Microsoft’s Fuzzy Math and Hallucinations?

There is an old saying "Lies, Damn Lies, and then there are statistics." Microsoft however goes waaaay past this in the latest reported numbers and their own predictions.

I think they must be handing out some of Albert Hofmann's meds in Redmond these days. Fuzzy math and crazy predictions rule the day at Microsoft. In the space of about a week the drum beating coming from Microsoft is a bit ridiculous.

Here's what I am talking about:

Microsoft's Xbox 360 mis-leading numbers to the gaming press released today.

Bill Gates speaking in Tokyo last week claiming the "very rapid sales rate" of Vista claiming it is doing fine. Many say that Vista is the worse blunder in technology ever.

Ballmers' statements of how Microsoft does not need Yahoo to catch Google in search while the latest numbers come out showing Google increasing its lead in US and in Europe.

Zune sales numbers are touted as selling over 2 million units.

Windows Mobile platforms expected to account for 40% of global smartphone market by fiscal 2012, according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices.

Xbox 360
Microsoft tells the gaming press that Xbox 360 has become the first console in the current generation to sell 10 million units in the US. Microsoft also points out its 19 million units sold worldwide. Seems Microsoft thinks there is much to be proud of.

Xbox 360 was released on November 22, 2005. The PlayStation 3 was launched on November 17, 2006. The Nintendo Wii was released on November 19, 2006.

Even with the Xbox 360 having a full year of sales over the competition the numbers are not that impressive, really. Nintendo's Wii is has sold 8.8 million units in the US as of the end of March, and will certainly reach that same 10 million unit milestone, a year sooner! Nintendo Wii has sold 24.45 million units worldwide already passing Xbox 360 sales. Nice that Microsoft saw it fit to leave out the market leader in its calculations. We call that "fuzzy math" here.

Vista
I could write volumes on the failings of Vista. I will save you from that here. But I will point out while Bill Gates was touting the "rapid sales" numbers, Steve Ballmer was telling the press that they were considering extending Windows XP sales and three leading PC makers Dell, HP and Lenovo said they would STILL load Windows XP even if Microsoft decides not to sell it anymore.

How many people bought Vista or got pre-installed on a new PC and rolled it back to Windows XP to get a usable computer? A lot!

The terrible failure of Windows Vista sure helped Apple sell a lot more Macs!

Microsoft and Search
Microsoft with its OWN technology, engineers and lots and lots of money spent has not been able to make a dent in Google search numbers, even though Microsoft controls over 90 percent of the desktop. Their plan was to buy Yahoo the number 2 search company. Some claim that the first order of business was to "convert" Yahoo to Microsoft's OWN technologies.

Now that they failed to buy out Yahoo (although, it may not be over yet) they claim they have other plans using some in house talent and technologies that will help them best Google. All while Google's recent search numbers show they have yet again gained and are almost up to 70 percent in the U.S. and beat 80 percent in Europe. Heavy use of hallucinogens?

Zune Sales
Zunes sales are dismal compared to Apple's iPod. Selling only 2 million units since they went on sale in November 2006. Apple sold 10.6 million iPods last quarter alone.

Part of the problem is the Zune has been slow to innovate and add features. Only recently adding video content and some podcast features. Still no audiobooks or movie rentals. The customer experience has not been that great.

Right now it appears that the Zune is still trying to catch up to the "classic" iPods which Apple is moving like a bullet to replace with much more feature rich and powerful devices like the iPod touch and the iPhone. looks like Microsoft is lost in a fog and digging in the wrong place. Tying the Zune to the Xbox 360 has not faired that well with consumers.

All the Zune really accomplished was to take sales away from Microsoft's former "PlaysForSure" partners without even touching Apple and the iPod.

Microsoft is one of the largest sellers of DRM technology and has continually screwed it up badly. Microsoft purposely killed off Windows Media Player for the Mac in an attempt to lock out Macs and iPods from Microsoft's DRM as if they were the market leader. Making their own DRM not compatible with the iPod has proved to be a bad move.

