobs, but I think he lays out his reasons quite well and factually.

In his conclusion, Jobs sees Flash as the obsolete floppy drive in regard for the web video. It's just no longer needed for viewing video on the Internet. HTML5, CSS and Javascript is based on open standards, is easy to incorporate on websites and lack all of the problems he points to in his essay. See the entire essay after the jump below.

Thoughts on Flash
Apple has a long relationship with Adobe. In fact, we met Adobe’s founders when they were in their proverbial garage. Apple was their first big customer, adopting their Postscript language for our new Laserwriter printer. Apple invested in Adobe and owned around 20% of the company for many years. The two companies worked closely together to pioneer desktop publishing and there were many good times. Since that golden era, the companies have grown apart. Apple went through its near death experience, and Adobe was drawn to the corporate market with their Acrobat products. Today the two companies still work together to serve their joint creative customers – Mac users buy around half of Adobe’s Creative Suite products – but beyond that there are few joint interests.

I wanted to jot down some of our thoughts on Adobe’s Flash products so that customers and critics may better understand why we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. Adobe has characterized our decision as being primarily business driven – they say we want to protect our App Store – but in reality it is based on technology issues. Adobe claims that we are a closed system, and that Flash is open, but in fact the opposite is true. Let me explain.

First, there’s “Open”.

Adobe’s Flash products are 100% proprietary. They are only available from Adobe, and Adobe has sole authority as to their future enhancement, pricing, etc. While Adobe’s Flash products are widely available, this does not mean they are open, since they are controlled entirely by Adobe and available only from Adobe. By almost any definition, Flash is a closed system.

Apple has many proprietary products too. Though the operating system for the iPhone, iPod and iPad is proprietary, we strongly believe that all standards pertaining to the web should be open. Rather than use Flash, Apple has adopted HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – all open standards. Apple’s mobile devices all ship with high performance, low power implementations of these open standards. HTML5, the new web standard that has been adopted by Apple, Google and many others, lets web developers create advanced graphics, typography, animations and transitions without relying on third party browser plug-ins (like Flash). HTML5 is completely open and controlled by a standards committee, of which Apple is a member.

Apple even creates open standards for the web. For example, Apple began with a small open source project and created WebKit, a complete open-source HTML5 rendering engine that is the heart of the Safari web browser used in all our products. WebKit has been widely adopted. Google uses it for Android’s browser, Palm uses it, Nokia uses it, and RIM (Blackberry) has announced they will use it too. Almost every smartphone web browser other than Microsoft’s uses WebKit. By making its WebKit technology open, Apple has set the standard for mobile web browsers.

Second, there’s the “full web”.

Adobe has repeatedly said that Apple mobile devices cannot access “the full web” because 75% of video on the web is in Flash. What they don’t say is that almost all this video is also available in a more modern format, H.264, and viewable on iPhones, iPods and iPads. YouTube, with an estimated 40% of the web’s video, shines in an app bundled on all Apple mobile devices, with the iPad offering perhaps the best YouTube discovery and viewing experience ever. Add to this video from Vimeo, Netflix, Facebook, ABC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, Fox News, ESPN, NPR, Time, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Sports Illustrated, People, National Geographic, and many, many others. iPhone, iPod and iPad users aren’t missing much video.

Another Adobe claim is that Apple devices cannot play Flash games. This is true. Fortunately, there are over 50,000 games and entertainment titles on the App Store, and many of them are free. There are more games and entertainment titles available for iPhone, iPod and iPad than for any other platform in the world.

Third, there’s reliability, security and performance.

Symantec recently highlighted Flash for having one of the worst security records in 2009. We also know first hand that Flash is the number one reason Macs crash. We have been working with Adobe to fix these problems, but they have persisted for several years now. We don’t want to reduce the reliability and security of our iPhones, iPods and iPads by adding Flash.

In addition, Flash has not performed well on mobile devices. We have routinely asked Adobe to show us Flash performing well on a mobile device, any mobile device, for a few years now. We have never seen it. Adobe publicly said that Flash would ship on a smartphone in early 2009, then the second half of 2009, then the first half of 2010, and now they say the second half of 2010. We think it will eventually ship, but we’re glad we didn’t hold our breath. Who knows how it will perform?

