Many of these apps have free trials available. Some applications listed are commercial software packages. I have not listed the biggies like Adobe Photoshop, Dreamweaver or Microsoft Office as assume most users are familiar with these huge software packages.

Accompanist: OS X, free – input a sequence of chords, and Accompanist will generate piano accompaniment in a variety of musical styles.

Acquisition: Shareware $17.99, OS X only – my favorite peer to peer application with integrated BitTorrent support.
Address Book to CSV Exporter: OS X, free – exports your Address Book Contacts in CSV so you can import them into Gmail or other places.
Address-o-sync: Freeware, OS X only – Share or sync Address Books for multiple Macs over Bonjour.
AddressBookSync: OS X, free – download profile pictures and other Facebook data to Address Book cards.
Adium: Freeware, OS X only – Adium is a free instant messaging application for Mac OS X that can connect to AIM, MSN, Jabber, Yahoo, and more.
Adobe Media Player: Cross-platform, free – Adobe’s video player.
Afloat: OS X Leopard, free – system plug-in that adds many window management features to most Mac applications.s
Airfoil: Shareware $25, OS X and Windows – Airfoil lets you send any audio to remote speakers attached to all your AirPort Express in sync. AirPort Express – It’s not just for iTunes anymore.
AirPort Flow: OS 10.5, free utility for Leopard that monitor the transfer rates of your AirPort Extreme.
AirRadar: OS X, free – scan for open networks to view detailed network information, graph network signal strength, and automatically join the best open network in range.
Alarm Clock Pro: OS X, $19.95 – iTunes savvy alarm clock.
AllBookmarks: OS X, free – get to your bookmarks from the menu bar giving you quick access for most browsers.

AppCleaner: OS X, free – completely and properly uninstall unwanted apps by dropping an application onto the AppCleaner icon which searches for all related files so you can delete them.
AppDelete: OS X, donationware – delete the application you choose and any associated items (files and folders) that belong to that application.
AppFresh: OS X only, free – keep all applications, widgets, preference panes and application plugins installed on your Mac up to date.
AppleJack: OS X, free – command-line utility that makes a number of troubleshooting procedures available via single-user mode at startup.
AppMenuBoy: OS X Leopard, free – creates a hierarchical menu, in the dock, and when it is the frontmost app, in the menu bar, of your apps.
AppShelf: OS X, $6.90 – easily keep track of your purchased software and serial numbers.
AppTrap: OS X, free – drag an unwanted application to the trash and a dialog window asks if you want to delete associated files.
AppZapper: OS X only – $12.95 – delete an application and all the files that came with it in a drag drop zapp!
AquaEthereal: Freeware and open source, OS X only – AquaEthereal is an application launcher, written in Python, for the Unix-based Ethereal network monitoring program.
AquaPrompt: OS 10.5 or higher, $15 – easy to use tele-prompter.
Art Text: Shareware $40, OS X only – application to create high quality textual graphics, headings, logos, icons, web banners and buttons.
ArtRage: Freeware, OS X and Windows – painting package designed to provide a realistic and fun simulation of using paint on a canvas, along with pens, pencils, crayons, and other tools like Corel Painter.
Assignment Planner: OS X, $8 – keep track of homework assignments for a number of different courses includes features that allow you to display only those assignments that are yet to be completed, add information to all your assignments.
aTV Flash: Apple TV, $59,95 – USB flash drive that inserts into the AppleTV and will upgrade it to do all kinds of new things.

BetterZip: OS X, $19.95 – split files into certain sizes, open archives without having to expand them and extract only certain files plus encrypt your archives.
Bezipped: OS X, free – file compression and archive utility that creates smaller archives than Finder’s “Compress” functionality. Windows friendly format.
Bias Deck: OS X, $99 for LE & $399 for Deck 3.5 – advanced multi-track digital audio workstation for music, audio-for-picture, Internet audio, 5.1 surround mixing, and more.
Bias Peak: OS X, $129 for LE & $599 for Pro – digital audio workstation for the Mac.
Bin-it: OS X, $12.50 – floating desktop trash can, a feature missing on Macs.

Blender: Cross platform, open source and free – one of the best graphics/animation programs from the open source world.

Boinx iStopMotion: Shareware $40, OS X only – iStopMotion is the tool of choice for Stop Motion Animation (aka. Claymation) and Time Lapse Recording.
Bokeh: OS X, $17 – allows you to stop an application from using the processor, freeing it up for other applications to use.
Bonjour Browser: OS X, free – browse all the Bonjour services available on your local network.
Bonjour for Windows: Free for Windows 2000/2003, Windows XP or Windows Vista – enables automatic discovery of computers, devices, and services on IP networks.
Bookit: OS X, $12 – keep all your browsers’ bookmarks synchronized quick and easy.
Bookpedia: OS X, $18 – organize and keep track of your books.
Books: OS X, free – Cocoa application for OS X that helps you manage your personal book collection.
BravoTunes: OS X, free – puts iTunes in your menubar, providing scrolling track information for the current and upcoming songs, plus a system-wide menu.
Breakaway: OS X, free – Stop/start iTunes depending on the status of headphones connect or disconnect to avoid blaring speakers and losing your place.
BrowseBack: OS X, US $29.95 – view, search, save, and share web pages you have visited quick and easy.
Bucket Explorer: Cross-platform – USD$29.95 – user interface for Amazon’s Simple Storage Service, S3. Amazon allows you to store data in folder like “buckets” on S3.

Camino: Freeware and open source, OS X only – gecko engine like Firefox, but is more at home on a Mac.

Camouflage: OS X, free – hides all the icons and leaves nothing but the pure wallpaper. One click on the desktop opens the Finder Window.
CamTwist: OS X only, free and open source – lets you add special effects to your video chats.

Capo: OS X, $49 – musician’s best friend. It lets you slow down your favorite songs, so you can hear the notes and learn how they are played. Awesome UI.

DriveImage XML: Windows XP/Vista/Server 2003, free for private use – uses Microsoft’s Volume Shadow Services (VSS), allowing you to create safe “hot images” even from drives currently in use. Not pretty but clones your drive.
DRM Dumpster: OS X, $30 – legal way to convert DRM tracks from your iTunes music library to standard files. DRM Dumpster uses a CD-RW and iTunes itself to convert all of the DRM music files so can use with any music player.
DropCopy: OS X, free – quickly share files/folders between your OS X machines across your home network.
Duplicate Files Searcher: Cross-platform, free – finds and deletes duplicate files on your computer and removable media devices.
DVD Rip: Windows, free – rip DVDs for back-up.

Flock: Cross-platform, Flockfree web browser that makes it easy to share media and connect to other people online.