This has only helped Apple, the iPod and the iTunes Store. Apple does not have a proprietary music format or license DRM and has benefited from the use of DRM in the music industry at the expense of Microsoft.

Windows Mobile Market Share
"Microsoft expects sales of its Windows Mobile platform products will account for 40% of the global smartphone market in fiscal 2012 (July 2011-June 2012)", according to Eddie Wu, managing director of Microsoft ODM embedded devices.

This is the latest delusion from Microsoft. Sure if you don't count Apple's iPhone or RIM's Blackberry as "smartphones." Even then, only maybe. More "fuzzy math?"

Ballmer Laughing at the iPhone where he lies about the pricing.
But he is NOT laughing now.

I will remind you it was Steve Ballmer that made fun of the iPhone when it launched only to see Microsoft's Windows Mobile phones get trounced and surpassed in sales in the first six months of the iPhone's availability.

"Microsoft currently focuses its efforts on promoting the Windows Mobile 6.1 operating system (OS) and the company has no plans to launch Windows Mobile 7 until 2009", Wu also stated.

It will take Microsoft that long to "copy" the functionality and try to mimic the ease of use of the "current" iPhone till then. Reason? Microsoft has no modular operating system like Apple has with OS X that allows them to easily port it over to handheld devices like a phone, Internet tablet, or Apple TV like device. They claim to be working on one. Each version of Windows gets bigger, slower, more processor and battery hungry. That includes Windows Mobile. How is it possible the "OS" company with the largest share is so far behind? Maybe chasing Google and Sony is not such a great idea.

The handheld computing device is the future as more people move to wireless Internet and away from their desk. This is why Apple and Google are chasing the mobile phone.

The iPhone will continue to hurt Windows Mobile phone sales with the launch of new iPhone models, global rollout, Apple's SDK (software developers kit) allowing for third party applications, and the App Store that will make installing these apps as easy as a click or a touch of a finger.

It is estimated that about 20 percent or more handsets will adopt the Linux OS by 2013 (Market Research Firm ABI Research). Google's Android is based on Linux and Nokia sells some popular Linux based handheld devices.

Microsoft better make more use of their own products like an Excel spreadsheet when making these predictions. They are sounding more like the government lately than a leading tech company.

Developers still interested in the conference are being asked to wait for the immediate aftermath, at which Apple will upload the videos of events to iTunes. Some clips should become available with a free developer account; others, however, will require a paid membership.

WWDC runs June 9th to the 13th at the Moscone Center in San Francisco, and will for the first time have three separate development tracks: iPhone, Mac and IT.

ComputerWorld: AT&T is the Fastest 3G

If the next iPhone does get 3G support as we all expect, it may be just fine on AT&T in my area. At least according to ComputerWorld who took Verizon, Sprint and AT&T's 3G data services for a spin all around the tri-state area in NY, NJ and CT shows any indication.

Using data cards from each carrier and a Lenovo ThinkPad X300 at over 500 points in order to determine the king of 3G. Surprisingly, AT&T was the snappiest of the bunch in both average (755Kbps) and top data speeds (1.6Mbps).

I have always said cell networks are as good as were you are standing at the moment you are using them. Of course, there's more to consider than just speed.

Sprint gives you unlimited data freedom; Verizon and AT&T have 5GB caps. Also, EV-DO has a bit wider coverage area. But if you're mostly roaming around the NYC area, it looks like AT&T is the speedy choice.

This gives me the idea that an iPhone on this network may be killer, at least in my area.

Timeline 3D for the Mac

Bee Documents has released Timeline 3D, a new edition of its timeline creation software. This software can create amazing "timelines" for presentations, print and video productions. You can import easily from Address Book, iCal, iPhoto, iTunes, RSS, etc.