Fourth, there’s battery life.

To achieve long battery life when playing video, mobile devices must decode the video in hardware; decoding it in software uses too much power. Many of the chips used in modern mobile devices contain a decoder called H.264 – an industry standard that is used in every Blu-ray DVD player and has been adopted by Apple, Google (YouTube), Vimeo, Netflix and many other companies.

Although Flash has recently added support for H.264, the video on almost all Flash websites currently requires an older generation decoder that is not implemented in mobile chips and must be run in software. The difference is striking: on an iPhone, for example, H.264 videos play for up to 10 hours, while videos decoded in software play for less than 5 hours before the battery is fully drained.

When websites re-encode their videos using H.264, they can offer them without using Flash at all. They play perfectly in browsers like Apple’s Safari and Google’s Chrome without any plugins whatsoever, and look great on iPhones, iPods and iPads.

Fifth, there’s Touch.

Flash was designed for PCs using mice, not for touch screens using fingers. For example, many Flash websites rely on “rollovers”, which pop up menus or other elements when the mouse arrow hovers over a specific spot. Apple’s revolutionary multi-touch interface doesn’t use a mouse, and there is no concept of a rollover. Most Flash websites will need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices. If developers need to rewrite their Flash websites, why not use modern technologies like HTML5, CSS and JavaScript?

Even if iPhones, iPods and iPads ran Flash, it would not solve the problem that most Flash websites need to be rewritten to support touch-based devices.

Sixth, the most important reason.

Besides the fact that Flash is closed and proprietary, has major technical drawbacks, and doesn’t support touch based devices, there is an even more important reason we do not allow Flash on iPhones, iPods and iPads. We have discussed the downsides of using Flash to play video and interactive content from websites, but Adobe also wants developers to adopt Flash to create apps that run on our mobile devices.

We know from painful experience that letting a third party layer of software come between the platform and the developer ultimately results in sub-standard apps and hinders the enhancement and progress of the platform. If developers grow dependent on third party development libraries and tools, they can only take advantage of platform enhancements if and when the third party chooses to adopt the new features. We cannot be at the mercy of a third party deciding if and when they will make our enhancements available to our developers.

This becomes even worse if the third party is supplying a cross platform development tool. The third party may not adopt enhancements from one platform unless they are available on all of their supported platforms. Hence developers only have access to the lowest common denominator set of features. Again, we cannot accept an outcome where developers are blocked from using our innovations and enhancements because they are not available on our competitor’s platforms.

Flash is a cross platform development tool. It is not Adobe’s goal to help developers write the best iPhone, iPod and iPad apps. It is their goal to help developers write cross platform apps. And Adobe has been painfully slow to adopt enhancements to Apple’s platforms. For example, although Mac OS X has been shipping for almost 10 years now, Adobe just adopted it fully (Cocoa) two weeks ago when they shipped CS5. Adobe was the last major third party developer to fully adopt Mac OS X.

Our motivation is simple – we want to provide the most advanced and innovative platform to our developers, and we want them to stand directly on the shoulders of this platform and create the best apps the world has ever seen. We want to continually enhance the platform so developers can create even more amazing, powerful, fun and useful applications. Everyone wins – we sell more devices because we have the best apps, developers reach a wider and wider audience and customer base, and users are continually delighted by the best and broadest selection of apps on any platform.

Conclusions.

Flash was created during the PC era – for PCs and mice. Flash is a successful business for Adobe, and we can understand why they want to push it beyond PCs. But the mobile era is about low power devices, touch interfaces and open web standards – all areas where Flash falls short.

The avalanche of media outlets offering their content for Apple’s mobile devices demonstrates that Flash is no longer necessary to watch video or consume any kind of web content. And the 200,000 apps on Apple’s App Store proves that Flash isn’t necessary for tens of thousands of developers to create graphically rich applications, including games.

New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5, will win on mobile devices (and PCs too). Perhaps Adobe should focus more on creating great HTML5 tools for the future, and less on criticizing Apple for leaving the past behind.