In addition to the features of the Standard Edition, the 3D Edition can create and display three-dimensional interactive timeline charts. It can also export timelines as full motion video to the iPhone, iPod, or Apple TV and as HD quality video for other video projects. Slideshow presentations can be created through integration with Keynote. Timeline 3D Edition is $65 for Mac OS X 10.5.
Steve Jobs to Keynote WWDC 2008

Apple has confirmed that CEO Steve Jobs, along with a "team of Apple executives," will deliver the keynote at this year's WWDC conference. The event is scheduled for 10AM PT on Monday June 9th, at Moscone Center, San Francisco. Apple notes that it will focus on Mac OS X Leopard, and "OS X iPhone," as it is now branding the iPhone's firmware.

Much is in anticipation on the iPhone front with supplies of the iPhone seeing shortages and most analysts thinking a 3G iPhone with GPS is looming.

Also fueling the suspense was a rumored internal memo from AT&T to its retail employees canceling all vacations and off time starting on Thursday June 12 to July 12.

What we do know is Apple had promised the latest iPhone software and the launch of the App Store in June.

Microsoft Releases SP1 for Office 2008

Microsoft has seen sales of Office 2008 soaring as Macs surge in sales. Microsoft is releasing Service Pack 1 for the Mac version of Office later today. You will be able to update later today as a download from Microsoft's Web site or via Microsoft Auto Update.

Many improvements across the entire suite are said to be included. Microsoft has said to have made many of these improvements from customer feedback and error/crash logs.

The loss of VBA Macros that many have been complaining about since the release of Office 2008 may be returning in the next release of Office according to Microsoft.

VBA Returns to Future Versions of Office for Mac
The Mac BU also announced it is bringing VBA-language support back to the next version of Office for Mac. Sharing information with customers as early as possible continues to be a priority for the Mac BU to allow customers to plan for their software needs.2 Although the Mac BU increased support in Office 2008 with alternate scripting tools such as Automator and AppleScript — and also worked with MacTech Magazine to create a reference guide, available at http://www.mactech.com/vba-transition-guide — the team recognizes that VBA-language support is important to a select group of customers who rely on sharing macros across platforms. The Mac BU is always working to meet customers’ needs and already is hard at work on the next version of Office for Mac.

Episodes of The Sopranos, Rome and Deadwood are selling for $2.99 while The Wire, Sex and the City and Flight of the Conchords have the iTunes "standard" pricing of $1.99.

While these prices may seem high, in the case of the Sopranos at least, they are still cheaper than what Amazon sells the season on DVD.

Windows XP SP3 New Feature: Constant Rebooting!

What are you doing this weekend? How about watching your PC continually reboot? That's what some aggravated Windows XP users have been doing Friday after installing the XP SP3 as reported by PC Magazine. OK, Microsoft is this a feature or a bug?

"At this point, I want to clarify that the endless rebooting is not at all related to SP3 per se," Jesper Johansson, a former program manager for security policy at Microsoft who now runs a Windows-related blog, wrote. "The problem is that with some configurations, SP3 causes the computer to crash during boot, and Windows XP, by default, is set up to automatically reboot when it crashes. That is why you end up in the endless rebooting scenario."

So if understand Mr. Johansson correctly, it is not Windows XP SP3, it is the way your computer is configured, even if it worked perfectly well under Windows XP before the update! How nice.

If you haven't yet upgraded, you might want to wait. Unless you like this sort of fun.

Microsoft was scheduled to release the XP SP3 download on April 29, but a "compatibility issue" delayed it until May 7. Mention of the reboot problem first popped up on the Microsoft forums on April 23, prompting some to speculate that the poster's problem was due to an outdated version of SP3, but users who installed the final version soon reported the same issue.

"Microsoft is aware of these issues and we are investigating them further," according to a spokeswoman. "We will keep customers informed with our progress. Any customer who experiences a problem with Windows XP SP3 installation should contact Microsoft Customer Support Services." Seems at least some users on the Microsoft's own forums were aware of this issue as early as April 23, before the general release!

Meanwhile also consider that Microsoft reported this week that users who install XP SP3 will NOT be able to downgrade from Internet Explorer 7 to IE6. If websites you need to use do not work in IE7, like some on the corporate Intranet, you might want to not update.

Well at least Windows XP SP3 is NOT Vista! Anyway, here is a fix for your Windows problems.

Zune Sales Unimpressive and Flat

With only 2 millions Zunes sold to date since they went on sale in November 2006 it looks like Microsoft's plan has "no bragging rights." The plan? The plan that was to take on the iPod and Apple head to head instead of the PlaysForSure partnership.

In fact it appears that the Zune is mostly taking sales from Creative a former PlaysForSure partner, not Apple or second-place SanDisk.

Zune sales look like a total flatline. Apple sold more iPods in on month last quarter than Microsoft sold Zune since it was introduced in 2006.

Microsoft sold its first million using solely the pioneering 30GB model, but since the past November has been selling two inexpensive flash-based models as well as two hard drive players, indicating slow growth with little effect on the market for its broader product range. If this is not a failure, I do not know what you would call it.

Microsoft has been pretty quiet with actually sales numbers and I find it ironic that with these dismal sales figures they were still way slow in introducing more features like TV shows, podcasts, smart playlists or even audiobooks into the Zune line.

These sales results leave Microsoft with just a tiny fraction of Apple's US market share and with comparatively slow development. Microsoft is watching the iPod and now the iPhone fly past their player with wi-fi music store, mobile Safari, widgets, email, etc. with no answer in sight. Microsoft barely has 4 percent of the market for MP3 players.

Creative, has dropped from four to two percent marketshare year-over-year. SanDisk is in second place with only 11 percent. Stats are from the NPD Group.

Apple in its latest quarter sold 10.6 million iPods, or more than five times Microsoft's cumulative sales to date and is now the number one reseller of music in the U.S. with their iTunes Store. On January 22, 2008, Apple reported they had sold over 140M iPods to date.

So I ask "Where is the social?"

Microsoft Says No Copyright Cop is Coming to the Zune

Yesterday, I posted a story from a NY Times blog, where it was reported that, as part of Microsoft's deal to get NBC TV shows, J. B. Perrette, the president of digital distribution for NBC Universal, said Microsoft had agreed to adding technology into the Zune that would scan a user's collection for unauthorized content. I copyright cop filtering system.

Today Microsoft denies there is any agreement to filter a users' content.

"Microsoft has no plans or commitments to implement content filtering features in the Zune family of devices as part of our content distribution deal with NBC," the software maker said in a statement.

Adam Sohn, a spokesman for Microsoft now says, "We've agreed to work with these guys on a number of issues, but we have no plans or commitment to put filtering technology as part of this arrangement with NBC."

So there you have it crystal clear, I think. Seems then NBC shows are on the Zune, that is not selling and has few users, at the same prices that they where on U.S. iTunes for. By the way iTunes in Europe still sells NBC shows. I am getting pretty curious who is running NBC these days.

Microsoft’s official Zune blog claims that the company has “no plans to add content blocking features in Zune,” and suggested that NBC was “expressing hopes.”

Microsoft May Build a Copyright Cop Into Every Zune

According to a NY Times blog post, NBC is pressing Microsoft to add an ant-pirate filter into the Zune. Now this should should gain them market share against the iPod and the iPhone, don't think?

I think making a better user experience could help. Which the Zune and its related software has suffered from. Adding filters and the problems that will surely come about from this will not make the user experience better and surely will not stop people who will pirate at all.

I can see it now you load your own recorded material that the Zune cop thinks is copyrighted and will not play back. Microsoft's way of saying "welcome to the social?"

What NBC should be worried about is getting their content in front of as many eyes as possible. Let us remember that that the TV shows they want to see is broadcast over the air for free. Surely, they have heard of VCRs, DVRs, TiVO, EyeTV, and the other dozen ways of recording content from the airwaves!

Microsoft is the company that thinks that MSN Music buyers should re-purchase all their music whenever Microsoft decides to change the DRM. So nothing would surprise me.

My take on this is copyright filters will probably not appear on the Zune. If they do Microsoft might want to rename the Zune to what they should have already called it, the Doom

NBC Bring Shows to Zune Where Few Will See Them

NBC pulled shows from iTunes (that were hardly missed) with the non-sense about pricing and pirating issues. Now they are launching the same shows on Microsoft's Zune at the same price where few will care.

The Zune is so far behind the iPod and iTunes it is not funny. Microsoft is finally bring video content in the form of TV shows at the same pricing as the iTunes Store. There are no movies, no rentals, still no audiobooks yet, and limited ability and choice of podcasts.

With the new features Microsoft is adding to the Zune they find themselves still playing catch up. At this point I see little chance of the Zune ever touching the iPod.

If NBC thinks this is a better strategy than having their content in iTunes, I really have to wonder about who is running the peacock network these days.

iTunes is said to be installed on something like 30 percent of all personal computers worldwide. As far as the Zune, I have yet to see one in the wild!

With all the so called social aspects that Microsoft is pushing with the Zune, the only way these will work is to have actual users, which there are still not too many.

The iPod touch and the iPhone will show you were Apple strategy is taking the iPod and iTunes. When Apple opens the App Store for iPod touch and iPhone users watch the upswing of pocket computing that will be the iPod.

Microsoft put on your sandals, Mount Everest is calling...

Remote Buddy Brings iTunes to iPhone/iPod Streaming

IOSpirit's Remote Buddy, € 19.99 version 1.10 has added AJAX Remote, which is a virtual remote control for iPhones or iPod touch users. The AJAX Remote integrated into Remote Buddy now supports the streaming of all files organized in iTunes, so that they can be played back directly on the iPhone or iPod touch.

With a little tweaking of ports and port forwarding I was easily able to get this working over the Internet instead of just my home network. Listening to your iTunes library at home on your Mac streamed to your iPhone or iPod touch can free you from the storage limitations on these devices.

Once you have remote access set up you can control your Mac remotely from your iPhone or iPod touch, view your Mac's desktop, monitor your home using your Mac's iSight camera and even snap off some pictures.

Remote Buddy controls about anything on your Mac, applications, keyboard, iSight, mouse, files, etc. With Remote Buddy you can use your iPhone or iPod touch to totally control your presentation.

AT&T launching VCAST Rival

AT&T is launching its new video service for mobile phones on Sunday. AT&T Mobile TV is almost identical to Verizon Wireless' VCAST offer and is operated by the same company, Qualcomm's MediaFLO.

AT&T must have written a slightly larger check as they will have two exclusive channels on the service. AT&T will offer this new service on two phones, and will charge $15 per month for 10 channels.

The eight channels shared with Verizon Wireless are CBS Mobile, Comedy Central, ESPN Mobile TV, Fox Mobile, MTV, NBC 2Go, NBC News 2Go and Nickelodeon. The two channels that will be exclusive to AT&T are PIX, which screens movies from Sony Pictures, and CNN Mobile Live.

The service will be available in 58 markets, including Atlanta, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York.

The AT&T handsets that will initially work with the service are the ones that are going on sale Sunday: the LG VU, a touch screen phone for $299.99, and the Samsung Access, a more traditional phone for $199.99. The prices apply with two-year contracts and are after $100 mail-in rebates. Other TV-capable phones will be available later.

Verizon Wireless has been quiet about how many people subscribe to VCAST, which costs the same as AT&T's service. Some analysts are skeptical that consumers are eager to pay $15 per month to watch TV on small screens.

Qualcomm was confident enough in MediaFLO, bid $554.6 million in a government spectrum auction in March for the right to use old UHF channel 56 in the Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles and San Francisco regions. That would allow it to broadcast several more MediaFLO channels in those areas.

Meanwhile, TV stations are planning to introduce their own broadcasts for mobile phones and other gadgets. The first such broadcasts, and the gadgets that will be able to tune to them, could be available next year. Unlike MediaFLO, these broadcasts may not require a subscription.

I would bet a lot the iPhone will eventually see this feature added sooner rather than later, if not officially from Apple and AT&T, from an independent developer using the SDK and App Store coming in June.

ZOHO Sheet Now Supports VBA Macros

Why may I ask can Zoho add support for VBA Macros on their FREE "online" spreadsheet while the expensive Office for Mac 2008 upgrade can't?

Zoho has announced a huge update to Zoho Sheet that includes the ability to import and create VBA macros in your spreadsheets. Granted they only support about 50% of the functionality at this point, but it is better than the 0% I got for paying Microsoft $240 for an upgrade.

Let's not forget that NeoOffice the free open source Office alternative also supports VBA Macros. Sounds like a good incentive NOT to buy an upgrade to Microsoft Office if you are on a Mac.

How To Prevent Losses From The Theft Of Your Mac

Laptops are among the most popular stolen items. They are expensive, useful, and usually contain loads of personal information. Mac portables are a great attraction to thieves. For the same reasons that you were attracted to that very cool Apple hardware, so are the dishonest people among us that are just waiting to walk away with your prized MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air.

In our household we were recently victims of a MacBook Pro theft. This event got me thinking of better ways to protect ourselves against a reoccurrence. The first thing you realize when your computer is stolen is that you just did not lose an expensive piece of hardware. You may have lost replaceable data, possibly your identity and personal information. Many of us carry around our lives on these machines. So losing one is quite a disruption that can have dangerous consequences.

The best way to protect yourself is to prepare in advance. I will layout several measures ALL laptop owners should consider starting with Data Backup, Data Protection, Prevention, and then if all else possible Recovery. These methods are not only for laptops and "road warriors" as a house theft could have you lose your desktop machine also.

iTunes Store Turns 5

Apple is celebrating the fifth anniversary of the iTunes Store with a look at back at "all of the great music, video, and exclusives" highlighting the songs and shows that defined each year. On its iTunes store, Apple is offering a brief history along with a collection of "best sellers."

Apple announced earlier this month that the iTunes Store surpassed Wal-Mart to become the number one music retailer in the US based on data from January and February of 2008 from NPD Music Watch.

iTunes accounts for approximately 70 percent of digital music sold worldwide. Wired notes that in the next five years, Apple's media service may well account for a staggering 28 percent of all music sold worldwide.

Adobe Drops GoLive

Adobe has announced that GoLive has been discontinued. The company has ceased development and sales of GoLive effective Monday, April 28, 2008.

GoLive started life as CyberStudio, an early What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) Web editor, the flagship product of German developers GoLive Systems. Adobe acquired GoLive Systems in 1999 and rechristened CyberStudio as Adobe GoLive. GoLive has gone through nine major revisions, culminating in 2007’s release of GoLive 9.

Adobe acquired rival Macromedia in late 2005, and has since integrated many of Macromedia’s products including Dreamweaver.

“Even after GoLive 9 came out people were drawn to Dreamweaver,” says Devin Fernandez, GoLive’s product manager, “especially around features and support for technology like AJAX and CSS Starter Points. Dreamweaver also supports dynamic content, while GoLive doesn’t.”

Adobe will continue to support GoLive users with online tutorials and migration assistance created by usage experts. The company has also collaborated with online training service Lynda.com to provide tutorials for GoLive users.

Adobe is also offering a $199 upgrade for registered GoLive users to switch to Dreamweaver.
